New champ CM Punk hits the ring to defend his actions. The crowd is split until Jeff Hardy arrives. Jeff says Punk is selfish and wonders what his fans think. Crowd chants for Jeff. Punk says Jeff picked the PPV match and put himself in a bad situation. No matter who won that match, Punk says, he was gonna challenge immediately after. Jeff wants a rematch tonight.

Edge interjects to demand the rematch instead. He says Jeff has the shortest title reign in history and thus doesn't deserve it. He says Punk's history with MITB proves Punk wants to be like Edge. "Straight EDGE? HELLO." Hardy attacks both, hitting the Twist of Fate on Punk and flattening him with the Swanton. Teddy Long makes a No. 1 Contender's match for the main event.

Chris Jericho claims he unmasked Rey "for the first time ever" and deserves a title shot. Teddy instead gives him a non-title match against Punk tonight.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Great Khali
Khali dominates, but Dolph fends him off at ringside by holding the translator hostage and slides in for the countout win. Ziggler needs a new opponent, and I hope this ends their angle.

Melina/Gail Torres vs. Layla/Women's champ Michelle McCool
Melina hits a nice twirling head scissors into a standing back kick. Michelle pins her by reversing a sunset flip into the Faithbreaker.

A Don't Try This at Home ad airs.

Charlie Haas/Shelton Benjamin vs. John Morrison/R-Truth
Morrison does Melina one better by hitting a twirling head scissors into a Side Russian. He also nails Haas with a springboard dropkick. Is he doing new moves each week?! Truth skins the cat in the corner, but Shelton uses Angle's pop-up superplex to take control. Morrison drops Haas with the Moonlight Drive but doesn't get a clean Starship Pain and clangs Haas right on the arm. Looks much like Angle's moonsault that broke Hardcore Holly's arm. Morrison does get the pin.

Jericho (with Rey's mask) claims he removed Mysterio's burden of deceit and did him a favor. He works the crowd to dilute any heel heat Punk might garner.

IC champ Chris Jericho vs. World champ CM Punk (nontitle)
A nice match sees many reversals. Jericho can't get a pin off the Codebreaker, and Punk scoops him up for a clean G2S and pin.

Edge vs. Jeff Hardy (Number One contender match)
A nice 20+ minute bout, and both men sell the ladder match injuries. Hardy goes for Edge's shoulder, and Edge goes for Hardy's left knee. Punk sits in for commentary, and Todd and JR hail his Sunday title victory as a "very smart, very timely." Punk says he hopes the fans overcome their dislike for him but says straight-edge has never been a cool option. As the match draws to a close, Edge chucks Hardy into Punk. Punk charges Edge in the ring, giving Edge a DQ win. Hardy dispatches Edge and goes after Punk. Punk hits the G2s and stands with the title. Teddy makes a triple threat match for the belt on RAW.

A hot show with much energy. Almost any combination of these wrestlers makes for a good match, but it does feel like we need those new combinations now. Jericho will need a mini-angle until Rey returns. Dolph needs a new face to fight. Morrison has dominated Haas repeatedly, and I fear we're headed toward a Morrison/R-Truth misunderstanding and feud.

Still, this eclipses RAW's stuff these days.

Here in Philadelphia at least, the show had this weird digital-slo-mo look to it. My girlfriend described it perfectly as the way the MTV Video Awards always look... Did the show look like that everywhere else? Did that have anything to do with the DTV changeover on MyNetwork's end?

Also, any combo of Jericho/Hardy/Edge/Punk is fine by me. Keep it up, SD!

Yeah I had it as well and I wondered if it had anything to do with the switch too.

I had the slo-mo effect too. I noticed it was only during the show itself; commercials looked normal.

I thought this show was fantastic. Even the women stepped up their game this week, and of course the two final matches were great. JR's commentary work was interesting too.

I really hate that Raw is so crappy most weeks now, because Friday night is just not a good night for me and TV. Even as good as SD is nowadays, I just can't always sit down during the weekend to watch it, while mondays nights is still a tradition with me.

I get the same Philly market as S_S, so I obviously got the same MTV style effects, and it sucked. I hope this is not a recurring theme.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds that video look weird and undesirable. And, yes, I was totally thinking of the MTV awards. I'm afraid I'm not watching the Philly affiliate, so it's the way it is.

Is it just me, or did Jericho's promo about Rey seemed predicated on the assumption that either everyone had gotten a good look at Rey's face or Rey couldn't just put on one of his other masks for the next time he wrestles (if not both)? It didn't make a lot of sense to me.

I'm sure we'll be told Rey's honour won't allow it or something, but 'wear another mask' does seem the obvious solution. Between that and telling the fans they had probably "failed in everything they'd accomplished to try" (or whatever the heck he wound up saying) it wasn't the finest of promos from ole Chris.

I think the main aim was just to make sure he drew any heel heat that might have been CM Punk-bound though, so it served its purpose I guess.

EDIT - I don't remember anything being up with the picture, but I'm British, so I might get a different feed. Or I might just not have noticed on account of ageing eyesight. Either or really.

I also had the "strange" look to the show. FWIW, it all looked like Morrison's entrance video to me. I just assumed they messed up and left that "filter" on.

I also thought that some of the backstage stuff had a different look - almost movie-esque (but in a B-movie manner).

I'm all for Punk going heel on Hardy.

If they're going there, it's a slow boil so far. Given the love-in that was the main-event commentary, JR and Todd might feel betrayed by Punk if he goes full heel. Whatever the configuration, Punk is going to talk rings around Hardy in the promos. His work on the mic this episode was plentiful and solid. The seeds were sown for a heel turn given his comments about not being the popular guy.

I appreciate the new video look. My channel squished its feed each week and watching the show was no fun. It looks much better now.

The Canadian feed for the show looked the same as always, so whatever change was made was likely a change made by the TV stations in the US, rather than a deliberate attempt to change the look of the Smackdown product.

And is it just me, or is JR seeming to be about to turn heel? He was falling over himself rushing to talk about how Punk cashing in was smart and the right thing to do, and also mentioning at some points how Jericho was justified in his beliefs and actions and should have been #1 contender. And when Khali came out, didn't JR ask "What's so great about the Great Khali anyway"?

Yeah i caught those moments too. Hopefully it's more along the lines of JBL's and Jesse Ventura's 'common sense' justification of tactics. It gives a good slant to the commentary banter with Grisham and is far more enjoyable than Michael Cole's blind devotion to faces in spite of all logic.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it looked odd. It had that flimized look to it from my DC area station that I watch via DirecTV.

It also had a PAL to NTSC transfer feel from when I used to get bootlegs of British shows back in the early 90s.

I imagine there's a more than decent chance of Hardy and Khali following Maria onto the chopping block then.
