TONIGHT: Well, WWE.com advertised John Cena vs. The Miz in a so-called “exhibition match” earlier this afternoon, then pulled all mention of it from the site. Perhaps they want it to be spontaneously announced tonight? And to open things, Legacy must explain why they did what they did to Shane McMahon last week. I can think of about 100 reasons. It’s also the go-home show for Judgment Day, so expect some hype for that. Plus, maybe a continuation (or, start) of a William Regal vs. MVP feud.

-WWE Open.

-RAW Open.

-Cable TV’s most-watched show was LIVE from Columbus, Ohio, with Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler at ringside. Some familiar tones started things off, Legacy’s Theme, as Lilian asked us to welcome Randy Orton (with Priceless at his side). Orton said the McMahon’s need to stop listening to the fans and start acting more like them. He said the fans deal with adversity all the time, but they don’t fight back- they sit there and take it. He said the fans stay beaten down because they’re all cowards. Then he proclaimed he put an end to the McMahon era last week. Sadly, I had to sit through a video package of what happened last week, even after I had to sit through it live. At least they kept it to Legacy attacking Shane. Orton reminded everyone that the company revolves around him, and that message goes to everyone in WWE, especially Batista. He said that earlier today, Vickie Guerrero announced that no physical contact could take place between him and Dave between now and Judgment Day. But it doesn’t mean they couldn’t talk- so Orton invited Batista to the ring for a chat. Batista’s music hit immediately, and he came down.

Orton told Batista that he would not win the WWE Championship on Sunday, and not ever. “You suck” chants for Orton, and Vince is no doubt rubbing his palms together in joy over that backstage. Randy offered Batista an opportunity to be a member of Legacy, something he has not done for anyone that’s not a second or third generation superstar. DiBiase said that getting kicked in the skull was the best thing that happened to his career, and told Batista not to let getting kicked in the head by Orton affect his decision. Orton reminded Batista of their time in Evolution, and said Triple H held them back. He said they could become bigger than the Four Horsemen, bigger than DX, even bigger than Evolution. I think they needed to switch Evolution and Four Horsemen there. Orton talked about Arn Anderson being Ric Flair’s enforcer. He gave Batista the chance to be his enforcer.

Batista finally spoke, saying that it seems like a great opportunity and that everything Orton said made perfect sense. Only one problem- he doesn’t like Orton. In fact, he loathes Orton. He said he’d never be Orton’s backup. He said he’s not here to help Orton; he’s here to hurt him. Orton angrily told Batista he just made the biggest mistake of his life and he’d drop Batista right now if it weren’t for Vickie Guerrero’s ruling. Batista said he’s tired of Vickie and he’s tired as hell of waiting (well, he stumbled over that part). He said he didn’t think Vickie would call off the main event, leaving nothing in the way of him destroying Orton tonight.

Of course, Vickie Guerrero (and her lap-dog Chavo) interrupted. She was upset that she was called predictable and she waived the no physical contact rule (that she just put in place) for tonight. She said she was fine with the two tearing each other up tonight, but no matter the condition of either one, the title match will take place Sunday. Vickie made Batista vs. DiBiase & Rhodes for later on. If Legacy wins, they will have a 3-on-1 handi-cap match. If Batista wins, then Judgment Day comes early, and he will face Orton one-on-one (presumably tonight). The handi-cap match is next!

[Commercial Break]

(1) Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes vs. Batista- Handicap Match
Match was JIP after break, with Batista taking the offense to DiBiase, then Rhodes. Standing suplex on Rhodes. A distraction by DiBiase provided Rhodes the opportunity to slip out of a slam and go after the big man’s leg. DiBiase came in and worked over the left leg. Couple quick tags by the heels as they took apart Big Dave. He tried to fight out of the corner though and hit a back body-drop on Rhodes, then kicked DiBiase to the floor. Then he sent Rhodes out on the opposite side. Rhodes threw a chair into the ring, and Batista got to it and swung at Rhodes. The ref saw this, and called for the bell.

Winners: DiBiase & Rhodes, by DQ, 4:03 shown. I’d like to see some consistency on whether the guy gets DQ’d for bringing the chair in the ring OR using it, not back-and-forth. And if Shane McMahon could fight off Legacy for so long, Batista should have no problem doing it, right?

