Schilling retires (sports.espn.go.com)

Probably my second favorite pitcher.

Some may curse the person who introduced him to blogging.

The sock's going to the HOF. Does he?

I think Schill's playoff heroics will push him over the line for HOF voters. Not sure if it'll necessarily be in his first year of eligibility, but he'll get in.

Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

Game 6 of the 2004 ALCS is still the gutsiest thing I have ever watched as a sports fan.

Yeah, I agree...if you just go by the regular season, he's borderline, probably out, but the postseason puts him in. I mean, the guy was *11-2* career in the postseason. What he did in 2004 was as close to "heroic" as one can get by playing a sport and let's not forget that in 2001 he and Randy Johnson beat the mighty Yankees pretty much all by themselves. (That was a mediocre offensive team at best, and the bullpen blew two games for them but they still managed to take the series.) He also pitched very well in Game 2 to help the Sox win the Series again in 2007. (That turns out to be the last time he pitched in a game.) So that's three World Championships, two of which he was a major leader in. Add that to what he did in the regular season and I'm more than convinced he's a Hall of Famer.

...what PTH said. I can't think of many players I've refered to more as "Whattadouche", but the guy's been one of the best for years and I am pretty sure I'd vote him in if I had a ballot. Four top five finishes (no wins) for the CYA, three 20-win seasons, twice in the top ten in MVP (10th both times, but still), and 300+ Ks three times. He was a horse, and I always admired him as a player even though I hated him as a Yanks fan. He doesn't have the overall career numbers (216 wins, 3.46 ERA), but he was money in the post-season, has three rings, pitched well in the WS for three different teams (3-1/2.06), and over the course of many years, I always thought of him as one of the best in the game.

Umm...holy crap...I really, REALLY did not expect this. Reports: Jim Thome to Los Angeles Dodgers as White Sox deal It looked like the Dodgers were about to be a potential first round exit, but a 3-4-5 combo of Manny, Thome, and Ethier?
- It's False, Jim Thome sent to Los Angeles (2009)
