I was not sure where to post this so I am putting it up here. Eachday at 10 am EST, I tune into 1050 ESPN Radio to hear Max. Today there was a quik note saying ESPN and Max parted ways and that Brandon Tierney now has his slot. I am curious if anyone knows why Max left or if he was fired.

This kills two ways: I loved Max's show and I hate Brandon Tierney.

"Marriage is like that show ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’, but it’s not funny. All the problems are the same, but you know instead of all the funny, pithy dialogue, everybody is really pissed off and tense. Marriage is like a tense, unfunny version of 'Everybody Loves Raymond', only it doesn't last 22 minutes. It lasts forever."

I have to say I'm shocked. I still thought Kellerman was doing "I, Max" on Fox Sports Net. But wikipedia tells me they cancelled that in 2005.

The statement on his wikipedia page (which is unsourced and should therefore be taken as a rumor) says:

Kellerman and ESPN radio ended their relationship on March 9, 2009. His time slot is currently being shared by Colin Cowherd and Brandon Tierney. Kellerman was forced out by new producers and managment who also forced out his mates Gordan Damer, Robin Lundberg, and Louie Gold earlier in the year. ESPN attempted to cut his hours on the radio. His loyal fans are waiting for his next show.

I must have checked Wikipedia too early this morning to see that. Count me among those looking ofrward to his return to radio sooner than later.

This sucks. I like Brandon Tierney but Max was the only tolerable show on radio for me to listen to after Mike and Mike. Tirico sucks, Kay's a blowhard and Yankee apologist, and Mike Francesa is an even bigger blowhard these days. With the overreaction to his former parnter Russo's comments about ESPN catching up to him on the NYC metro area airwaves and the Ryan Church/David Wright fiasco, Francesa's ego is getting out of control.
But back to Kellerman. I find too bad that he split up with ESPN again. His show was pretty diverse, even with the hockey 'minute', which was still a minute more than what most shows here give the sport. I knew he never was going to be allowed to do such, but I always hoped that sometime during his second venture at ESPN that he would be allowed to guest host 'Around The Horn'. Don't get me wrong, Tony Reali is a good host, but Kellerman had a chemistry there that made the show even better than PTI during his time there as host, IMO.
As for where he goes, I'm not sure he has many options. I doubt he would go back to Fox Sports considering how they mistreated his show, especially the fact that they abandoned him for the most part while he still had to deal with his brother's murder. While he's knowledgeable on most sports, he's mainly a boxing personality, so I don't see how he would fit to say CBS or NBC sports. So I'm guessing that he goes to HBO or Showtime for their boxing broadcasts. Otherwise, he's probably not going to have a high-profile job anytime soon.

He's been HBO's boxing analyst (splitting assignments with Larry Merchant) for probably a year now. He just did the Marquez/Diaz and Kirkland/Julio cards for HBO.

Newsday's Watchdog, which I'd usually look for things like this, doesn't have much besides the press release.

Nationally, ESPN radio is shifting things around or about to - I think Colin Cowherd is ending up with an extra hour with the idea that he'd also be more visible in places like New York. That'd probably be an hour out of Max's show.

Perhaps the local station wanted him to take a pay cut as a result and he said no.

The Daily News had an article speculating--emphasis on speculating, as they don't seem to have any actual reason to think this--that he's looking to end up as Mike Francesa's co-host. Seems unlikely to me, but I suppose it's possible.

Everyone's favorite Phil Mushnick in the Post also wrote a column with that as the presumption. Francesa can't do 5 hours every day by himself much longer, and with Ian Eagle turning it down, time to go to plan b.

FWIW, Simmons mentioned on his last podcast that a reader told him he saw Max and Francesa having lunch or something, and Bill and JackO discussed the possibility of those guys teaming up for a couple minutes.

Meltzer mentioned that too in his update today, it's starting to get some traction. Francesa needs someone though, like you say, he can't do 5 hours by himself all the time, and he really needs someone to work off of.

It would give Kellerman a little more exposure too- YES just reupped their deal to simulcast that show.

Kellerman would be an interesting partner to Francesa. The thing isn't just to find a sidekick but a person who can host the show himself when Mike goes on his vacations during the spring and summer (he sometimes tends to take at least 2-3 weeks off). With Max's experience, that shouldn't be a problem. And considering Francesa's health issues, you wonder if maybe the FAN might start to groom a sucessor, just in case. My only thing is with having having to deal with a show that's already hosted by a Yankee fan being paired with another Yankee fan... on the Mets station. While on the other sports station here, the afternoon drive is hosted by the biggest Yankee supporter in Michael Kay. UGH.

EDIT: Oh, and I keep forgetting to talk about Kellerman being replaced with Cowherd. If ESPN thinks this is a good idea, they're braindead. They apperently don't remember the last time they had his show on here in NY; it was a ratings disaster and they replaced it Stephen A. Smith. His show is too focused on college sports, which other than the big bowl games or March Madness, no one gives a damn about here. This has fail written all over it. Hell, I still won't listen to him because of the Eddie Guerrero insults.

Eddie G. insults aside, I wont listen to him because he sucks. And now they are running snippets of him saying the Mets were bad last year due to their bullpen, now their bullpen is good so they are WS bound. He is pandering to Mets fans in order to get listeners. Well, not me. My radio tuned to 1050 will turn off at 10 after Mike & Mike for the day. Cowherd is awful and Kay is no better, especially now with YANKEE BASEBALL is full swing. However, I will tune in when the Yankees are too far out of the Wild Card to keep hope alive - which such be the All Star game. How he will fill 4 hours then is beyond me.