[Commercial Break]

-Maryse was in the ring, with a mic. She spoke French at first, to get some cheap heat. She said if she wasn’t Maryse, she’d want to be. Okay then. And we’ve got a match!

(2) Maryse & Jillian Hall vs. Mickie James & Kelly Kelly
Jillian was apparently in the ring with Maryse while she did the interview. “And her tag team......partner, Kelly Kelly” was how Lilian introduced Kelly. Long pause after “team.” Kelly and Jillian did some bad wrestling and a distraction by Maryse allowed Jillian to get a nice clothesline on Kelly. Double-team hair toss by the heels. Maryse applied her unique chin-lock. Kelly tried to elbow her way out then make a tag, but Maryse grabbed her hair and put her back down. She took a cheap shot at Mickie on the apron. Kelly kicked Maryse away and Mickie came in to add some life to this match. Hurricanrana on the Divas Champion. Mickie hit a Thesz Press off the top into a pin, but Jillian broke it up. Kelly took care of her. Maryse went for her patented DDT but Mickie held onto the rope. Jumping DDT on Maryse for three.

Winners: Mickie & Kelly, at 3:42. Got better when Mickie came in, but that’s not saying much.

-Smilin’ Josh Mathews was backstage with Randy Orton. Orton started talking but DiBiase immediately interrupted, saying Cody is gone. Orton took DiBiase off to the side and when the camera tried to horn in on the convo, Orton smacked it away. He asked where Batista was, then they ran off. Intrigue!

[Commercial Break]

-Cole and Lawler talked on camera about the John Cena vs. Big Show feud. They showed footage of what happened at Backlash as well as last Monday.

-Chavo, backstage, complimented Vickie on handling the Big Show situation. They mentioned how Cena is not cleared to compete at Judgment Day. Chavo suggested that Cena compete in an “exhibition” match tonight, to prove he’s not milking his injury. He said Cena should fight until Vickie is satisfied with his condition. She made the match against The Miz. Hey, I was right! Chavo then wished Vickie a happy Mother’s Day.

-Cole and King were in the ring and Cole plugged Cena being in action tonight. They ran threw the Judgment Day card. Good change-of-pace to have this done in the ring, and good for the live crowd to be able to hear them talking.

-Backstage, Orton and DiBiase were in search of Rhodes. Orton sent DiBiase down a hallway and Orton kept walking. He finally came upon Rhodes, who said he was talking to someone. Orton gave Rhodes a scolding and said they need to stick together. A medic ran past them and they came upon the prone body of DiBiase, with wrestlers (and the Bella Twins) standing around him.

[Commercial Break]

-A “Mr. Kennedy Returns” vignette aired.

(3) Carlito vs. The Brian Kendrick
Carlito once again sent Primo to the back before he could make it down the entranceway. Kendrick!! This is a return match from last week. Huge dropkick on Kendrick, who was in mid-air when Carlito hit it. Double-stomp to the back by Kendrick, followed by a choke with the boot. Running forearm on Carlito in the corner. Off the second rope, Kendrick was met with a boot to the gut, then a knee-lift. Legdrop by Carlito for two. Carlito tried a springboard, by Kendrick pulled him down. Sliced Bread #2 was dodged, but Carlito was thrown into the ring-post shoulder-first. He rolled Carlito up for the win.

Winner: Kendrick, at 1:44. YES!!

-Kendrick got the mic and said that when he finds a partner, he’s going to be one-half of THE tag team champions. Well, at least he’s in a program, but it’s disappointing that they’re putting him back in a tag team.

-Cena’s special exhibition match will be next.

[Commercial Break]

-A reminder that Batista takes on Legacy tonight.

-Big Show came out. He sat at ringside for the following match.

(4) John Cena vs. The Miz- Exhibition Match
By the sounds of it, there’s no pinfalls or submissions in this one, it’s over when Vickie says it’s over. Cena came out sans most of his gyrations. Miz came out, mic in hand. He said getting thrown through a search-light is nothing compared to what he’ll do tonight. Cena kept staring at Show so Miz shouted for Cena to look at him. Miz told Cena that he’s picked on him about his movies, but his rap album sucked too. Cena didn’t seem to be paying attention.

