Good question; why can't it currently be found on any of the major (or local) mainstream news sites? But then again, while I may be mistaken, I don't recall any of the mainstream media carring the story earlier this week of Steve Austin walking off the set of RAW, even after the press release WWE posted on its website. For that matter, where was the mainstream media coverage when Scott Hall left/got fired from the show? Not a word of that was to be found in TV Guide. How do you explain that? I mean, I guarantee if Sarah Michelle Gellar walked off the set of "Buffy", or if Alyson Hannigan got sacked by that show's producers, FOX, CNN, MSNBC, et al would be falling all over themselves to cover the story; yet WWE programming and its stars live completely outside the media radar, despite having a higher number of viewers.

Sorry for the rant; it was born out of the frustration of me trying to do what I'm sure many of you have been trying to do as well: verify the authenticity of this story. Hopefully more information will come out soon because, if this story is true, then one of our favorite performers is a low-life scumbag; and if it's false, then a top entertainer's name has irrevocably been tarnished.

If it was run on the 10pm newscast then there is enough time fo rit to hit the Sunday papers. Something doesn't feel right about this. However, they did refer to Austin having mental problems on Confidential. If this is true then we have a case of life imitating art and Steve became his gimmick.

I'm just hoping that if this is true, and I'm still going to leave the proverbial grain of salt on the tips of my fingers as I type until this shows up on a news source that doesn't have wrestling in the URL, that Debra reconsiders and presses charges against him for this before this escalates beyond welts.

Of course, they really didn't need her to press to charges, as shown by the Warren Moon situation back in the mid 90's, unless laws have changed in Texas since then.

Meltzer showed up on another message board and explained the disappearing post..

"Here's the story. I got several different reports that the NBC affiliate in San Antonio ran the story. There were from enough different people including someone who has been a correspondent from that city for years. I was able to confirm that the story ran. As you can imagine, at 3 a.m. Central time, it is very difficult to get police confirmation on a story which, by the nature of the story, names would not be released. It's also difficult to get confirmation from a local news department at that time. The police suggested that I call in the morning. I figured at that point the best thing to do was take it down until making phone calls in the morning and actually attempt to sleep. The TV station reporting the story made it news because of the nature of who it was, but perhaps I wanted to bend over backwards just in case there was a problem regarding accuracy of some small aspect of the story.

I had the police report read to me in the morning and posted the new story, which is not the same story as was posted last night. I don't resent anyone speculating on these boards as to why, because I'd do the same thing under those strange circumstances. I do resent other so-called reporters attempting to make a story out of my posting something that was easily confirmed by anyone who saw that newscast, and asking why I pulled it, without so much as a phone call or e-mail and going on their wild goose speculations and creating a fake story. I also want to commend the several internet reporters who did e-mail and ask, both last night and this morning, and I explained the entire situation to them."

Here's what's most likely the case here:

KMOL airs at 10 p.m. Central time. I've worked at a newspaper... the deadline for the local Sunday papers is probably about 11 p.m. (a couple hours at least to run the presses and combine all the various sections of the paper, and then you have to distribute the papers 3-4 hours away for a 5 am delivery) or so at the latest, so the papers would have about 50 minutes to write a story/confirm/proofread it. There's no more than one or two papers in San Antonio with the monopolizing going on in the industry.

That's for the front and back pages, which are done last... Austin's incident probably isn't quite front page news so they weren't obviously concerned about it. They probably were piecing together the front page at this point.

They needed to make some calls, make sure what they were reporting, obviously there wasn't time to properly look into it and get all the details from the station before deadline.

The other TV stations won't have a newscast until tonight since the story aired on KMOL (KMOL scooped them)... the wire services won't pick it up until sometime today I think (someone has to write a story first).

As for Meltzer, he probably got a report from one of the people sending it in that it was the right eye, and from the station that it was the left, and he hasn't edited the post.

I'd say Meltz can be trusted on this one; c'mon guys, stop doubting the reality of facts simply because they come from wrestling sources. Sad as it may be, I think this is the truth.

I'm going to put it plain and simple: Steve Austin can go to hell. Period. I don't ever want to see the son of a bitch again. I was on his side, now I have no use for him. God damn, there's no excuse for this.

