I don't know if a sketch show as homogenized and network-tame as SNL will ever be especially great, but it's been drastically better in the seasons since they added Samberg/Wiig/Hader/Sudeikis and Seth Meyers as head writer than it was when it was the Will Ferrell-era cast after Will Ferrell left built around Jimmy and Horatio Sanz.

spf is right though, people have been saying the same thing about Saturday Night Live every year since I started watching it and presumably going back before that. Realistically, almost every single season has been either a little bit better or a little bit worse than the same exact median over the entire time.

Well, it was certainly a quick watch on the DVR!

When the Digital Short tanks, you know you're in trouble.

And what's with the weird ticking sound during the opening credits?

There were a few things that stuck out after hearing news/rumors/speculation before the season started:

-Don Pardo was still there. Wasn't he stepping down? Or is this his final season?

-Darrell Hammond was gone. I must have missed the official announcement that he wasn't coming back. It was still up in the air when the Casey Wilson/Michaela Watkins firings were announced.

-Also, wasn't it announced that Kristen Wiig was going to co-anchor Weekend Update?

I also thought the Digital Short sucked. I usually get pumped for those, but this one had me scratching my head. So did most of the episode actually...

I watched the episode on the DVR and I found myself fast forwarding quite a bit. The biggest offender was the stupid biker girl/dirtbike/whatever sketch, so I missed out on hearing the f-bomb dropped. They were just excrutiating, it was making me genuinely unhappy.

That's weird. I didn't even notice that because he's been on Weekend Update Thursday both weeks. Of course, Amy Poehler is still on Weekend Update Thursday, so the cast of the two aren't necessarily the same.

I still think it is a matter of opinion, but I guess another option is just not watching a show that you think is not funny and shouldn't be on the air. Or dare I say, not waste your time going on line to complain about a show you don't like, instead of maybe praising another one that you do.

The funniest part of the show was the "How To" Sex DVD.

Thanks, Internet message board poster!

The only thing worse than complaining is meta-complaining - and it's about as welcome here as it is on the Pro Wrestling side of the board.

Besides, everyone's clearly taken that advice when it comes to "Sit Down, Shut Up" becuase you don't see any threads about IT here, do you? I don't think it's unfair to expect better from SNL.

I'm still holding out hope that Hammond and SNL are still talking - maybe it makes it easier if he skips a show or two so they can get away with paying him 1/xth less to have him for the season. (Or maybe that money's going to the Don Pardo retirement fund!)

It's one thing to debate if the show is funny anymore, which I do, but it's another to just say it shouldn't be on the air because you don't like it or it's not as good as it used to be. That's why I said (twice) it is a matter of taste. There are plenty of popular shows that have been on for years that I have never understood the appeal of, but that doesn't mean I don't think it should be on the air. Because obviously some people still like it, as I do SNL, and that's fine.

I was embarrassed at how much I laughed at that sketch. Maybe I was just starved for hilarity at that point. Then again, I also like Jean K. Jean so maybe I just like Kenan Thompson more than I realize.

Jean K. Jean is automatic FFWD for me. I tried FFWDing through the first "How To" sketch, but he was so wacky that I had to go back and watch it (and enjoyed it).

Weirdly enough, I didn't even notice the f-bomb during the initial sketch (I wasn't paying full attention). I *did* notice the Meyers hug that Drew referred to, and thought it looked weird, but was lacking the context.