There was no referee and no bell to start things, so I’ll start the time at first contact. Cena took Miz down, all while keeping his eye on Big Show. Another headlock take-down. Back suplex by Miz, then a normal one. And another. He stomped a mudhole in Cena in the corner. Corner clothesline sent the former WWE Champ to the mat. Miz yelled at Cena to pay attention to him, not Show. Another corner clothesline attempt, but Cena got out of the way. He started hitting his shoulderblocks and suplex that set up the “you can’t see me.” Five-knuckle shuffle. He set up for the Attitude Adjustment, but Vickie came on the Titan-Tron and stopped the match. She said it’s obvious he has no chance against Big Show. Cena turned around, right into a Miz DDT. Miz stood over Cena and blew snot on him, then left.

Match Time: 2:54. They made Miz look good, which was awesome. Big Show smiled, then left ringside.

-Backstage, Rhodes told Orton that they have to get to him before he gets to them. Orton told Rhodes he needs to prove himself: Find Batista and take him out. Rhodes looked hesitant, then confident. He was sent away to do the deed.

[Commercial]

-Chavo told Vickie that the exhibition match would work out and Vickie said great minds think alike. Santina walked in and Vickie asked if it was true that Santina called her swine-like last week. Doesn’t she watch her own show? She said it was her twin sister Santino. Chavo had enough and tried to de-frock Santina, but she said she’s not that kind of girl. Vickie called in Beth and Rosa. She told Rosa to give him a good-luck kiss before her match next. Rosa kissed him on the cheek and Santina grabbed her and made out with her. Everybody thought that was proof it was Santino, but Santina claimed to be a lesbian. “I prefer the company of the womens.” She said she doesn’t prefer the company of pigs though. Then she made pig-sounds at Vickie and slapped Rosa on her way out. King and Cole did their annoying overly fake laughs.

-Backstage, Rhodes had a long metal pipe in his hand and was in search of Batista. A noise inside a room made him think he was in there, but when he opened the door, Hornswoggle came out, screaming. From behind, Batista took Cody and threw him into a bunch of lockers, then into the room and shut the door, with the camera on the outside.

[Commercial Break]

-Cole and Lawler surmised that Batista was in on the assault on DiBiase earlier, because of what we just saw with him attacking Rhodes.

(5) Beth Phoenix vs. Santina
They’ve added some Italian-sounding music to Billy and Chuck’s theme for Santina. I think referee John Cone’s sideburns get longer every week. “Santina” chants from the crowd. If Santina is a diva, how come she hasn’t gotten implants yet? She could use them. Beth started the match off with shoulders to the gut. Irish whip but Santina dodged a charge and was clotheslined over the top rope. Beth lifted Santina off the apron and pressed her over her head. Impressive. Santina tried an abdominal stretch, but the two do-see-doed and Beth applied one instead. Then a full-nelson. Santina screamed in pain. She tried to power out, but couldn’t, as Lawler kept peppering Cole about whether or not he would date Santina. Beth pounded away with right hands on Santina. She told him he embarrassed her for two months. Inside cradle by Santina for the win.

Winner: Santina, at 2:40.

After the match, Santina danced with the ref, named by Michael Cole, so he’s probably getting yelled at in his headset. Santina danced after the match.

-Still to come, a 3-on-1 handicap match. Or is it?

[Commercial Break]

-Cena was walking backstage, when Mathews came up to him and asked how Cena would even compete at Judgment Day. Cena said he’s hurting and he’s been going through some hard times, but that doesn’t make him different than anyone else. Sounds like he’s stealing a bit from Dusty Rhodes’ “Hard Times” promo. He said he’ll have to adapt and overcome come this Sunday. He said he’s not going to Judgment Day to compete, but to win. Mathews tried to wrap it up by saying Cena and Show would compete at JD, but Cena interrupted and said Mathews wasn’t listening- he’s going to WIN.

