Is this the Walt Monegan thing rearing its head again? Family problems? A moment of clarity on her sinking popularity? Either way, this doesn't exactly inspire confidence for her potental run in 2012.
It's really weird. Her explanation was mostly that a lot of governors go on junkets and such when they're lame ducks, and she didn't want to do that. But she could just, well, stay in office and not do that.
Andrea Mitchell is reporting that she's getting out of politics entirely. Pat Buchanan, on the other hand, is basically saying that she just wants to spend time campaigning and fundraising for as many Republicans as possible, so as to pick up their support for 2012.
I don't think she has a chance in 2012 anyway. But, no, it doesn't inspire confidence.
I sense she was offered a bigger spot somewhere else. I thought she was up for re-election next year and not a lame duck governor. The entire thing smells really fishy and quitting a government job when most of the country is in a finical and wartime crisis does not inspire the confidence to be the leader of said country. Hopefully, Mitchell is right and we never see her in a position of power ever again. However, I think Pat is right and this is all about gaining momentum for 2012.
Wow. Her rambling speech today was a trainwreck. I've heard rumblings of a looming embezzlement scandal dating back to her days as mayor - something to do with improprieties involving improvements done on the Palin home and the vendor of a sports complex in Wasilla.
By the timing of this, her pacing during the press conference, and the nonsensical explanation for the move, I am in the "something is brewing" camp.
Either way, this rules out any kind of 2012 campaign, right?
I can't believe she or anyone else thinks this would be a good move if she did intend to run for President.
Gotta believe it's something scandal wise that's making her step down, or major radio/tv/book deals. She could never be President anyway, but she could be a female Glenn Beck I suppose.
If I had to pick a conspiracy reason, I would go with: Nude photos must have surfaced.
//edit: Clarifying that I have no knowledge of nudes nor if they exist. It just occurs to me that this is something that Palin was in a position to have done, and if she had done, might have thought she was smart enough to lie about it and get away with it.
A less sensational reason could be that she just couldn't handle the pressure.
I have no idea and this is all just opinion. I don't take politicians at face value any longer - as a group, they lie too often.
Everything about her resignation signals to me that she's running for President in 2012. It really seemed like an early stump speech. I think the Vanity Fair article made it clear that, if she had any aspirations for a 2012 run, she needed to lay low for a little while and regroup, and I think that is precisely what she is going to do, only to re-emerge when the time is right.
We all have ways of coping. I use sex and awesomeness.
Hmm, two children under the age of 2 in the house, other young children at home, eldest son off to war, continued media scrutiny, about the right age for early symptoms of menopause...

Musharraf's playing a very tricky balancing act. Most Pakistanis are not "heels" and in fact were very pro-US until we imposed sanctions on them after they tested a nuke, due to our general support of them over Soviet-backed India.
