So the cheapest way to get The Beatles: Rock Band if you have not had any of the games before is probably to get the software only and then get used instruments, right?
My dad has been showing interest in it, so I am weighing his options.

There is a "special value edition" of the game which comes with one standard guitar, one mic, and one drum kit - all from the first Rock Band - for $139 each for the 360 (The W at Amazon), Wii, and PS3.
I have heard that you can find excellent deals on the first Rock Band full band kits (which come with the first Rock Band game, one drum kit, one mic, and one guitar); in these cases, it might be cheaper to buy that and pick up The Beatles Rock Band by itself, but on Amazon, at least, that's still more expensive.
If you want the game by itself, you can get it for the 360, Wii, or PS3).
In a not-really-related note, they've announced that the wireless Lips mics (for the 360) will work with The Beatles Rock Band right out of the box, which is great, because those mics are pretty swell (even if Lips is kind of lacking).
I'm sad that I won't be able to buy Ringo's drum kit separately. It actually kind-of ruined my week. I don't need another guitar, and the RB drums/guitar are terrible compared to RB2. Plus, I mean, $250? That's more than some new X-Boxes go for.
*sigh*

Were you playing on easy? It seems like actual musicians have the hardest time on easy, maybe try a harder difficulty?

Actual musicianship and gaming skill don't really correlate. I couldn't pick up a real guitar and play it despite years of Guitar Hero. I might be a little more dextrous in my left hand than I used to be, but that's about it.
Here's some other stuff coming (or not coming) out this week: - The Beatles Rock Band DLC: All You Need Is Love (160 points; money goes to Doctors Without Borders; for a limited time, this is an Xbox 360-exclusive) - Wallace & Gromit Episode 2 (XBLA) has been delayed. The new release date is not yet known. - Civilization: Revolution has been added to the Games On Demand section.
Thread ahead: DS/DSi releases: week of September 14, 2009 Next thread: Wii releases: week of September 14, 2009 Previous thread: PSP Releases: week of September 6, 2009
You can order a hard drive transfer kit directly from Microsoft, but I believe they're also going to be available in stores when the new 360 hits. I think they run about $20.
