Jeff and CM Punk start the show again with dialogue. Jeff admits he had drug problems but is proud to have passed every drug test within the last year. Punk asks him if that's really something to brag about. Punk takes some verbal shots at him, and there is very little ambiguity left for the audience.

World champ CM Punk vs. John Morrison
A somewhat pedestrian match is highlighted by a reversal sequence that begins with a Morrison hurracarana from the turnbuckle. Punk holds on to make it a sunset flip. It gets two. Morrison flips over to get two, and Punk bridges up and hits a butterfly backbreaker. Punk blocks a Starship Pain and tries to convert it to a GTS. Morrison avoids, and Punk goes for a Majistral. Morrison shifts his weight and gets another reversal pinfall. He wants a handshake (despite Punk, um, punking him last time), but the champ slides out of the ring in frustration.

Layla does a Miami Heat cheerleader routine before Rocky Ortiz interrupts. She doesn't appreciate that.

Kane vs. R Truth
Maybe it's the new opponents. Maybe it's the small vacation. Kane has new spots in his matches lately, and it makes him more interesting. He's clearly the heel, but he's not squashing opponents. He's crafty now. He gets the win after booting Truth coming down from the turnbuckle. Khali and Truth chase him off.

The Hart Dynasty vs. Cryme Tyme and Eve
The feud does nothing for me. Eve does a nice running cartwheel moonsault, but Natalya pins her after a discus clothesline.

Edge speaks from an undisclosed office sofa and says his career might be done. Former partner Jericho interrupts in the ring to call him fragile and weak. Edge promises to return and prove him wrong. Jericho promises to reveal his handpicked new partner at the Sunday PPV.

Undisputed tag champ Chris Jericho/ Dolph Ziggler vs. IC champ Rey Mysterio/Jeff Hardy
Ziggler will take on Rey at the PPV, so he's not Jericho's partner. Christian would be a fun pick. Hardy throws Jericho at Punk at ringside. Punk throws Jericho back at Hardy, who hits the steel steps. The match ends in a DQ. Rey objects, and Ziggler baseball slides into him. He hits his Unnamed Finisher on the floor, and Jericho hits Hardy with a Codebreaker in the ring.

Ziggler and Morrison look strong these days.

Was leaving out the Delicious Pretty Ricky segment indicative of how baffled you were by it? Not exactly a championized move for Truth.

Someone suggested it was his Bruno, and I ... I'm just baffled by it. I know TNA had Killings off in Hollywood for what I assumed was the basis for skits. Maybe he thinks he can crossover into comedy too.

Loved this show. Even cryme tyme didn't bug me this week.
Jericho's promo was gold, and who knows..Edge-Jericho would be a solid WM match >

It's funny, my friend with whom I always watch wrestling never liked Punk. Until now.
He totally loves the righteous heelishness that he is oozing atm.
I loved how Punk was so close to bitching at the crowd for cheering for Jeff while HE should be their rolemodel.
But he didn't. Which makes it even better imo.

It's a shame that there will be Raw matches on the next ppv, because once more the show will be carried by Smackdown.

Ziggler continues to impress me every week. I can only imagine how many ways he can hit that finisher of his. It looks painful, and it happens so fast...the last time i was that impressed with a finisher, it was when I saw the RKO for the first time. Randy can pull that thing out of thin air.

Awesome Smackdown this week.

Hi. For the last year since Punk won the World Title the first time I've been railing against him. My 180 turn is complete. I love him as a heel. I also loved the finish where Punk couldn't complete that Majestral and got pinned. It's funny how Morrison vs. Punk happened all over ECW two summers ago and I didn't care but now, if it's the Smackdown main event of Summerslam, I'll be stoked.

The newest thing I can praise Smackdown for is how well the Divas are being integrated with the midcard guys. I praise Eve entirely for how much more tolerable Cryme Tyme is becoming (and Eve's finisher is pretty sweet. She seems like she could evolve into a good wrestler given time.) The Maria and Ziggler thing is proceeding nicely with just little teases that somehow don't infringe on her being a face and his being a heel. The Layla and Ortiz segment didn't go anywhere interesting but that doesn't mean it couldn't. The use of the Divas on Smackdown is worlds better than how the RAW Divas get one segment of all of them lumped together (in bikinis this week - an improvement) and then they all just disappear and don't matter.

