He had lost his fastball from his days with Summerall on CBS and Fox, but he still was one of the more identifiable guys out there. Ended at least on a good Super Bowl. And of course: Tastes Great. Less Filling.
As much as I love the man, he was never able to shut Al Michaels up.
His schtick, to me at least, never got old. He was just an old school guy who went out, enjoyed a great game of football, and tried to explain it the best he could.

Dear God,
Please forgive Matt Tracker for this suggestion as he knows not what he suggests. Amen.
Seriously, that would pretty much guarantee that I'd never watch another Sunday night game since I can't stand Collinsworth. I asked 6+ years ago (The W) when Collinsworth became utterly useless, and I haven't seen anything from him in the time since to change my opinion.
As for Madden, he was great during his prime, but he'd become somewhat of a caricature of himself in the last couple of years. However, I'm glad he got to go out on his own terms and that the last game he did was actually a good one.

BRING BACK GOWDY AND DeROGATIS oh wait, they're both dead? Never mind.
On a serious note, could we somehow use this as an excuse to offload Michaels as well? I haaaaaaaaaate his commentary. He seems to think he's clever, charming, funny, and knows a lotta big words - whereas I feel the exact opposite way about him. (I'm sure people feel the same way about ME as well - those people can GO TO HELL)

If Collinsworth in the booth in real life would be anything like Collinsworth in the booth in (ironically) Madden 09, I will be forced to either kill myself or never watch another NBC football broadcast ever again.

He was awful during the 2004 NBA Finals. . .make that any NBA broadcast on ABC. His tone during the final seconds before the Pistons won the championship made Joe Buck's call of Eli's Great Escape sound exciting.
Madden has been one of my favorites for a long time, much like not hearing Keith Jackson on Saturdays, not hearing Madden on NFL broadcasts will take a little something away from the game.
Now head home to Oakland John, and help right the ship.

Although I agree with the others that this would suck, I'm afraid this is what will happen.
And before I can hit submit, Sirius NFL radio is anoucing that it is a done deal, and Collinswothless is headed to the Monday night booth (at least it isn't Kornheiser)

Why all the Collinsworth hate? He is one of the most prepared color guys in the game and he's not afraid to be critical of dumb shit teams do. At least he's bringing something to the table unlike a Troy Aikman.
Yeah, I don't get the Collinsworth hate either. He may be a little bit plain vanila, but he is as smart and as prepared as any commentator I have listen to recently. As for Michaels, *THAT* hate I can understand. He is an arrogant ass, so smug and yet he offers so little to the broadcast. It should had been him instead of Madden retiring. Madden wasn't quite what he used to be, but he was still a lot of fun to listen to. I'll miss him and I just hope this doesn't mean the end of the Madden NFL games.

Citifield- where we have obstructed views so you don't have to see all the gory details of how our team chokes on it yet again.
For all the people who can't stand Collinsworth, it could have been worse. They could have had Bryant Gumbel take over. I would cringe every time he would talk about ANTON Randel El.

Collinsworth would be a fantastic choice. He is by far the best of the big-name color guys --- Aikman and Simms are terrible. If NBC wanted to be fair, they'd get Dan Fouts to give him a shot in a two-man booth without having to put up with Dennis Miller's crap.

Well, personally I hate Michaels since he thinks HE is the show, not the game on the field. Plus, he's the only one who comes close to Brent Musberger as far as sticking to the "talking points" of a game, no matter what is actually happening on the field.
His call of that TD in green bay when the receiver fell, the ball bounced around, he caught it on his back and got up and ran in sealed the deal. His call "what? Are they going to say he caught it? Are you kidding me?" just annoys the ever living shit out of me, and for some reason they seem to replay that shit every single year.
Collinsworthless has learned to giggle his way, and smirk his way through every segment he was on during the sunday night games. He reminded me of Jimmy Fallon.
Is it fair to say that the people that like Collinsworth and the people that like (Howie / Terry) are opposites? Are there people that like both?
I'm saddened by this whole thing. My favorite game each week was the Sunday night game, and Madden and Michaels were an important part of that.
By the way, I absolutely HATE the MNF crew and think they sound Bush league.
I don't know why. I understand that I am getting "better" commentary on MNF but I just don't care for it. Maybe it is nostalgia on my part but I prefer the announcers I have heard for years.
Isn't Tony K. the "big thing" in Commentary? I don't listen to a lot of sports radio but I understand from the people on the board that he is very good.
I'm fine with Collinsworth, he knows his stuff, though yeah his personality is crappy.
But really is there another guy out there who knows the game and at the same time has a great friendly personality like Madden they can find to replace him?
Honestly for whatever reason I wondered how Golic would do at the gig. Didn't he do an Arena League game once or something?
What was so smart about hiring Mariucci? Steve Mariucci never got anything more out of the 49ers than was expected, and the Lions are no better under him than they were a year ago.
