Dark Match: Kofi Kingston defeated Dolph Ziggler.

Christian defeated Jack Swagger to become the new ECW Champion, in what WWE is calling "Christian's first World Title". Heh. (As a matter of fact this is his third reign with a PWI-recognized World Heavyweight Title; he's a two-time former NWA World Heavyweight Champion).

Chris Jericho defeated Ricky Steamboat by submission with the Walls of Jericho.

Kane defeated CM Punk by pinfall with the chokeslam.

Jeff Hardy defeated Matt Hardy in the I-Quit match, securing him to a table and going up to the top of a ladder, threatening to legdrop him through it unless he quit. Matt surrendered; Jeff did it anyway.

Santina Marella defeated Beth Phoenix. Next.

The Legacy defeated HHH/Batista/Shane (with Orton pinning Triple H after the Punt). Randy Orton is the new WWE Champion. This is Orton's fourth world championship reign; he's a three-time WWE Champion and one-time World Heavyweight Champion. Randy Orton becomes the 12th person to win the WWE Championship three times. (The record is Triple H's 8).

Edge defeated John Cena in the Last Man Standing match after The Big Show chokeslammed him through an arena spotlight. Ouch. Edge is the new World Heavyweight Champion. This is Edge's ninth world championship reign; he's a four-time WWE Champion and five-time World Heavyweight Champion. (He and Triple H are now tied for the highest number of reigns with the latter).

So, all three World Titles changed hands.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Oops, The Big Show did the chokeslamming, not Edge himself. Thought that was a bit weird.

One small correction. I didn't watch the show but read results elsewhere. Wasn't it The Big Show who interfered and chokeslammed Cena through the spotlight, not Edge?

Right-o, just caught that myself as I reviewed the individual match recaps on WWE.com. Corrected.

I thought it was a really good show. Both title matches were better than the ones at Wrestlemania, and Edge-Cena was their usual super match. Plus Christian/Swagger was awesome, plus Christian won the most prestigious world title of his career, plus CHRISTIAN AND EDGE TALKED.

I thought that was the most sad Steamboat has looked, though. He was best in the tag match on Raw when he could sell for a tag and take rests.

In the end, Jeff and Matt as a feud never got over like it should have and the matches were all disappointing. No one wants to see them fight each other, but that's nothing they shouldn't have known before they went ahead with it.

I have no idea how he does it, but CM Punk is literally the only guy who's had good matches with both Kane and JBL over the last year and a half.

I've been wondering for some time now if anybody in the WWE has even noticed how many world championships Edge has racked up. The conspiracy is that they are trying to get Triple H to pass Flair but if they aren't careful Edge will be in position to pass Triple H when he finally retires. Even if he never catches Triple H's final number he's in pretty good position to pass Flair unless he goes on a Federer-like slump.

I hope that these new title reigns actually last a little while. I know there's the chance of Punk cashing in at some point, but both World Titles have changed hands seemingly every PPV since Punk and HHH lost their titles last fall.

Good point about the rapid exchanging of World Titles. Let's recap the WWE and World Title matches on PPV (and the non-PPV title changes) since SummerSlam last year:

SummerSlam '08

World Title: CM Punk retains v. JBL
WWE Title: Triple H retains v. The Great Khali

Unforgiven '08

World Title: Chris Jericho wins in Championship Scramble (in which champion CM Punk was not a part) [1st title change since SS]
WWE Title: Triple H retains in Championship Scramble

No Mercy '08

World Title: Chris Jericho retains v. Shawn Michaels
WWE Title: Triple H retains v. Jeff Hardy

Cyber Sunday '08

World Title: Batista wins v. Chris Jericho [2nd]
WWE Title: Triple H retains v. Jeff Hardy

RAW, eight days post-Cyber Sunday

World Title: Chris Jericho wins v. Batista [3rd]

Survivor Series '08

WWE Title: Edge wins v. Triple H (champion) and Vladimir Kozlov [4th]
World Title: John Cena wins v. Chris Jericho [5th]

Armageddon '08

World Title: John Cena retains v. Chris Jericho
WWE Title: Jeff Hardy wins v. Edge (champion) and Triple H [6th]

Royal Rumble '09

World Title: John Cena retains v. JBL
WWE Title: Edge wins v. Jeff Hardy [7th]

No Way Out '09

WWE Title: Triple H wins in Elimination Chamber [8th]
World Title: Edge wins in Elimination Chamber [9th]

