Absolutely. I'm stunned they were able to catch him/he was dumb enough to allow himself to get caught.

Well crap, now I have to go recut my scoreboard for the Cardinals pregame.

Given what his camp is saying I wonder if it'll be reduced...or if MLB will be afraid to show preferential treatment to a star.

I am so happy I read this story apparently before everyone else on the stock market game where I have Manny. Had Manny! Crash hasn't hit yet.

FanGraphs was just making the case that the NL West was over because the Dodgers had gotten a big lead with no signs of slowing down, and everyone else in that division would have to go from scuffling to very good to catch up. The assumption there was the Dodgers would play no worse than 500 ball the rest of the way. I still think they have a decent enough team where they should be able to do that, but the margin is going to be much thinner for the time being and it's really going to test that premise.

At least Juan Pierre gets to play? That's good for Juan Pierre only. Sliiiiight drop off in slugging.

I hope they've already sent the grief counselor to Bill Simmons house.

I want to apologize to [Dodgers owner Frank] McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, [manager Joe] Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I'm sorry about this whole situation.

As a Dodger fan, I was this close to hara-kiri after hearing the news, but then I remembered we still have Orlando Hudson and Andre Ethier. We should be OK for 50 games. (And this Xavier Paul kid we called up to replace Manny on the roster is supposedly pretty good, too.)

Manny's either an idiot for believing the doctor or a longtime cheat who finally got caught. It's easier for me to believe the former.

Gammons says it's not a steroid, so I'll take the guy's word for it. Going down 50 games is a major blow, though.

Great. Have my first freeway series tickets in years, the Angels are the walking wounded, and now Manny's out for that game (and many more). What an exciting game THAT should be.

EDIT: Hmm...that was an unfortunate choice of words. Thanks, Leroy?

Yahoo Sports is saying it's a female fertility drug, gonadotropin.

Two sources said Ramirez tested positive for a gonadotropin. Major League baseball’s list of banned substances includes the gonadotropins LH and HCG, which are most commonly used by women as fertility drugs. They also can be used to trigger testosterone production. Testosterone is depleted by steroid use, which can cause sexual dysfunction.

I wonder if I should try to unload Andre Ethier from my fantasy team from work. He's good, but with Manny batting in front of him, he's putting up really great numbers. He's not going to be able to do as well with Pierre.

Frankly, the offense of the Dodgers will go down slightly, but I wouldn't worry. It's the NL West; it's not like they are facing any actual major league teams in that division. Oh, and the folks in Beantown must be smiling from ear to ear, between this and Yankees sucking it hard against the BoSox.

Edit: WOW. Listening to Bill Plaschike on ESPN right now and the way he's reacting, you think Manny didn't just cheat, he unleashed a terroist attack upon LA. I'm not defending Manny, but you're the one that wanted him so badly in the first place knowing his flaws (maybe not the roids stuff, but plenty of other issues with him) and now you can't wait to drive him out of town? A little overboard, I think.

At least he can use his time off to work on making a baby?

I don't doubt that Plaschike's turning up the Hyperbole Meter to 11, but let's look at it from this perspective.

This was the first time in a long time that Los Angeles was seriously interested in baseball. It was starting to turn back into Dodger Town. The team invested a lot to try and play into this. There are Manny billboards EVERYWHERE. They just started selling field box packages in the "Mannywood" section. The team and the city invested millions of dollars to pimp out Manny Ramirez. And the positive test essentially just put egg on everyone's faces. The billboards are suddenly a glaring embarrassment. The Mannywood marketing plan is suddenly a flop (for the next 50 games, anyway). And worse, the revival of interest in L.A. baseball is threatened.

I'm not saying Plaschike shouldn't be overreacting, but it's understandable. This will blow over. The Dodgers are still a favorite to win the World Series once Manny gets back. The fans will forget about this, the same way Yankee fans forgot about Giambi. But for RIGHT NOW, this doesn't look good at all.

EDIT: The floodgates should be open now. If A-Rod escapes this season without a 50 game suspension, I will SO grab my broom for a round of Shenanigans.

Keep him. There's no way in hell Pierre bats lower than 8th.

Well I've never like Plaschke so I don't want to defend him too much but the reason they wanted Manny was because they wanted him to actually play. None of his antics in Boston made him miss one third of the season so when Los Angeles decided to put up with his antics this was not expected.

I don't think the Los Angeles Dodgers are in trouble of losing the National League West, but you never know what taking a player like Manny Ramirez out of the lineup can do. And if they do lose the the division I'm sure there will be plenty of people to blame, but it will probably go to Manny Ramirez. If he's out for 50 games then almost any amount of games they lose by they can probably argue, "well if we had Manny for FIFTY more games it would be different."

So I can see how people in Los Angeles would be upset. Worst case scenario Manny is a cheater, best case scenario he's only the biggest dumbass in baseball.

I love how a lot of the initial reaction on a lot of the stuff read so far want a one and done rule in baseball. I'd rather see a one and your team can opt out of it's contract.

When he went into Operation Shutdown Mode in August '06 at the conclusion of the Yankees 5 game sweep of the Red Sox, that was in the 35-40 game range, so it was close. Manny just gets to take the summer vacation he longs to take early this year.
I'll go with the sexual performance issue excuse on this, just because the stuff he is on for baseball performance they can't catch on the test. Unless Manny thought that because he wasn't under contract in the off-season meant he could take anything.
