September 11, 2009 - This afternoon at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Disney films president Dick Cook concluded a presentation on the company's future cinematic slate by bringing down the house...The curtains parted and the mast of a pirate ship emerged from the misty darkness. Silhouetted behind the sail, the outline of -- you guessed it -- Captain Jack Sparrow. The mast turned, revealing Johnny Depp, in full Sparrow regalia, drunkenly swaying as the screen above him faded and the Pirates of the Caribbean logo appeared, revealing, for the first time, the tirle of the upcoming fourth film in the series:
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides...
And beneath it, the words, "Summer 2011."
How...unnecessary. Wasn't three films enough? And that's coming from a guy that actually LIKED all three movies.
Well, three's always a good place to stop, but I have to admit when I saw the end of the third picture, the first thing I thought was that I would, in fact, pay money to see a fourth movie where Jack and Barbosa search for the Fountain of Youth. So I can't really fault them here.

From boxofficemojo.com's all time worldwide grosses list:
6 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End BV $961.0 $309.4 32.2% $651.6 67.8% 2007
When the last movie in the series comes in just under a billion worldwide, and the one before it cracked the billion mark, there's no way that a fourth wasn't getting made unless Depp just plain wouldn't do it.