WrestleMania XXV

World Title: John Cena wins v. Edge (champion) and The Big Show [10th]
WWE Title: Triple H retains v. Randy Orton

Backlash '09

WWE Title: Randy Orton wins v. Triple H in six-man tag-team match [11th]
World Title: Edge wins v. John Cena [12th]

...So, yeah, that's twelve world heavyweight title changes since SummerSlam, and I didn't even include the ECW Title in my calculations (which, for the sake of completion, changed hands three times: to Matt Hardy at Unforgiven, Jack Swagger on the 1/12 ECW on Sci Fi, and Christian at Backlash).

The most recent completed WWE Title reigns lasted 21, 42, 21, and 70 days, upon the completion of Triple H's seventh reign which went for 210.

The World Title's almost as bad; we haven't had a 100-day-plus reign with it since Edge's Armageddon-to-WM24 reign of 2007-08. Since then it's been 30, 29, 69, 49, 8, 20, 84, 49, 21.

It's not quite as bad as the "let's pass the WCW World Title around like a cheap whore" booking of 2000, though.

Yes, and lost to both. I can't wrap my head around the possible logic of feeding him to Kane at this point. It's all representative of the on-again, off-again push that Punk seems to be getting. First, he jobs the IC Title clean to JBL in a match that didn't need a clean ending at all, then JBL jobs it at Mania in less than half a minute, making Punk look like an even bigger chump. Then he wins Money In The Bank and exchanges hostile glares with Cena, only to job clean to Kane at the next PPV in a match that shouldn't have been had at all...

This was the best Backlash since 2000 in my mind, and it's a shame that so few people (probably) saw it. Even Kane and Punk threw out stuff I wasn't expecting and made their match entertaining.

Line of the Night: JR to Cole during Santino skit- "Who fed you that line?" Awesome. In fact, Cole was the only bad thing about this PPV, Khali-skit again notwithstanding.

Did the crowd really give Trips the "na na hey hey goodbye" treatment as he was being stretchered out? If so I think that would, if HHH was not a McMahon, be the end of that angle once and for all.

It sounded like it wasn't that many people who were doing so, but yes. The same folks also chanted "please retire" at him once they got tired of singing.

Okay, we can flip the result and have an HHH/someone he's wrestled at least eight times before program. Or we could stop posting the same Damn comments about Batista/Orton/HHH/Cena and accept that WWE's paying audience have a different set of priorities to us.
Jolly good show, I thought. Writing out HHH and Cena, even if temporarily, is welcome, and I'd much rather see the fresh Batista go up against Legacy. Punk jobbing is baffling, unless he's gonna have to go through Kane to get to Edge or something.

I hope this doesn't qualify as one of those same Damn comments, but why would Punk have to go through anyone to get Edge? He has a title shot any time he wants it.

It seemed like Raw was stacked with too many main event guys after the draft. But if Cena and HHH are gone for a while, and with HBK possibly on vacation until late summer, it's not quite as stacked as we thought. Maybe some guys can FINALLY step up in their absence?

I agree. Punk shouldn't have to go through anyone. I was just thinking if Kane were to be the "fly in the ointment" in Punk's quest to beat Edge. Constantly attacking him, saying he wants the briefcase, et cetera. But even then, they didn't need to job him last night.
Having said that, Punk needs as many big wins as he can get before cashing in. If the plan is for him to take his shot in Chicago, he needs to go over Shelton this week, Jericho the next, and so on. Then Kane can job to him once he's champ.

It's up there, but I thought 2004 and 2007 were near-perfect shows.

Does Raw have any next level guys besides MVP? I thought they all went to Smackdown.

This is Edge's 27th title in WWE. He shares that record number with Raven, albeit his being all Hardcore titles.

However as far as the length of time he has had them. he is still a way behind the likes of Hulk Hogan and Bruno Sammartino.

Totally agree. I'm not crazy about Punk, but this was the worst pay possible to begin his second go round with the briefcase. It could only be worse if he actually lost the briefcase. I would love to know what idiot thought it was a good idea to job him to Kane last night.

Kane was losing credibility as a contender, and his win polished his recent reputation. He hasn't won a big match in a long time, and Punk retains the briefcase while losing no stature. Punk has beaten Kane regularly for a while now; he cleanly pinned him in house shows two months ago Click Here (The W).
