They promise they'll revisit in 2010 add some from the last bit of 2009 if events warrant, but for now GIANT LIST HAVING TIME:

http://pitchfork.com/p2k/

Today is 500 through 201. The remainder of our weekdays will see 200-101, 100-51, 50-21, and 20-1. Later when I have time I'll work some magic to extract JUST the list and post it over here (maybe) but if you go THERE, a good portion of their selections come with the ability for you to hear them, so if they look totally unfamiliar to you (as most of them do to ME), you can click away.

This could take a while.

The ten best tracks of the 00s
1. Radiohead - Optimistic
2. Radiohead - The National Anthem
3. Radiohead - Everything in its Right Place
4. Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely
5. Radiohead - Kid A
6. Radiohead - Treefingers
7. Radiohead - Motion Picture Soundtrack
8. Radiohead - Idioteque
9. Radiohead - Morning Bell
10. Justice - Phantom Pt. II
11. Radiohead - In Limbo

Re: The list

457. Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton - Doctor Blind

Depressing.

419. Klaxons - Golden Skans

Dododododododo...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Probably ranked a little high. Top 5000 I could see.

415. Alicia Keys - You Don't Know My Name

Oops wait. It's the "reggae remix." Is she still an A-List singer, because it seems that after all these years, this song and Fallin' are still her best songs.

327. Vampire Weekend - Walcott

What a bizarre choice for the obligatory VW pick, unless they get another spot. One (Blaaaaaaaake's Got a New Face) is way better.

322. Wu-Tang Clan - Uzi (Pinky Ring)

Finally some respect for this song. It really should be even higher.

308. Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.

If Clint Eastwood doesn't make it, and this ends up being the only 500 pick, I can understand. For the masses, this is THE Gorillaz song. But the bolder and better choice could've been either 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) or El Mañana. Demon Days might be the ALBUM of the decade too, in case you haven't listened recently.

286. ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Another Morning Stoner

Instant Classic.

263. Coldplay - Yellow

The fact that they include this leads me to believe that Clocks is a real contender for #1.

257*. The Flaming Lips - Fight Test

Stolen.

251. Eminem - Without Me

There are about seven tracks on his previous album (Marshall Mathers LP - 2000) that lay waste to this goof of a song.

232. Destiny's Child - Jumpin' Jumpin'

See? P4k has a sense of humor.

Vegas Odds for #1
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army 3:1
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out 4:1
TV on the Radio - Wolf Like Me 6:1
Outkast - Ms. Jackson 10:1
Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies) 15:1
Sufjan Stevens - Chicago 20:1
Kanye West - Jesus Walks 50:1
(PLEASE LIKE THEIR WAS ANY OTHER CHOICE -- Kanye West)

Clocked in (AH HA HA) at #155.

It looks like it's following the pattern - stuff I never heard of early, followed by things I recognise, and then probably moving back to things I never heard of near the top - because they're critics and I'm a guy who occasionally listens to music. Spacing this stuff over multiple pages is a major pain, though - I GOTTA find some way to rip out all the data and get it on one massive page nobody will ever look at. (And maybe monetize it somehow. Yeah.)

It's also hard to believe that some of the stuff on that list is from, say, 2000 or 2001 because it feels so "late 90s" to me. Maybe time ISN'T speeding up after all - merely my own recollection of it. Whoa...deep.

If any of this spurs you to purchase music digitally, I will leave it to you to decide whether your conscience will be happier if you buy through Pitchfork to give them the dime, or enter a title into the search box on our shoppin' page and give us the dime.

Also, for the love of God, there's gotta be SOMETHING in this list that makes you want to tack a reply onto this thread. COME ON MUSIC PEOPLE

This song makes the list due to the assistance of Guru Zim's repeated watching of the video back in his San Diego days.

I predict #1 is "Hey Ya."

Or some obscure, Japan-only Animal Collective b-side remix that only Pitchfork writers care about.

Lists; Fucking lists. I've had a couple of really good conversations about music in the last few weeks and not one of them has had anything to do with "The Best" of anything. As much as I enjoy messageboard "conversations" and their ability to provide viewpoints I wouldn't normally get to hear due to the relative insularity of my social interactions, I can't see getting into a serious debate about whether "Hey Ya" or "Crazy" is "better". And there's a ton of other good music on that list that someone somewhere could make a case for depending on his or her particular bent.

When it comes to music I'd rather listen to someone tell me what they like personally and why rather than sit back and snark about what made it, what didn't, and the relative placement of my favorite song vs. yours.

Or maybe I'm just bitter because some of the best songs I know of the last 10 years didn't make the list ;P

I promise to have a reply once the rest of the list comes out, as right now I am like Frank Costanza and I have a lot of problems with those people, but perhaps some of them may be resolved in the top 50.

113. Kelis - "Milkshake"

Really? I hated this song so much. Plus whenever someone mentions a milkshake, someone else always feels obligated to bring up this song. No thank you.

192. Pulp - "Sunrise"

This is an ok song by Pulp. Not the choice I would have made. If we're talking about Pulp songs from the 2000's I would think that "Bad Cover Version" would be a better choice. Or "Wickerman". That song is incredible.

388. Sigur Ros - "Hoppipolla"

This is one of the most beautiful songs of all time. Should have been higher.

This actually isn't a terrible list so far.

OK, I never post in the music folder, so it should come as no surprise that between numbers 159 and 50 I can only name 10 songs (one of those is a maybe, based on the band name and it possibly being in a commercial, and another is from a viral video). I'm recovering from a concussion, so I haven't made my way through the rest of the list, but I don't expect it to get much better from here.

I'm excited Interpol's "Obstacle 1" came in at 64. I love that song so hard.

This list needs more Shakira.

    426. Bob Dylan - "Mississippi"

YOU KNOW IT
WOO WOO WOO

My favorite song of the 0ughts!!! Well, that and "Carol Brown" by Flight of the Conchords.

Mississippi is generally considered B.Dylan's top latter day masterpiece so I'm pretty sure this is as high as my man is gonna get. Here, then, is the rest of the Bitchdork Top 10 Bob Dylan songs of the 2000s.

3. High Water
4. 'Cross the Green Mountain
5. Ain't Talkin'

I realize that U2 aren't Pitchfork favourites and that I'm obviously biased in their favour since I'm a big fan, but.....no U2 songs at all in the first 450 entries? Seriously? Beautiful Day? Vertigo? Magnificent? City of Blinding Lights?

Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

You DID almost get them all in the right order, though - that's kind of impressive!

(You really like "Crazy in Love" more than "Deja Vu?")

How great is Kylie at #37? Pretty frickin' great.

If "Galang" is #34, is "Paper Planes" a lock for the Top 10, or will it be eschewed due to its popularity?

I'm guessing no drum&bass in the Top 20. I guess the 2000s weren't the genre's decade after all. :(

Same for me and Springsteen. I'm still holding out hope that "The Rising" or something from Magic will make the list.

I do like that there are some hummable/danceable pop tunes are up there, though. No argument from me on "Umbrella" or "Since U Been Gone".

I had the right group, wrong song... but "B.O.B." is my favorite Outkast song anyway. Like a million elephants and silverback orangutans, you can't stop it...

"My Girls" is really the 9th best song of the decade? I knew those snob-darlings would sneak in there somewhere...

I just don't like "Paper Planes" at all. Saying it is the 3rd best song of the decade is crap. Switch it with "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" and we've got a match. Oh, and I agree with Fuzzy. "Do You Realize?" should be ranked in at least the top 20.
