Results for tonight's Judgment Day pay-per-view:

Mickie James d. Beth Phoenix in a dark match.

Umaga d. CM Punk with the Samoan Spike. Say, you suppose they could bury him any further?

Christian d. Jack Swagger by pinfall with a handful of tights, retaining the ECW Championship.

John Morrison d. Shelton Benjamin by pinfall with his finishing maneuver, "Starship Pain". Charlie Haas distracted Morrison from ringside.

Rey Mysterio d. Chris Jericho with the 619 to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

Batista d. Randy Orton by disqualification, allowing Orton to retain the WWE Championship. Orton deliberately got himself disqualified, attacking the referee; then, Legacy came down to attack him 3-on-1 but Ric Flair came out to clear the ring on Batista's behalf. (Hey, I thought Flair was with ROH now?)

John Cena d. The Big Show with the Attitude Adjustment. No Miz interference.

Edge d. Jeff Hardy to retain the World Heavyweight Championship; Matt Hardy interfered and attacked Jeff, Cowboy Bob Orton-style with a cast on his arm.

I actually thought it was a let-down. Swagger vs. Christian and Shelton vs. Morrison were both below my expectations, Orton vs. Batista I didn't dig as much as others, Cena vs. Show was what we've come to expect from these two- Show walking around a lot and Cena overcoming the odds to win.

Whatever. This was a good way to bring back Umaga. Throw him in there with a top wrestler right away and give him a clean pin. How else do you suggest bringing back Umaga in a big way? Having him lose? Or having him beat nobody that means anything? It doesn't hurt Punk at all, especially since they've kept him feuding with Edge through this whole thing. Clearly Jeff and Matt aren't finished and I don't think Jericho and Mysterio are either. They can easily move CM Punk into the challenger position and in a few months nobody will care, or probably even remember that CM Punk lost to Umaga at the freakin Judgement Day PPV.

Great show for wrestling if you skip over the Big Show and Batista matches.

I have no problem with Punk losing to Umaga, although I think the "beat the guys in their hometown for heat" thing is dumb. He just never should've lost to Kane.

I thought Orton/Batista was good stuff despite the finish (is having the same ending as Orton/Cena at No Way Out 08 consistency for Randy or just laziness?). Cena/Show was the only blah match for me, even if Christian/Swack was not as good as their last two matches of length. With Matt getting reinvolved, I wonder if they'll go to Jeff/Christian vs. Edge/Matt in the TLC for Extreme Rules.

Absolutely. This was basically a very good Smackdown brand specific show with some rotten RAW filler. The Jericho vs. Rey match was pretty great, probably the match of the night. Edge and Jeff Hardy were right up there. Morrison was good but Shelton seemed to be off to me; like he wasn't quite all there. Still, the slow burn build to John Morrison as a main eventer continued. As for Punk, I continue to feel that life is much happier if you don't invest in him or his success in any way. He's a midcard hand who will occasionally be teased at the top, put on top for a lark, and then kicked right back down. Umaga Samoan Spiking him clean in his hometown was the finish I was expecting, and they delivered.

I hope Flair knows what he's doing if he comes back. I urge Naitch to Leave The Memories Alone, but he just will not listen.

Well put, sir. Yep, and I called that finish as well. Didn't think it was that offensive to be honest. Far worse was the meaningless loss to Kane on the last PPV.

How about that Miz promo? I bet he's the new darling of all White Sox fans. Not to mention he's 4-0 against Cena now, via forfeit victory over Alfonso Soriano. The crowd was definitely into the "Fizz"-Santino brawl.

Both Shelton-Morrison and Jericho-Mysterio were good but not great. Love to see Jericho playing a proper heel, going for the mask, whining to the ref, the whole works. I'm also intrigued by the Jericho v Edge battle about exactly who owns Smackdown.

Is it just me or do Orton and Batista have next-to-no chemistry?

Someone in the 411 comments sections mentioned that Mysterio looks like "Hornswoggle in a mask" and I couldn't help but have a little chuckle.

I find rather than not investing in Punk it is much easier simply not to invest in WWE. Last night the PPV was in my city, and I have to say I never once even considered going to see it. Mainly because I too figured the finish that happened was what was going to happen.

I must be misreading the results of the PPV though. I don't see any evidence of that MVP push that folks were confident was waiting right around the corner for the minute Shane McMahon finished his turn against Legacy.

Unlike CM Punk he didn't suffer the ignominy of losing a match.

Didn't Punk have an ugly losing streak before he cashed in his first MITB?

Last night's PPV for Judgement Day was like watching a 3 hour episode of Raw or Smackdown, or I shouldn't even say that because the 3 hour episodes of Raw or Smackdown are better than the PPV shown last night.

It seems there was no "give" to any of the matches and nothing stood out from the matches. The Batista and Orton match was pretty stale in my opinion. The Shelton/ Morrison match was pretty good but I think it could be better if they work feud a little more.

Flair couldn't possibly be setting up Reid Flair as the next member of Legacy right? Didn't he just get caught DWI with H on him?

Y'know, I've always been kinda amazed by the unadulterated love Vince has for Ric Flair. From letting him leave the WWF for WCW the first time with his dignity intact, to letting Cornett rant on-air about how Flair is being mistreated by WCW while Flair was still on TNT, to letting Flair jump from ROI back to the WWE without a moment's thought... I don't know. It seems as if Flair gets the kinda love from Vince that nobody else could ever hope to receive.

And I love Flair, so I'm not saying it's wholly unwarranted. I'm just saying that I couldn't imagine the WWE being as tolerant to any other wrestler, especially one who built his name primarily outside of the WWE. Not to Piper, not to Savage, not to anyone else.

I don't know if it's just a matter of professional respect... or if Vince is a lifelong Ric Flair fan.

It just seems a little strange, considering how vindictive Vince gets with some of his other former employees.

The one thing about the end to the Orton/Batista match is that the way they played it, Batista took a swing at Orton and Orton nailed the ref from behind at the same time so that the ref seemed to believe that he was being punched by Batista, playing up the fact that Orton has a habit of slugging refs for a DQ. Subtle piece of business that I appreciated.

With regards to Ric and ROH, obviously he has a clause with them that if the WWE thinks of something for him to do, he is gone. I suspect that for Ric that one of the attractions for him of being on ROH is that he is on TV in a non-threatening way to Vince, while simultaneously giving Vinve an incentive to think of things for Ric to do.

Like who? I can think of very few people who haven't gotten a second chance from Vince McMahon. I mean, there are some, but I can think of plenty more who have gotten that second (or third) chance.

Vince has given plenty of people second chances, but I cant think of anyone else who was "allowed" to leave and come back repeatedly without getting bashed/buried during their absence(s).

I read it as a testament to Flair's backstage popularity.

I read it as a testament to Vince not recognizing ROH as a threat of any kind. Come on, it's glorified Indy wrestling. Vince probably sees it as not much different than Flair working a date in Columbia, SC.