-MVP came out. It’s the first episode of the VIP Lounge on Monday Night Raw. MVP took issue with William Regal interfering in his match last week, so he told Regal to get his swagger on and to put his dress on, because it’s ladies’ night in the Lounge. Regal came out (not in a dress), and said he was GM and King of the Ring one year ago. He said he was then unjustly removed from his position, paid his dues as an in-ring competitor, and waited his chance for his turn again. Then he said MVP and all the other draft picks came on the show, ignored his tenure, and tried to hop above him in the pecking order. MVP called Regal miserable. He said he wasn’t waiting for his turn, he’s the US Champ. Regal interrupted and said MVP perfectly embodies the USA- he’s arrogant, misguided and despised by everyone else in the world (“USA” chant there, by the way). Regal took off his robe to fight, but then Matt Hardy’s music hit. Interesting.

Matt said he wanted to air his grievances, since everyone else was too. He said he shouldn’t be competing as he has the last two weeks, and said his formal complaints to the Board have been ignored. He wanted his loss to Kofi Kingston erased from the books. Hardy told Regal to wait his turn because there is no one who has beaten MVP more than he has, and he deserves to be the first person to get a shot at the US Title. He and Regal argued, so Kofi Kingston came out and attacked Hardy, knocking him out of the ring. Chavo Guerrero came out and said Vickie has ordered the ring be cleared right now, because Regal and Matt will tag up against MVP and Kofi, with the match beginning immediately. MVP held court in the ring as the show went to break.

[Commercial Break]

(6) MVP & Kofi Kingston vs. William Regal & Matt Hardy
Match was joined in progress out of break. MVP and Kofi both got the best of Regal while they were in there. All four men came in there but it quickly went back down to two. Hardy tagged in and his attire consisted of jeans and white sneakers. “Regal Sucks” chant while Matt was in there. Hmm.... Then a Kofi chant broke out as Matt locked him in an abdominal stretch. Then a “Hardy Sucks” chant while Regal was in! Weird! Kofi fought back against Regal, but Regal threw Kofi on his back for two. MVP finally made the hot tag and unloaded on Regal. “Ballin!” elbowdrop connected, but Hardy broke up the pinfall. Kofi kicked Hardy in the hand, then Regal sent Kofi out over the top. Matt was shown going to the back and MVP finished off Regal with the Playmaker.

Winners: MVP & Kingston, at 6:27. Fine match.

-Orton was walking backstage, alone, heading to the ring for his match with Batista.

[Commercial Break]

-Randy Orton came out for the match, alone. Orton said it is pointless for them to fight tonight, so he’s going to leave the ring....then Batista’s music hit.

(7) Randy Orton vs. Batista
Orton went for an RKO, but didn’t connect. Clothesline by Batista, and Orton tried to leave the ring. He was shoved back in, and Batista hit a spinebuster, then another. He got a chair and brought it into the ring (no DQ), then used it on Orton (DQ). Come on, can we get some consistency in calls within the SAME show?

Winner: Orton, by DQ, at :56.

Batista hit Orton in the legs with the chair several times, then brought the steel setps into the squared circle. Rhodes came out before Batista could use the steps, but he got Batista Bombed. Then Ted DiBiase came out from behind. Batista fought off him and Orton, got Orton in position for a Batista Bomb, but DiBiase attacked. Orton squirmed out of the ring as DiBiase got speared. Batista threw the steps up the aisle at Orton, and Randy was able to get out of the way. They showed replays of what just happened. Batista, in the ring, stared and yelled at Orton, in the aisle, as the show faded out.

That was an abysmal RAW. Lethargic, sloppy, and hard to sit through.

Apparently, there isn't a single heel on RAW, male or female, who isn't a gigantic, incompetent pussy. Check that, The Brian Kendrick had his first good week since debuting. Miz is still a pussy because Cena isn't 100% according to storyline. "I'm The Miz and I'm awesome!" Yeah, that's a catchphrase that'll sell a million T-shirts.

Since when can Batista get disqualified for swinging a chair and NOT connecting?

PG rating = backstage beatdowns are now held off camera or behind closed doors. Mustn't show too much violence to the children.

I can't believe how fast they drove the Santina joke into the ground.

Lillian, for God's sake, you've had this job for ten years - MVP wears a championship belt so when he comes to the ring, announce him as the United States Champion.

Orton suddenly stopped selling his injured ankle for the failed RKO attempt and then went back to selling it before the stairs flew at him.

