My father-in-law has a Gateway 7422 laptop, running XP Home. Recently, it stopped working. Nothing on powerup. No beeps. No cursor. Nothing. He doesn't have any rescue CDs, so I don't have those to try.

Any suggestions? Gateway tech support is no good, since the computer is out of warranty. All they did was confirm that, yes, it really doesn't start.

have him unplug anything he can. Make sure there's no CD in the CD player.

Take the battery out, maybe

remove the PCMCIA board if he has it

Have him power up and hit F2 repeadely and and see if he gets anything

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Still nothing. Other than the power light being lit, the lap top does nothing.

My next suggestion would be to start removing things - like memory, swap the hard drive, that sort of thing. I mean, the motherboard could be fried.

My fear/assumption is that it is the motherboard. Since I don't have a stockpile of parts to try to swap out here, I was kind of hoping for any other ideas.

I appreciate the help.

My laptop wouldn't boot one time, and it turned out I had to remove the battery, leave it unplugged, and push down the power button for 30 seconds. Then hook it back up to power and see if it boots. The reason for pushing power is to drain it of any residual energy that may be there causing problems.

It did indeed work, so that's worth trying. But that might be a problem unique to HP laptops.

No, that's one I forgot. Yep, try that too.

The power down sequence is the ONLY thing that Gateway's online tech support did.

Unfortunately - no luck. I'm guessing he's screwed.

Before I purchase a DVDR, I was wondering how exactly you make copies of things on tape and burn them to the DVD.
