I'm very tempted to pick up the Xbox Elite bundle (with "Fable 2" and "Halo 3"), since you're basically getting the games for free at the new price ... but I'm unsure as to whether or not there are any "improvements" in the "Fall 2009" edition that the older model is lacking.

The above link points out plenty of things that are being taken out of the newer model ... but its vague references to "newer chipsets" and whatnot isn't giving me enough information as to whether or not the hardware will be more stable/reliable/improved.

Can anyone help me out here?

Thank you kindly! So it sounds like the bundle is (in fact) the better deal ...

Does the X-Box wireless adapter really cost $100? That's absurd.

$99.99 is the MSRP. (The W at Amazon)

The Xbox 360 hard drives and the Xbox 360 component cables are proprietary and equally overpriced. Which is a shame as I'd love a bigger hard drive, but the price is a turn off. For the $160 Amazon.ca wants for a 120 GB Xbox 360 hard drive (The W at Amazon.ca), I could go to my local computer store and buy a 1.5 TB hard drive for my PC, and that's without comparison shopping or looking for a sale.

You can just buy a usb drive and use that, so I don't know why anyone would buy the official Xbox drives.

I've never understood why wireless receivers cost so much. It's not just the Microsoft one, if you go shopping, $80-100 is the common cost of those things(well last I looked). And most don't work all that great either. Overpriced for sure.

And it works well? Can I install games to it, and download DLC to it? I have never even heard this was possible (not that I had ever really considered it before now).

EDIT: It appears I cannot. I don't care about playing movies or MP3s on my Xbox, but I'd really like to play all my games off the HDD for the reduced wear on the DVD drive and the (generally slightly) improved loading times.

You can copy anything to and from it. So if like me you have a 20GB drive that fills up fast, you can download games and copy them back and forth when you want. Granted it takes a little time, but nothing terrible and much cheaper.

Or if you have the small drive already, you can upgrade it:

Okay, new question ... is there a way to tell what chipset is included in the Xbox 360? I found a deal where it's just the 360 Elite console (no bundled games), and the "Manufacturer Part #" is listed as "FAA-00059."

Is that a clue which can tell me exactly how old the chipset is, because if it's the one included in the new "Fall 2009" models (which are supposed to make the console run smoother and quieter than its predecessors) then that'll be a pretty good deal.

No, I don't believe the part number differentiates them. FAA-00059 appears to represent the Elite model.

From what I can tell, there are 5 different motherboards that have been used for the XBOX 360. Two of them don't have HDMI ports: the Xenon (the original model), and the Opus (which is not available for retail, is given to people who had the Xenon when their Xenon system dies under warranty).

So we're down to the Zephyr, the Falcon, and the Jasper. The easiest way to tell appears to be the power supply. Each time they make a revision, Microsoft needs less wattage to run the 360. The Zephyr, has a 203 watt power supply and a 12 volt rail of 16.5 amps. Power supply information is on the power cord, and 12 volt rail information is on the console ( http://giftguide.toptenreviews.com/?p=2721 shows you where to look for the 12 volt rail). The Falcon, released late in 2007, has a 175 watt power supply and 12 volt rail of 14.2. The Jasper, released later 2008, has a 150 watt power supply and 12 volt rail of 12.1. Reading the 12 volt rail off the console is more accurate than reading the power supply.

If you can't read that then the link above gives you information for what you are looking for the box to say.

Yeah, I played the original game on Dreamcast as well as the European imported game on the DC as well. Both games are really amazing and unique games considering the games during the time they were made.