People doubt everything, especially something like this. I called my cousin who lives in San Antonio and he saw the report. He said it was pretty short and they said they would have more on the story as it develops. So I believe it. I am shocked, apalled and yes, Steve Austin will never be ok in my book. Beating your wife is about the lowest thing you can do in my book. He can stand up to Debra, but not Vince? If he is never on WWE TV again, that is fine by me.

And in a bizarre and disgusting new level of tastelessness, wrestlezone.com actually have a poll up on the issue, asking whether or not Debra lied about the assault and if she's after Austin's money. Bravo. *slow, sarcastic clap*

...does anyone else have a really, really bad feeling about all this?

Man gets drunk after watching his former boss and former friend bury him on national television, gets into a fight with his wife a few days after walking out on his job (right or wrong) and then vanishes?

I'm afraid this might have been the last we see of Austin, period.

Fuck.

So it's pretty much confirmed this isn't any sort of mistake or miscommunication, then.

1. Steve's problems apparently go well beyond a poor workplace environment. There's no excuse for this, but... fuck. A part of me wants to know when this started or why this started or what. He's always seemed like a relatively respectable guy by wrestling standards.

2. Steve's career is over. Even if Vince is jaded enough to take him back after this, he couldn't aford the publicity hit. And that's assuming Austin doesn't see prison time.

3. The timing on this is so bizarre. I don't know what to make of the fact that Debra waited until now to report this. Either Austin's gotten worse since the new company problems, or Vince is one lucky, lucky bastard. The real cynic in me wonders if someone hasn't been in Debra's ear the whole time suggesting she keep this quiet for the sake of business and Autsin's career. That's entirely baseless speculation, of course.

I fear a Kerry Von Erich situation... I keep going to the news sites with the most morbid of expectations... just because that happening would just be so... so... wrestling. Especially in 2002.

Vince cannot take Austin back if he wanted to. The backlash is going to be harsh because Austin is still a WWE employee. The mainstream media is going to be hard on the case. I can see ET showing male-femal violence clips from WWE and comparing that to real life. I wonder if they will tell Lawler to chill on insulting the ladies and actually treat the women's matches with respect. I can see women's groups now actually watching WWE programming and taking notes.

Well, it's fairly simple. First even after 20 years of mainstream attention wrestling fans are thought of as drunken hillbillies who are too stupid to know wrestling is fake. Second SMG is not only a "celebrity" but is fucking one too so that makes her twice as important. Third the WWE has like 70 wrestlers and while Austin is the #1 guy he is a much smaller all around piece of the pie at least to outsiders. But the biggest reason is that they don't know when the WWE is just trying to get free publicity. The WWE is not unwilling to plant fake news stories to get media attention.

I sent a friend of mine who's a fan this story (he's not into the internet side of wrestling) and his reaction:

Oh my.
What a redneck.

I didn't have much respect for the guy after he walked out. Now this. I think the worst part is that it wasn't the first time he's done it.

Well, if this was 2 years ago, this would have gotten some Mainstream press, but with the WWE not exactly where it was 2 years ago, it gets no press. Outside of The Rock, no one gets mainstream press anymore.

Maybe it's my cynical nature, but I need more confirmation before I start crying for Austin's blood. The timing's just way too suspicious, and I want a major source to pick this up. I'm reserving judgement until I get more information and confirmation

Wrestling downturn or no--this is a story everyone can have fun with. It's a story that can be spun to sy "See? Westling is a life-destroying endeavour that destroys the lives of those who perform and propagates the culture of violence in this country, etc. Now stay tuned for "World's Wildest Police Shootouts." It's fresh meat and tailor-made.

If it's true, then yeah--nail him to a tree for the birds to pick on him. Until then I'm on the "Innocent until proven guilty side." I'm not the world's biggest Austin fan, but let's be absolutely SURE.

I'm not riding the fence but dammit, I'm not gonna pillory the guy until we know for sure. Fuck a grain of salt, this is so serious you need to take a whole block.

No-one's gonna truly know whether or not he hit Debra, except him and Debra themselves. But the fact that he supposedly left when she called the police then refused to come back even when the police called him is mighty suspect.