Bite your tongue! Tonight's show got over how much of a BRILLIANT, INTELLECTUAL, THINKING MAN'S MASTERMIND Batista is. PLUS they made sure that I would want to PAY AMERICAN DOLLARS to see Batista FINISH THE JOB at Judgment Day (only on pay per view this Sunday)! A MILLION BILLION STARS.

Regal drew a lot of heat from the crowd tonight. Might be time to make him the #2 heel on Raw. And his ring music is awesome.

Orton did foul up tonight, sold the ankle injury, then must have forgotten to sell it for a few minutes, then suddenly remembered. Must have a real strong ankle also, Batista nailed it about six times and it didn't break.

They really need to stop making DiBase and Rhodes to be pussies. Would two of the four horsemen ever be presented as being this weak?

How can they leave MVP out of the upcoming PPV?

And was it me or does Matt Hardy keep slightly changing his story on his broken finger? I thought he said it was broken in 2 places last week, this week it was 3 places.

Better than last week and the crowd as a good one this week, not dead like the past 2.

Comparable to dying WCW. Just awful.

As ECW and SD continue to steadily improve I just wonder if it will ever set in to this company that the RAW formula is outdated, tired and in need of a serious overhaul. Maybe it will have to get to the point of fans chanting "We want SMACKDOWN" during RAW...

Hey, at least the crowd wasn't dead like the last couple of weeks.

I thought the Cena-kills-Miz-in-2-minutes burial would happen tonight, but they did just enough things different from the formula, and it worked for me. Miz getting his finisher at the end was a good touch, something they missed out on last week.

I think the idea is to present Legacy as a one-man show. I know WWE is not always the smartest when it comes to creating heat for talent, but there's no way they would have a sustained policy of making DiBiase and Rhodes look like shit. By the way, whatever happened to the plans of Priceless winning the Unified Tag Gold? They had one match on SD, and then nothing. And now it seems the Colons are moving onto a feud with THE Brian Kendrick and a partner of his choice while Priceless are getting their asses handed to them on a weekly basis by some combination of Shane, Batista, and HHH.

After tonight, I've become certain that my feelings about Orton are correct. I wrote some time ago here that maybe I just didn't get "it" with Orton, and I couldn't see what it was that made some people go ga-ga over him. But I see now that he's just plain boring, and the new slithery deliberation is not helping his cause any. His in-ring work is nothing to speak of, his promo work is nothing to speak of, and if he was getting heat for being a badass, I'm sure the current direction of booking in the E will soon take care of that.

Morale of today's main event segment: Orton's Ankle >> Shane's Ankle.

It probably fits in with his character, trying to extend the injury and milk the most mileage out of it.

Animal / The Animal comparisons... too easy... must resist.

But seriously Shane McMahon is far worse than Sid Vicious main eventing.

Even though it is a slap to the women's division, the Santino/Santina gimmick is the best thing going on Raw. They are at least doing some good things with Miz, Kendrick and to some extent MVP. The problem with the show is that Orton's storyline has reached its expiration date. It is nice that him and Batista are finally fueding after all these years, but the writing is on the wall for this match and any other title matches till either HHHH comes back or Cena remembers he is the top dog.

And Matt Hardy, too, which is nice because I thought that all these guys were more or less going to get the shaft on RAW.

I'll go ahead and say something nice about the show last night - I was happy to see a face get the better of the heels for once. Admittedly, Randy Orton's miraculous recovery, and equally miraculous remission were pretty jarring, but it was nice, after weeks and weeks on RAW (and basically any time anything ever happens in TNA), I enjoyed seeing a heel get some comeuppance. Watching faces get crippled and made fools of as a regular occurrence gets really depressing after a while.

I felt that they were punishing Cole and Lawler last night. I know they always have to do the fake laughing, but the camera isn't usually posed right on them when they do it. Then they had to actually get in the ring and do the PPV listing of matches, which was jarring to see.

The only thing I really liked about Raw-- The "I'm On A Boat" sign.

He got a chair and brought it into the ring (no DQ), then used it on Orton (DQ). Come on, can we get some consistency in calls within the SAME show?

According to your recap, Batista used a chair twice and got disqualified for using a chair twice. I don't see the inconsistency.
