On or about June 1st, we will take all lurkers, guests and web spiders out of "dialup" mode - this means they'll be subjected to the same post icons, dumbass signatures and CRAZY fonts and formatting that people logged in have had to endure for YEARS (unless they set themselves up in dialup mode as well).
This note is to let YOU know that if you are used to the dialup experience but maybe don't stay logged in, you will probably have to change your behaviour starting next week. It's ALSO a reminder to EVERYBODY that we do have a "Dial-up Mode" which strips all (most) posted images and delivers you the textual experience your father grew up with using his 300 baud modem to cheat on your mom with dirty, dirty ASCII. Me, I can't IMAGINE a world where I don't have six hourly snapshots of the past and present temperature in Minneapolis, so I'm always FULL GRAPHICS and FULL THROTTLE, BABY.
We'll be watching for any performance issues as well as taking the usual complaints by people who won't read this message and are wondering if something changed.
My crazy dream is that the experience of a richer page view may slow some of the drive-by visitors down just enough to think to themselves, "say, perhaps I too should register and become a part of this crazy The W Universe."
And then I can ban them.
THE W: MIXING SIGNALS IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER SINCE 2000
My only concern is with bandwidth for the spiders. We may want to see if we can toggle just them, long term. I should have mentioned this in the PM where I said I had no preference.

But I NEED to get some very tiny graphics into the Google Image Search!!
I can't remember the last time you banned someone! Get cracking, mister.
After a while I guess people get the point. There's a reason I'm still at this board after all these years...even though I'm never to be a WOTD, sniff.
