I was thinking about internet advertising. Reading things on The 7 reminds you about how big an annoyance pop-ups were. 1wrestling became so known for pop-ups that "1popup" became a well-known nickname for it.

Nowadays, all 3 browsers that I have on my computer (Firefox, Google Chrome, and of course Internet Explorer) block pop-ups out of the box. It appears that 1wrestling removed their pop-ups a couple years ago (judging by archive.org). Not that I'm mourning their loss, but are pop-ups dead, or is there some seedy corner of the internet that I don't visit where the pop-up arms race (discovering new ways to bypass the blockers) continues?

I still get a few pop-unders that Firefox lets through on a few sites. Snopes.com is the only one that comes to mind.

Same here. I still get the occasional pop-up when reading Comicsbulletin.com. But good point, what was once a huge annoyance has gone away for the most part. Now it's just banner ads up top and down the sides and buried next to the text . . .

And the flash ones that COVER the text until you close them or they eventually disappear. Yahoo and ESPN, I'm looking at you.

You think they're bad about it? You should see LordsOfPain.net. Some days, it seems like they're stacking several of them on top of each other for the sole purpose of annoying the crap out of you. It can take me a good minute or two to weed through them before I can start to read the headlines.

Reality News Online can be bad about pop-ups as well, but for a different reason. I hate that the minute you go onto there, you get hit with one, sometimes two ads with full, bursting sound that you can't mute and can only close after several very annoying seconds. But at least they open on their own page instead of on top of the links and text I want to read.

Other than those two, I haven't noticed too many pop-ups these days and usually when I do, it isn't too hard to get rid of them. It's just those two sites that give me a big headache withthem.

Those ads are history with the adblock extension for Facebook. It's the best add-on for Firefox, bar none.

The Weather Channel's Weather.com still has a lot of pop-up ads that get through Firefox. For such a widely-used site, it's strange that they're so heavy with the pop-ups and annoying "lightbox/click to close" ads. They also have the usual worked-in ads... like the rubber-legged woman dancing to "lower mortgage rates".

I think with the proliferation of Google's AdSense program, it's become much easier for Webmasters to generate advertising revenue. No need to force regular viewers to work through a pop-up. The Google Ads just sit to a side and aren't as obtrusive.

Well, apparently, google is great but it filters out tons and tons of searches to give us the best results but what if we really want to learn something new? May be this will be the answer. http://blog.wolfram.com/2009/03/05/wolframalpha-is-coming/
