http://www.dollverse.com/2009/04/dollhouse-ending-1-week-early-plus-dvd.html

Looks like Dollhouse's doors are closing for good. I'm shocked. Shocked! Well, not so shocked.

FOX is going to air up to episode 12 and call 12 the season finale. The actual series finale, episode 13 will not air. That will be a DVD exclusive to get whatever Dollhouse fans there are to buy the DVD. Fiendishly clever.

Honestly, I stopped caring during the pilot but held on a few weeks for that big Joss Whedon episode that was supposed to change everything. And I was still disinterested so I dropped Dollhouse a couple weeks back. Now, to no one's surprise, so has FOX.

This is a massive flop for Whedon, his worst ever. Poor Joss, poor Eliza. They try so hard.

I had never seen anything Joss Whedon before Dollhouse started. My GF had me watch Dr. Horrible and it lived up to it's name. Yawn. I tried the first episode of Buffy and I was bored.

I have been giving Dollhouse a try and even my GF, who is a Wheadon Zombie, keeps saying she wouldn't be surprised if it gets canceled early.

I have been giving Firefly and I've been liking it so far despite the random Chinese slang.

My problem with Dollhouse is that it's moving SO SLOW. They haven't touched Alpha since like episode 2 or 3 and now they can be lazy and just make anyone a sleeper agent to fuck with FBI guy.

NPH knows if you are sleeping, knows when you're awake, and knows when you besmirch one of his works undeservedly. Not to mention Felicia Day was adorable in that.

On topic: I've had a sinking feeling all along (Friday Deathslot) that this was going to wrap up early. Now Joss can get back to not making Ripper or the Buffy toon.

The network had already paid for 13 episodes, and this included the one they agreed to let us scrap for parts. It does not include the one we made to bring the number back up to 13 for the studio side and its obligations. We always knew it would be for the DVD for sure, but we also think Fox should air it because it’s awesome.

Dollhouse has been growing on me, but I'm more worried about the fate of the increasingly-awesome Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Oh, she was very adorable, but I was still bored out of my mind. It wasn't funny nor amusing and I hate musicals and she knew that before she suggested I watch the DVD.

I would be bummed if it got the ax, but I think it's safe for three reasons.

1) It's a season finale they're advertising.
2) They aren't doing that limited advertising thing that Fringe and the now canceled Dollhouse has. While it has the same or worse ratings than Dollhouse, I'm sure it's advertising revenue per rating point is probably better than Dollhouse.
3) It doesn't make sense to cancel it right before a Terminator movie comes out. If it does well and spark renewed interest in the franchise and new viewers, it makes sense to keep it. If it doesn't, they can cancel while it's on hiatus.

I'll have to wait for the DVD's with Joss' commentary, but after Dr. Horrible, Joss seems way more interested in Internet-based media, and I get the sense that he was just doing Dollhouse for the sake of finishing the season and letting it get cancelled. The show was so unconventional, and Joss hamstrung himself by not giving himself a core-group of heroes to play with, that it felt more like he was doing this as a writing exercise as opposed to trying to make a good tv show.

Joss was SO lucky that Buffy landed on the WB back in the day. His shows require the kind of cult following only a struggling fifth network would allow. Dollhouse is just like Life on Mars and all those overpushed high-concept serials that ABC keeps trying to throw on after LOST. And no network is going to let the shows stick around long enough to find an audience. Hell, the only reason Battlestar Gallactica had any success was because it got thrown on Sci-Fi. I think that if Fox had put Dollhouse on FX, we might be talking about this whole thing differently.

The concept of a Buffy toon disturbs me.

The first episode is all establishment. At least keep watching to make it through the first season. That should get you into it enough to go until season 3. When they graduate, you may want to stop. Season 4 and 5 are okay. Season 6 is angsty, but has some good episodes (the musical, for example.) There is no season 7.

Also, what I didn't mention is that Buffy was annoying to me with all her catty/sarcastic comments. That type of dialogue doesn't usually bother me (in fact, some of my favorite episodes of Roseanne were written by Wheadon), but there was something about SMG that just rubbed me the wrong way. She made Buffy instantly dislikeable to me.

I don't know why, but all his series have had someone with unconventional nicknames. They sound so, I guess, annoying to me. Like a cop named Jake Bullet or something. Xander instead of Alex, Topher, instead of Chris. The closest one is Mal for Malcolm in Firefly, but I guess it was better than having the crew call him Colm all season.

I have just come to accept that his writing style just doesn't jive with what I like. Why did I watch alot of this stuff then? So in return that the girlfriend will watch some of my weird stuff like Red Dwarf, Breaking Bad, Blackadder, and Ab Fab. She loves the first two, and we haven't made it to the last two yet.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

Don't start the funeral procession for Dollhouse just yet. Airlock Alpha says Fox is leaning towards a renewal (airlockalpha.com), as well as towards cancellation for Sarah Connor Chronicles. Relevant parts of the article follow.

Factors pointing to a Dollhouse renewal:

It's not a number that Fox uses, but "Dollhouse" carries a BlipNetwork Stability Index Rating of 92.0, better than every other network genre show currently on television outside of "Reaper" on The CW, which has a 94.7. A Stability Index Rating is the comparison of the show's highest overnight rating and its average overnight rating to see how much of its overall audience a show has retained.

Other factors in favor of the show continuing is that it's not as expensive as other Fox shows. Much of its upfront costs, including the construction of the elaborate set that is the dollhouse itself, were covered by funds that normally would've paid for a pilot (no pilot was made for "Dollhouse"). Also, while Whedon's Mutant Enemy Productions and star Eliza Dushku's Boston Diva Productions are tied to the series, 20th Century Fox Television is still the primary production company involved, which means its licensing fee is not as steep as it would be if the show was produced by another studio.

