Hmmm...
Saw it in the theater today.
If I look at it with a not-wolverine-origins-fanboy point of view I thought it was fun.

But having read (and enjoyed) lots of Wolverine's background and not seeing that return in the movie, or worse..being changed made me growl a few times.
Which made the friend I went with enjoy himself even more.

But I did enjoy myself.
Special effects were decent. Wolverine does go brutal 2-3 times. Some fun comedy bits too.

And now for the Spoiler stuff

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
I liked how the opening scene was exactly like the Origin comic book, though very condensed. Bone claws! Nice! I would have loved it if they had done more with time period between 1845 and 1970/80. Wade Wilson is cool. But they fucked up Deadpool. Some forshadowing to the x1/2/3 is nicely done. The Professor X cameo is cool. But wtf? I hope he was CG. If not, Patrick Stewart looks terrible!

Nope. Just as annoying as ever.

This was basically "Spot The Mutant" with bad effects. Not very good.

It wasn't too bad. Gambit even had the red eyes, so I thought they did a good job with him. My wife and friend noticed that the cast list had Ryan Reynolds as Wade and someone as Weapon XI. I expect that they will do the Deadpool movie saying Weapon XI was a clone of Wade. I thought this was a nice set-up if they wanted to do X-Men 4 with characters returning, but with First Class and maybe Magneto coming out that will probably wait. I will say this was a nice prequel and certain things I didn't expect to connect was connected. Don't believe too much of the hate on this film.

I wish we didn't. About half of my theater stayed for it and about half of them were PISSED they waited for that.

I liked it for the continuity, but I understand their reaction.

Deadpool was probably the most perfectly cast role in the film, sadly he was the most poorly handled in the film. So much was missed with his character it hurt me inside. Even though Gambit is my all time favorite mutant I had way less complaints about his portrayal than Wade Wilson's.

Ryan Reynolds was great for the short time he was the "Merc with a Mouth". WHY DIDN'T YOU BREAK THE FOURTH WALL DAMMIT!

*MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD*
In general i thought this was pretty bad. The first half of the movie was actually pretty good to great up until about the death of Silverfox and Logan getting his adamantium put in. We get some nice cameos from the Blob and surprisingly Agent Zero and Deadpool. After that it's all downhill though.

Youd think that in a movie about Wolverine youd want to make his cgi claws look as real as possible. Not the case. The scene in front of the mirror was so bad that I thought it was a scene out of Roger Rabbit and he had 'toon' claws. Beyond that they deviated significantly from any major Wolverine storylines and it made for a clusterfuck of a second half. Silverfox is undead (yes I know this happened in the comics but it was done even worse here) and is the older sister of a teen Emma Frost..uh what? Then we get Deadpool reborn as an ugly version of the mimic and Kano from MK. Even has katana blades that come out of the top of his hands and Stryker TYPES ONE WORD COMMANDS to control him. I shit you not. Of course then they fight on top of the edge of a nuclear reactor for absolutely no reason and we discover Weapon XI (Deadpool) also has optic blasts which contiue to fire even after he's decapitated. Finally in a totally tacked on moment, Wolverine loses his memories via two adamantium bullets to the cranium. Yes you read that right. Totally campy and painful to watch in general. Oh and we get a CG proffesor x too. They were doing great sticking to plots from the comic series, but once they stopped doing that they ended up in Brett Ratner territory.

I will say this though, Jackman is a very believable Wolverine in terms of looks and speech and body language. I was pleasantly surprised by that. Otherwise, I'm going thumbs down.

Sabretooth was the most fascinating character in the movie. I only say that because Ryan Reynolds was not onscreen enough for it to be Wade Wilson, which was the only thing to get a good reaction from the theatre I was in. Liev Schrieber delivered the goods the whole movie long. On that note, the casting was done very, very well IMO.

Without getting too spoilerific, the whole movie can be summed up as Wolverine fights somebody, Stryker does something underhanded, repeat. The plot was more swervy than an episode of a soap opera written by Vince Russo, but if you're expecting Oscar nominated writing with this you're doing something wrong to begin with.

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Getting spoilerific, appearantly the elderly couple that totally made me think of the Kents were the Hudsons, according to IMDB, and given how they referenced their son so often I think it's a great wink and a nod to Alpha Flight. If that's included in the Wolverine: Origins comics, I wouldn't know, I didn't read them. Also, I got the weird feeling they smooshed Silverfox with the Black Queen for some reason. The ending was rather stupid, and more telegraphed/crammed together than the end of Star Wars episode III.

I was thinking more of Baraka than Kano, because of the sword arms (how would he bend his arms when they were retracted?).

And, yeah, his claws looked obviously fake in that bathroom scene. So bad we had a few giggles before the comedy bit.

Depending on which after credits sequence you got, he did. Doesn't really do anything to salvage the character tho.

Even setting aside my comic nerd complaints, I still thought it was a terrible movie with a great cast, half of whom shouldn't have been hired since one of the biggest flaws was the "throw a new mutant onscreen every 10 minutes" approach to the material.

Wait. There are different "post credit" scenes?

We got Logan having a drink "to remember"
The setting was nice.

Yeah, one of the ways they're trying to salvage things from the leak is by having multiple post credits scenes as "new footage". There are three, I guess the idea is to make you keep going to the movie until you get to see all three (boy do they not get how the internet works):

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
1. Logan drinking at the bar in Japan.
2. Stryker walking on ruined feet until he gets stopped and arrested by Army guards.
3. Deadpool's blades retracting into his arm, and his arm feeling around until it finds his head, which opens it's eyes and shushes the audience.

1 & 2 were in the leaked version to begin with, so I don't know who they're kidding with this "new footage" stuff. You can see #3 here:

The post-credit bar sequence at least gives me hope for an adaptation of the Claremont/Miller mini in Japan.

This movie fails, both as a comic adaptation and as a film. There were more than enough liberties taken with the comics to enrage the Wolverine enthusiast and there were just enough cheesy explosions and special effects to turn off the film enthusiast.

Gambit was the best part of the movie and, had he kept the accent through the whole movie, would have been perfect. Feels like he gave up on the accent halfway through, though.

More than enough has been said about how they completely butchered Deadpool. It's depressing, but also incredibly baffling, considering they actually wanted to sell the idea of a Deadpool spin-off with this movie. That idea's likely dead in the water, at least for a good long while.

I can't be the only one who got an Albert Brooks vibe (circa "The Simpsons Movie") out of Stryker. "I can give you the tools to defeat him. Ever try to defeat someone without tools? It doesn't work, it hurts." I couldn't take the guy seriously.

I thought the Wolverine movie was alright. It went off considerably from the origins. People have to keep in mind that if the movies actually went really close to the origins, the movies would be ridiculously long and would have to be split up.

However, I thought the movie was missing the "it" factor and nothing really grabbed me in throughout the movie. I guess what kind of disappoints me is it is really difficult to compare this movie to the 3 other X-Men movies because the Wolverine movie does contradict with the few other X Men movies.

My overall grade is a C+ for the movie.
