CM Punk again begins the show with an in-ring promo. He's not scared of TLC, and it's not Hardy's advantage. He won 2 MITB LADDER matches in consecutive WrestleManias, and he's proved he can handle a chair with his attacks on Jeff. The only way to prove he's right to all the fans is to end Hardy once and for all. Teddy Long brings out a hobbled world champ, and Jeff's rebuttal is short. He holds the title aloft. Teddy says Jeff will wrestle at SummerSlam but not tonight. Later in the show, however, Vince calls Teddy on the cell (Teddy uses his entrance theme as a ringtone) and demands Jeff take on the Hart Dynasty tonight.

Finlay vs. Dolph Ziggler
Finlay traps Dolph between the ring apron and the banner skirt to pummel him. Mike Knox walks out to club Finlay in the leg with his shillelagh. Ziggler (possibly unaware) hits the Move With No Name for the pin. Knox attacks Finlay with the Knox Block and a sideslam on the ring steps. Knox delivers a clumsy threat to Finlay about vertebrae and pain. He's still speaking sotto voce, which is cool. But, come on, name that Ziggler finisher, people. The Perfect Ending?

Kane goes Red Dragon on Singh backstage for a videotaped message. Later on, Khali finds the translator hanging upside down. Kane attacks Khali with a steel pipe and claims he was never afraid of him.

CM Punk vs. John Morrison
The announcers sell this as Morrison trying for three straight wins over the former world champ. Punk wrestling as a heel is actually more fun than him as a face; he varies his attacks more, and his meaner offense is nice. He ties up Morrison in a figure-four headlock and elbows his head repeatedly. He hits a prone Morrison on the apron with a kneedrop from the turnbuckle. When he goes for the G2S, he yells out "NAPTIME!" Morrison eludes but can't hit the Starship Pain either. As Punk complains to the ref about a slow count, Morrison nails him with the running knee. A second Starship Pin try is blocked, and Morrison is in the Tree of Woe. Punk works him over and scoops him up nicely in the G2S position, and that's really it. After the pin, Punk gives him a Dan Henderson shot for old times and then holds up his hands innocently when the ref admonishes. Heel Punk is a joy to behold.

Melina vs. Layla
Layla teased Melina with Michelle McCool's return next week. Melina told her to take it to the ring. Melina wins with the screaming split legdrop.

Unified tag champ Big Show vs. JTG w/ Shad Gaspar
Before the match, Cryme Tyme changes their chant to "tag team champions yeah yeah." Edmonton is unimpressed. Jericho sits with the announcers. When JTG is chucked outside, Jericho ambushes Shad. Show throws JTG back inside for a huge chokeslam and Steiner recliner win. An irate Shad challenges Show to no avail.

World champ Jeff Hardy vs. Hart Dynasty
It's a two-one-one tag match, and Hardy hurts himself with the pendulum dropkick. The announcers wisely note that his style did what the lack of Hart offense could. The crowd is mixed in their cheers. The Dynasty go to town on him, and a brief comeback delays the inevitable. The Swanton is blocked, and a springboard Hart Attack ends the match. Punk walks out to give Hardy some more, but Morrison runs in to save. The heels take control, but Matt Hardy saves Jeff from another head Pillmanizer. Jeff warily accepts his help to stand up.

Vince walks up to Teddy backstage, and Teddy says the obligatory six-man match will main-event next week's show. Vince can offer no criticism and says Teddy is still on probation.

I will agree that Dolph's finishing move needs a name instead of a "running backwards bulldog" or whatever it was called on Smackdown.

The match between CM Punk and Morrison was the best match of the night (if not the best match of the week). I liked it when CM Punk dived off the ring apron and hit the knees to the back of the body ( I was like holy s***!). CM Punk is indeed doing a great job as a heel; as I have mentioned before, it is shame Jeff Hardy is taking a leave of absence because the feud between Punk and Jeff Hardy is simply golden. However, Morrison and Punk always put on good matches, so that wouldn't be a bad idea to have those two feud.

