The White Sox latest loss in Minnesota was the perfect backdrop for the team unofficially raising the white flag.
Multiple media outlets reported on Monday night that slugger Jim Thome and pitcher Jose Contreras had cleared waivers and were headed out of town. Thome was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Contreras was traded to the Colorado Rockies.
For players to be eligible for the postseason with a new team, transactions had to be completed before midnight on Monday.
It looked like the Dodgers were about to be a potential first round exit, but a 3-4-5 combo of Manny, Thome, and Ethier? That's championship caliber right there. Of course, it still amounts to jack if they can't hit off Cliff Lee, but we shall see how October pans out.
Good to see this move taking place just as my fantasy team enters its playoffs with James Loney at corner infield. Sigh.
The Dodgers intend to play Thome at 1B on a regular basis? That might get ugly. Also, do they remember what happened the last time Thome went to the NL?
Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.
I guess the White Sox must want the Dodgers to get to the World Series on the 50th anniversary of their match-up by not only sending Thome to help the Dodgers win the West, but by sending Contreras to the Rockies to ensure they don't get the division or wild card.
The Dodgers also got Jon Garland (mlbtraderumors.com), while the Rockies acquired Jose Contreras (glad the Yanks got to pound him one more time). Strange timing on the surface for the Sox since they just made a splash with Peavy and Rios and appeared to be going full throttle...
I read that (yankees.lhblogs.com) Thome has played first four times in the past four season, and not once in the last two.
Originally posted by Dodger ThoughtsNed Colletti said on Prime Ticket's Dodgers Live postgame show that he and Jim Thome spoke at about 8:30 p.m. tonight, right before his trade to the Dodgers was officially completed, and Thome said that he is eager to contribute but that "playing first base is probably not going to be an option."
Thome's a pinch hitter for the next month, and maybe more depending on how well he does. Just like when the Red Sox picked up Joey Gathright (to use as PR) the other day, you can survive having guys in very limited roles the last month, and you might as well improve your team a little bit if you can.
This trade is made with an eye to the World Series. Suddenly the traditional NL scramble to fill the DH spot is dealt with in a very effective manner by the Dodgers. If they don't make it, oh well, it cost hardly anything, and they have a major PH bat from the bench until then.

His first year with the Phillies he finished 4th in the MVP voting. His second year his OPS was .977. Yes, his third year was crappy, but that was due to injuries (as proven by his really good year the next year.

Lexus, have the Yankees ever underbid two other teams and say "Hello good chap, we have three of the games best starters already. Leave fifty million on the table and join us!". No they haven't, they outbid people.
