Yeah, I mentioned in a much earlier thread, that lost in all of this is that the Dodgers' #1 starter is CHAD FREAKIN' BILLINGSLY! I like him and all, but no way is he a #1 starter. Especially when you realize how he has a tendency to blow up (and brother, when he blows up, he IMPLODES epically).
I actually don't look for the Dodgers to make a lot of noise this year, unless they run out and make a deadline trade for a good arm. When the Dodgers are running six games behind the D-backs in the division because of their piss-poor pitching, everyone will realize just how stupid this whole drama with Manny really was.

And remember this about Manny: He is lethal when his team is playing meaningful games, as for the vast majority of his career his team has played meaningful games. When his team goes bad and the games have no meaning (late '01 Boston, last 6 weeks '06 Boston) Manny goes bye-bye.

I think maybe having Manny on the teams he's played for may have affected the fact that they were playing meaningful games. And unless someone in that division is unexpectedly good I have a feeling they'll be playing meaningful games pretty late. And he'll be very good for ticket/merchandise sales too.

This is actually a victory for the Dodgers. Especially since he (and by he of course I mean Bora$) was expecting four years, 100 million. (Baseball Prospectus - Circa Nov 08)
Additionally, $15M of his 2009 salary will be deferred (without interest, as CPA Manny Ramirez was kind enough to bring to light.)

Yeah, has anyone heard the reasoning for that? Are the Dodgers expecting cash flow problems in 2009 that would necessitate deferring payment?

Does there HAVE to be a reason? Money not spent is money saved is money earned. Time value of money is always a big deal; it's ESPECIALLY a big deal when we're talking about millions of dollars and this type of economy.

I think it's a fair question to ask since they were apparently unwilling to budge on the deferred money provision. They were willing to let Manny sign with someone else rather than pay him the $25 million that they agree that he is worth for 2009. If he had signed with someone else, I'm sure the fans would want to know why the deferred money was so important. I will continue to assume cash flow problems.
Jason Schmidt: ~14.6M (12M base + 2.6M Bonus) (2009) ***ONE CAREER WIN AS A DODGER (signed in 2007)***
Hiroki Kuroda: 12.4M (10M base + 2.4M Bonus) (2009) ***9-10, 114 ERA+ in 2008***
Juan Pierre: 10M (2009) ***OPS+ over last two years: 75 ('07), 73 ('08)*** ***22 walks in 406 PA in 2008***
Rafael Furcal: 6.5M (2009) ***Signed 3y/30M starting 2009. $5M + $3M bonus defered until 2011.*** ***AND if (then) 33-year-old Furcal manages 600 PAs in 2011 he is guaranteed $12M in 2012***
Andruw Jones: 5M (2009) ***Not on team*** ***Add'l ~16M owed over 2010-14)
These seven people's combined salaries in 2009: approx $62.8M
You can see where they like the idea of defering money until it's somebody else's problem. But hey, maybe they'll sell enough of those Manny wigs to make up for it.
Also, Boras was all for deferred money, since it meant he could say he got his client a huge contract in a bad economy. I think they were just arguing over how much was going to be deferred.

Actually, it turns out that because Ramirez is going to receive no interest on the deferred payments, he's "only" going to see $42 million of that money. Well, in that case.