Weird to see Edge suddenly as a face after being one of the most despicable men in WWE for four years.

If I ever gain the ability to not fast forward immediately upon seeing R-Truth, I may have an opinion on Pretty Ricky.

Finally, my buddy in Miami went to the tapings. He said the advertised dark main event was Punk vs. Hardy in a cage. Since the cage wasn't used on TV, it wasn't hanging above the ring. After Hardy was laid out to end TV, Hardy remained in the ring motionless while the crew built the cage around him. Then when it came time for the match, Hardy, still on the mat and trying to get up, received the ring introduction: "Already in the ring..."

I thought most of your haterade from Punk came from you thinking he was over-rated in the ring, not that you didn't like his face character.

That's true to a degree. I didn't like how he was booked to win the World Title last year and didn't think his ability was up to par with what being the top guy means, especially on RAW. Change of scenery and change of character can do wonders. In the ring, Punk isn't any different, but Smackdown removed Punk from the aura of not being in the same league (certainly not booked in the same manner) as RAW's Super Duper Stars. Against guys like Hardy and Morrison, Punk isn't immediately outmatched. The heel persona is icing on the cake because now I find Punk INTERESTING. And as a heel, he can lose but maintain his heat more easily. It's all come together for him on Smackdown in ways it likely wouldn't on RAW.

Just for history's sake, I want to note once more that the head creative writer for the show featuring Cryme Tyme and Pretty Ricky is Michael Hayes. It really should be placed before the show, like a disclaimer.

That being said, I kind of dig Delicious fo shizzle.

Not only is CM Punk not outmatched by how big the stars are on Raw but they're also bigger in physical size. I like CM Punk's work for the most part working with Hardy, Edge, Jericho, Mysterio, Morrison is going to be a lot more his speed thank Batista, Triple H, Cena. Even good smaller guys can't always mesh with big guys (One of the reasons I'm worried about the Daniels/Morgan match at the next TNA ppv). So even though he might not be doing different maneuvers it works better.

We'll have to disagree on that one. The RKO is so slow and predictable, especially after watching DDP's Diamond Cutter for a few years, which was 100 times better. I think the move is better suited for a face too.

While I agree that the Diamond RKO Cutter is a great move for a face, I've seen Randy land it in a blink of an eye, from someone in air, from the second turnbuckle, so it's all good.

I really don't know what the difference between a DC and an RKO is (I could look it up, but its late)...but I'm sure they're fundamentally the same thing.

This sounds like a good opportunity to post this really old interview with Punk that I happened across recently, where he talks about how prefers working heel and that his look just works better as a heel.

Like I said, the interview is several years old, but it's a really good read, giving some good insight into Punk's mindset and his experiences within the indies prior to making it to the big time.

Generally, Randy leaps before the RKO. What gave the Diamond Cutter such snap is that Page would simply fall flat down from a standing position.

There's been some good RKO's (I'm thinking when he won his first title, the reversal of the chokeslam), but I'll always prefer the Diamond Cutter. It was the Stunner of WCW but from multiple angles.

The only time the mid-air RKO out of nowhere shocked me was the first time. Everytime after that you saw it coming a mile.

I do give the RKO credit for when people reverse it. It looks spectacular when someone heaves Randy half way across the ring, or when HHH threw him out of the ring entirely.

Man, this is making me miss DDP. Randy may have that "pull a victory out of his ass" down, but the Diamond Cutter just had that "fuck, not only can DDP hit it out of nowhere, he can do it when you expect him to do something else."

A few faves are:

-Instead of doing a back slide, he flipped a guy over into the Cutter.
-Set up a guy for a powerbomb, but twisted him off his shoulder into the Cutter.
-turned a vertical suplex into the Cutter (Think Mickey Whipwreck called it the Whipper Snapper and R-Truth had this a move for a bit in TNA)

Cena can't be beat because he's some unholy genetic recombinate of superstars past. I mean, you might as well call him John "Realest of the Real, Sargent Rock - Cold - A - Mania" Cena.
