Quick recap: Two years ago, Sinestro created his own Lantern corps to counter the Green Lantern corps. The Sinestro Corps Special issue ended with a blowaway spread of Sinestro, Cyborg Superman, Superman Prime, and the Anti-Monitor, a coalition of villains that put the Injustice Gang to shame. The DC heroes eventually prevailed, but the saga ended with the remains of the Anti-Monitor getting sucked into a mysterious Black Lantern by an unknown source. Two years later, we have...

BLACKEST NIGHT #1

The DCU is having a day of remembrance for all their fallen. The rebuilt Coast City remembers the day that Mongul (father of the current Mongul) and Cyborg Superman first destroyed it. The DC heroes mourn their fallen in various places. The Flash Rogues also mourn in their secret graveyard. In the Gotham cemetery, Black Hand shows up and digs up Bruce Wayne's unmarked grave and steals his skull.

Hal Jordan and Barry Allen are in the Watchtower, looking over the storage of some of the DC villains' deceased remains. This is the fallout from a Nightwing story-arc in which villain remains were being harvested for parts. Barry asks about who's died while he was gone. Hal answers with a ring construct and the list is quite extensive. They're interrupted by a frantic call from Alfred, who tells them that Bruce Wayne's grave has been dug up.

Meanwhile, on Oa, the Guardians lament being unable to prevent the War of Light. They're interrupted when rogue Guardian Scar FINALLY turns on the Guardians, which has been built up since the end of the Sinestro Corps war. And does Scar EVER turn on the Guardians, killing some of them brutally while trapping others. Those killed have their hearts ripped out of their chests. Yeesh!

Carter Hall is on the phone with Ray Palmer, who wants to mourn his loss of Jean Loring. Hawkman goes into a rage and smashes the phone, to prevent Palmer from coming over. Hal and Barry investigate the grave, as Barry asks the important questions: Who knew Bruce was buried there and who knew Bruce was Batman? And on Oa, the Green Lantern suddenly see a whole lot of flying Black Rings, which break through their constructs and start re-animating various dead GL's. The rings find various dead targets throughout the universe. And at the Gotham cemetery, Hal and Barry run into Black Lantern Martian Manhunter, who tells them both that they should still be dead.

Back with the Hawks, Hawkgirl is suddenly stabbed through the back with a spear. Carter looks up to see Black Lantern Elongated Man and Black Lantern Sue Dibny! Hawkman tries to fight to no avail, as Zombie Ralph savagely beats him to death. Hawkman and Hawkgirl are killed, as Black Hand walks in to take in the carnage.

Issue ends with Black Rings gracing the hands of the fallen Hawks, telling them to "Rise".

-----------------

Well, it'd be silly to think that ANYTHING could live up to two years' worth of hype. But this came pretty close. Obviously nothing can match the sheer shock factor of that Sinestro Corps Special from two years ago, but this first Blackest Night issue sets up the foundation for something memorable.

A lot of questions have risen from this first issue. The importance of Bruce Wayne, the nature of the Black Lanters (Ralph and Sue only seemed to be running on 0.01% of power and still killed Hawkman and Hawkgirl handily), what'll happen when the GL's find out what happened to the Guardians. These are all answers that will unfold through the next few months and it looks to be a fun ride.

Ivan Reis also proves himself more than capable of drawing a story of this magnitude. The two-page spread of Hal creating a construct of the fallen heroes is a must-see.

It may not be on the same plane as the first Sinestro Corps Special, but that was somewhat of an impossible task anyway. On its own, Blackest Night #1 wins. Get in on the ground floor now, because this will be a fun story.

Thumbs way up!

Been waiting all day for someone to post something about Blackest Night. As much as I loved Sinstero Corp War, Blackest Night issue #1 blows it out of the water. This has been building longer then two years it is almost ten years worth of storylines are going to be resolved in this series. The Hawks' deaths is just amazingly bloody as is the destruction of the Guardians. I will say I think the reason Bruce is so important is that he was the last one to escape death when he shouldn't have. Another theory is that he is Earth-2 Bruce Wayne which people point as the beginning of the deaths of the DCU. I don't know how much stoke I put into that, but Dido did say the body buried was not Bruce's. I can not wait for the Martian Manhunter vs. Barry/Hall in Green Lantern next week. I am totally blown away by this, I even turned to my wife after reading it and said "This shit got real."

From what I understand, this is everything I feared it would be.

Feh.

Glad I am not buying.

I know the purists will balk, but the Zombie Dibneys beating the Hawks to death and then resurrecting them was pretty cool. "I smell a mystery", indeed.

What I am confused about is Bruce's remains. In a recent Batman issue, Superman gives Dick the cape and cowl and says something like "This is all that was left", which made me wonder what happened to his charred body in Final Crisis. I guess this issue backs up what happened in FC. But if Bruce's bones are buried, who was that writing on cave walls at the end of FC?

Considering how stupid Final Crisis turned out to be, I won't be surprised to learn that the guy writing on the wall was not Bruce, but somebody else. Its a shame that Final Crisis came out first or came out at all due to the mess that Blackest Night has to clean up. It would have been better to do R.I.P Batman and then go to the Blackest Night. The downfall to Blackest Night if there will be one is how much Geoff is going to have side-step Dido has said in the media/conversations and Morrison's terrible writing.

It's still Bruce in the past, as it's one of the side effects of Darkseid's Omega Sanction. He still lives in the past, yet left a corpse in the present. If that blows people's minds, imagine peoples' brains exploding with whatever happens with Superboy (resurrected in the future, but his corpse from IC is still in the present) and Kid Flash (resurrected in the future as a teen, but his adult corpse is still in the present).

You'd think no combination of resurrection and time travel should cause a DC/Marvel hero to bat an eye.

And I'd expect that this mini-series will change that quite a bit in the DCU going forward . . . at least in good writers' hands, but of course, it's still early so let's see.

I for one loved the first issue, but first issue of the Tales of the Corps mini notsomuch (except for the first hints at what the Indigo Tribe is and will be doing). I also loved the promotional Black Lantern ring that most shops got to hand out to those buying the issue (I reeeeaaaallllly hope they do versions of the other rings as well). I'm enthused.

What DC really needs to do is put Geoff Johns in control as a "Continuity Cop" who can keep this stuff in check so we don't have all of these glitches that keep needing to be "fixed." I realize he's got a lot on his plate already, but I still think he's the man for the job.

Ivan Reis' work was stellar on this too. Very pretty and dynamic to look at so let's hope he stays on schedule!

Drew, if they release them all, I picture you with all the rings in the Hal Jordan pose from the cover of Green Lantern (volume 2)#49.

One of the best tidbits I saw come from SDCC this weekend was that Geoff Johns said DC would be doing more ring giveaways so that just may happen ;-)

I believe that Johns already has some sort of role similar to that already, from when he signed his exclusive a couple years ago.

Although I'd rather see Waid or Morrison in that job.

The chapter from OJ Simpson's book has been leaked. It is, as you would expect, pretty disgusting. He claims not to want his kids to read the details of their mother's death but basically blames her for putting him in the situation.