Matt Hardy is a face now? There is simply no logic behind it; Matt Hardy (storyline-wise), tried to put Jeff out for good and said he was sick and tired of carrying him all his life. Now Matt Hardy is seemingly a face because Jeff is leaving after SummerSlam? I am not sure about this because it almost makes Matt heel status pretty irrelevant and less credible. If the WWE "needs" Matt Hardy to be a face, they better make a good storyline and or explanation to all this.

I really don't have any other strong thoughts about last night's Smackdown except that I think Smackdown is better than Raw now primarily because we see different feuds instead of Trips, Cena, and Orton monopolizing face time and storylines.

Matt Hardy's heel run WAS pretty irrelevant and not credible. All sides put a lot of effort into making Matt a heel but it just didn't fly. One problem is the Hardys have such a strong online social networking presence that people knew they didn't hate each other. Hardy vs. Hardy just didn't work like WWE wanted it to. But if Jeff leaves, this is a massive opportunity for Matt to finally get in the main event and take Jeff's place against Punk, who ought to be the World Champion after Summerslam and is the hottest heel in the business right now.

Way to demolish Cryme Tyme and make them look not remotely credible against JeriShow. They have no chance in hell.

The elevation of The Hart Dynasty to the main event is a good thing. The Harts will definitely benefit from being in the ring with the Hardys, Morrison and Punk.

The match with Morrison was one of Punk's best efforts in a while. He was booked very strongly with that decisive finish on Morrison. And he was all over the show kicking Hardy's ass.

Jeff and Matt Hardy were looking pretty orange, brother!

Well, JTG DID beat Jericho last week. And Shad got to push Big Show over the top rope or whatever this week. I have no problem with how they booked things thus far.

Oh did he? I was traveling and missed last week's show entirely. I regret missing the Punk chair beatdown on Hardy last week.

As ridiculous as it was that he burned down Jeff's house, killed his dog, attempted vehicular manslaughter, blew Jeff up, etc., it's still best for all parties if Matt's heel turn is quietly forgotten about. Matt was really good as the centerpiece ECW face, no one will boo him, and running with Jeff's torch after he leaves would be important on a show with little babyface depth even after Undertaker's return (and my guess is that Kane is being rebuilt as a heel for one more run to glory with the returning UT).

I think it would be great to get Matt to his Michael Hayes-backed 2007-08 level as a Smackdown babyface and let him have a real run on that side like all these other glass ceiling dudez flourishing on SD. Unfortunately I can't help but think that this is just a setup for Matt to SHOCKINGLY re-turn on Jeff at SummerSlam to become a bigger, still not over heel.

Matt and Jeff are brothers, and brothers fight. They also make up. It's not that hard to believe. It's not like they were hugging all over each other, you could still see apprehension in both of their eyes.

Yes, it is probably because Jeff is on the way out, but so what? The heel turn didn't work as well as they planned, although I didn't mind it. It served it's possible purpose, keeping Jeff out of a high profile match at Mania. I never thought they had enough faith in Jeff to book a WM moment for him in case he failed a drug test the next day. So a feud with Matt was the safe bet.

Why do they book Morrison like he is the hottest thing going, yet he makes less appearances on PPV that tag team title matches?

Do brothers burn down each other's houses and try to run them off the road as well?

No. In the wacky world of pro wrestling, Primo and Carlito could be friends again. Matt and Jeff couldn't. They should turn him back anyway though.

Kane and the Undertaker seem to think so. (Maybe not running each other off the road, but killing their parents in the fire probably makes up for that.)

Not to mention Kane burning, and burying Taker alive at various points. Even former best friends Shawn and HHH tried to damn near kill each other for about 3 years, then were best friends for no apparent reason when they reformed DX, other than to sell shit loads of merch. In wrestling, it doesn't matter what happened before, it only matters what can happen now to make money. Everyone buries the hatchet when storylines need to be freshened up.

I would love for Matt to come out and explain his actions in a tweener sort of way. Like "What I did to Jeff is one thing, but we're family. I'll be damned if you lay a finger on him again. I'm his older brother and it's my RIGHT to lay a whooping down on him if I feel like he needs it. You'll have to get through me if you want to attack him again, because no one can lay a finger on him but ME!"

It won't happen, but at least it would be different.

Different and it'd make sense. Matt didn't seem all that enthused with the idea of helping Jeff, but he did (from how I've heard it described), so it would make sense to cast it in this light.
