I've signed us up as part of Quantcast's demographic thingamajig. It involved adding some more Javascript to our layout page. We will update the Privacy Policy shortly to reflect this, but I'm letting you know here as well.
If you're curious, you can see what they already think of us WITHOUT collecting any voluntary data from us by clicking over to http://www.quantcast.com/the-w.com - and then ask yourself: doesn't this make us look desirable to you as an advertiser? Just what do they mean when they say we have an inordinately disproportionate number of visitors whose race is "Other?" Where are all these rich people who are visiting here and why haven't I gotten any grants from them? AND FINALLY, if we're REALLY attracting visitors at the rate of 60% male to 40% female, how the bloody heck can we account for (presumed) men making 95% of the posts here?
From reading thru the explanation on the site (which takes about four pages to actually start explaining), it sounds as though they're looking at traffic that comes from sites they already track and extrapolating from there.
So let's see what Quantcast has discovered so far. They say 4% of visitors are addicts (people who visit more than 30 times a month), which account for 53% of all visits. If I've got the numbers right, that means about 100 people per week who account for 30K page views per week, which is 304 per person per week. I imagine that if a person views the site at work, and at home, that counts as two people. They can't know that two IP addresses are the same person, can they?
Another 44% of the visitors are regulars, who visit between 1 and 30 times in a month, and are responsible for 38% of visits.
Finally, 52% of visitors are passers-by, who have only visited once in the month and therefore account for only 9% of visits. Presumably this is people brought in from outside links.
It currently ranks as the 237,410th internet site according to Quantcast, between marinesolutionsinc.com and msiloans.biz.
Demographic information isn't yet available, and I'll assume that the numbers they have hidden behind the curtain aren't the actual numbers for this site. 61% female? Not unless a lot of people are ying.
I think it takes a month of measuring before they have those "hidden" ones available.
I'm too lazy to compare and contrast, but if things are working right, their addicts+regulars total is right in line with whatever the front page says our "active" user total is (which we define as having used their login at least once in the last 30 days, I think)
You can also see that nice spike in visits from that day when The Goon plugged us on the Calgary Flames fan board. I should send him a present!