Factors pointing to a Sarah Connor Chronicles cancellation:

Rumors were that Warner Bros. Television, which produces ["Sarah Connor Chronicles"], slashed its licensing fee to prompt a pickup as a way to help it promote its upcoming "Terminator: Salvation," which premieres May 21.

Once "Salvation" premieres, it seems Warner Bros. will have little use to keep "Sarah Connor" on the air, and likely will not continue to provide a licensing fee discount for a third season. That almost assuredly will allow Fox to make the move it normally would've done before New Year's, and that's cancel the show.

Last year, "Sarah Connor" had the worst Stability Index Rating of all network genre shows, mostly from its inflated series premiere following the National Football League playoffs. This year, it's Stability Index Rating is stronger, but out of 14 network genre show[s] tracked by Airlock Alpha this season, "Sarah Connor" is ranked 13th. Only "Life On Mars" had a worse Stability Index Rating, mostly from its freefall following its move from Thursdays against "Eleventh Hour" to Wednesdays following "Lost."

Let's just say I hope they're right and leave it at that.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

It actually gets worse over the years. Buffy's one of the least fun characters on the show. Its the rest of the cast that makes the show worthwhile. You'll learn to overlook her soon enough.

I don't know why, but all his series have had someone with unconventional nicknames.
Have you looked at the credits for Dollhouse? Dichen, Tahmoh, Enver... I don't think she's listed by November is played by a Miracle. I think Joss' naming conventions may just be a reflection of his own strange world...

Given that Reaper's getting the axe, I don't see how that Stability Index Rating is all that valuable. That said, if Dollhouse is really all that cheaper, maybe we'll get lucky.

I'm sorry to see DOLLHOUSE go. I really enjoyed it. I thought last weeks' episode (where everyone tried to bust out of the complex only to turn back at the last minute) was the season finale.

Shit...Reaper's getting axed? Damn, there are some decent shows that are ending (or have ended) this year.

Wow, I...totally disagree with that. I actually like the later seasons of Buffy much, much more, or at least can rewatch them much more readily. The cast is clearly inexperienced and still feeling out their roles early on, and the only one who's immediately awesome is Willow (who is the most Joss of all Joss characters, I think). True, there was a great deal of masturbatory angst in the later seasons but, well...it's a show about a teenage girl. The later seasons have Spike, Anya, Evil Willow, the musical episode and, generally, pretty much all the stuff I remember most fondly. Angel's that way for me, too, never really getting spectacularly good until the Pylean trilogy and the introduction of Fred.

I do hope Dollhouse continues, although I'm admittedly still a few episodes behind on my DVR. I just wish networks would stop greenlighting shows that obviously are going to be cult and need time to build an audience (Every Bryan Fuller show other than Heroes springs to mind). Maybe it's just for the DVD sales? The sad thing is, the pull-the-rug mentality is part of the reason these shows fail, as many people who might like them don't bother to watch because they know they'll never see the end of it (I have several friends who loved Buffy/Angel/Firefly, but haven't watched Dollhouse for that precise reason).

Chiming in to disagree the other way. I thought the acting was plenty good in seasons 2 & 3 of Buffy (the show's strongest seasons, IMHO), and the Season 3 finale pulls off the impressive feat of working as a season finale AND a series finale, had The WB decided to end it there. Season 6 is TERRIBLE, with the stupid Nerd Trio of Doom, whiny Buffy 24/7, 'Magic-is-Crack' Willow, the Spike/Buffy mess that came to dominate the show, and an even more whiny & irritating Dawn (seriously, the girl's dialogue for every episode consisted of screaming "Shut up! Shut Up! SHUT UP!"). Yeah, the musical was impressive, but in terms of "special" episodes, Season 4's "Hush" kills the musical dead. Season 7 wasn't bad as much as it was boring, saved only by the unique idea of activating all potential Slayers in the last episode.

As for the topic at hand, I'm not surprised it was canceled, given the time slot, and the network it was on. I agree with what was said early....Joss was fortunate to have a network like The WB support his show and give it time to find an audience. His best shot, if he chooses to develop another show, is to shoot for one of the cable TV networks, like Sci-Fi or USA.

I can't say that I'm too broken up about Dollhouse being canceled...I caught the first two episodes, and thought they were okay, but nothing worth setting the DVR for. Eliza Dushku is pretty to look at, but I don't think she's that great of an actress where you can build a show around her.

Last Friday's episode was arguably the best of the series thus far, so I can't help but think that Dollhouse is having its legs cut out from under it before it hits its stride.

In my opinion Buffy is one of those shows where if you watched it from the beginning the early episodes probably seem better than they are. For a new viewer to go back and watch those seasons for the first time now it isn't that impressive. The dialogue is funnier, the stories are better, and I prefer my Spike as a bad guy, but the show is very rough and the acting is horrible. In the later seasons the stories aren't as good but the show is much more polished.

That is why I always recommend Angel over Buffy to a new viewer. I don't think Angel picks up until the second season but when it gets good it's running on all cylinders which Buffy never does at any time in the series.

Buffy season 3 is awesome, but it ties up alot of threads that start in season 1. I guess you could probably just start with season 2, but season 1 is short and the Robot Demon episode is awesome.

If anything, I'd say do Buffy 1-3 and then go to Angel. Angel is probably the only show I can think of where the quality of each season improved, so that there was never a dull season or a let down. I'd recommend more than Buffy, but I still view it as from the same Buffy cloth.

At any rate, Buffy S3 and Angel S5 are two of my favorite tv seasons.

Agreed. It's funny, virtually all of S3 of Angel was terrible, but from about the fifth-last episode of S3, Angel was just pure awesome until the series concluded. I'd put S4-5 of Angel up against S2-3 of Buffy any day.
