Bye bye, cartoons!

Boosts live action, unscripted series in effort to become "dominant youth culture brand"

New York -- Cartoon Network is boosting its live action fare and expanding into unscripted alternative programming in an attempt to woo a slightly older (and potentially more profitable) new crowd.

"Just like the boy that wakes up one day and starts to sound different, our voice is changing too," said Stu Snyder president and COO of Turner Broadcasting's Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media division.

Turner and Cartoon Network executives made their pitch at the Frederick P. Rose Hall at Time Warner Center, with a backdrop consisting of buzzwords to describe the new strategy such as "authentic," "real stakes," and "un-sanitized."

At the forefront of the strategy are a slate of new alternative series that seem to take their cues from more grownup cable networks such as Discovery and Sci Fi, though with teens and tweens as the stars.

Ugh. That sounds like the worst news possible. One day all of us will be saying "remember when the Cartoon Network actually showed cartoons?"

Exactly. And 10 years from now, the channel will be called "The CN" and no one under 20 will remember what the "C" stands for.

Side note: Not one of the high school-aged trick-or-treaters who came to my door last Halloween could tell me what the "M" in "MTV" stands for :(

Well, I'm certainly not the target audience. But I can certainly say that those programming ideas rank among the worst ever.

Hey! Maybe Adult Swim can get their own channel now. And fill it with Perfect Hair Forever and 12 oz. Mouse episodes!

Other new animated fare includes Adventure Time with Finn and Jake, based on the popular short film by Pendleton Ward.

Much like VH1 plays videos from the original MTV, so too will Boomerang play all the old CN cartoons.

And they will need to create a new channel to show all the stuff they used to show on Boomerang.

as well as a spinoff of its most recent hit Total Drama Island, dubbed Total Drama Action

I think I would be excited about this even if I hadn't... watched about 15 episodes of Total Drama Island today.

Total Drama Action is disturbingly similar to Total Nonstop Action.

I think you mean, much like VH1 used to play videos from the original MTV, so too will Boomerang for a while play the old CN cartoons.

Then they'll switch to playing new cartoons, and then go to a mix of reality shows and programs where they show little bits of cartoons while Chris Jericho, Mo Rocca, and Michael Ian Black comment on them.

It's amazing how all of these cable networks end up abandoning their premises....

Sing this special song. It's just for you.
At least they haven't decided to misspell their name. Yet.

I begin to think that, eventually, this is the way of all networks. One day, perhaps, Animal Planet will be nothing but Motorcross programming.

Oh god, this means they are going to keep those kids they put in sketches in commercial breaks doesn't it? The Dynamite Action Squad or whatever...

Aren't they just going to end up rehashing "You can't do that on Television" and those kind of shows? Maybe they'll replace 6Teen and some of that dreck with this. I think this might be an attempt to compete with Disney Channel's tween shows, and Noggin's Soap Opera Teen shows. It shouldn't do anything to Adult Swim Programming I wouldn't think. I imagine they are only talking about their after-school to Prime Time slots.

Yeah, the story specifically says this is a CN-only announcement and has nothing to do with [as]. I guess they'll have their own upfront later (or already have? Maybe I should go look).

I'm thinking emma watches a lot more [as] than CN, but I could be wrong!

Why aren't old Warner Bros. cartoons on Boomerang anymore? My cable company finally added that cable channel to the lineup a couple of months ago, and I was all psyched to see some old school Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck interaction ... alas, it was not meant to be.

I watched it as my TV listings said that The Fixx was going to be performing...instead I got no...umm Fixx fix. Juice sounded OK, and I thought looked OK all things considered...it's been quite a while. I thought PM Dawn were awful...
