Team 3D vs. Kurt Angle and Sting: Most of the story here is that Angle and Sting are NOT ON THE SAME PAGE, with Sting trying to be a team player and Angle consistently being a giant dick. He keeps dropping off the apron every time Sting requests a tag, until finally Sting slaps him, hauls him in, and shoves him...into a Devon schoolboy for the pin.

Angle and Sting start brawling and the rest of the Main Event Mafia has to break it up. Kurt gets a mic and demands that Sting lay down for him, basically handing him the title. Jeff Jarrett is out and says "um, no," but Sting is all like "yeah, sure, later tonight I'll do just that." Hmm.

Petey Williams vs. Scott Steiner: This is a headdress -- wait for it -- on a pole match -- a fight for identity! I still like Steiner. Petey tries hard, but by the end Scott is just toying with him -- Petey can't win even after he hits Steiner a couple of times with the steel pipe. Steiner hits a Samoan Drop off the top to put Petey away permanently.

Samoa Joe pops up on the big screen and talks trash to Steiner.

Knockouts Gauntlet for the #1 contender-ship. 9 Knockouts, over the top rope, becomes pinfall when down to the last two. Usual suspects here -- The Beautiful People, the Kongtourage, Roxxi, Taylor Wilde, and ODB -- and the addition of Madison Rayne -- pretty generic from what we see of her, even though she makes it to the final two. Sojourner Bolt puts her away with a...Gory faceplant, let's say.

Some nice spots, but mostly uneventful. Kip kept catching the Beautiful People and putting them back in, prompting Don West to say, "these people need to realize where Kip James is and toss the Beautiful People from a different side!"

Sojo seems pretty happy with her victory until the rest of the Kongtourage -- Raisha Saeed and Rhaka Khan -- come to the top of the ramp and stare her down. Sojo (who of course will be taking on Awesome Kong for the title) seems discomfited by that. Interesting development!

Motor City Machine Guns vs. Lethal Consequences: This was fun -- of course -- with lots of flying around, double-team stuff, and some nice reversals -- I loved the spot where Lethal went for his handspring elbow and Sabin just kicked him in the face while he was in the handstand. Sabin got taken out by the Lethal Combination and it was down to Lethal and Shelley -- Shelley got out of Lethal's Dragon Suplex and went for Sliced Bread, but Lethal reversed that into a face-first slam for the three.

Afterward, the MCMG were magnanimous in defeat, shaking Lethal Consequences' hands and -- OHHH simultaneous kicks to the balls and the Motor City Machine Gun Salute.

ODB has her talk show and I pause in my fast-forwarding to watch Brutus Magnus. He talks about his Open Challenge and ODB says, "I got an Open Challenge for you right here! OHHHHHHH!" HA HA! Magnus is appalled.

Abyss is in his therapist's office -- his therapist is "Dr. Stevie" and even though we only see the back if his head, it's obviously Stevie Richards. Are we going to be expected to believe that Richards is a therapist now? Actually, I will forgive this IF they reveal that Stevie became a therapist to try and help his crazy crazy girlfriend Victoria -- and then they bring in Victoria and then Victoria, Stevie, and Abyss form a CRAZY CRAZY NUTBAR stable.

I have to point out that the introduction of a pushing-forty ex-WWEer in the same week that TNA cuts three young, mostly homegrown wrestlers leaves a bad taste in my mouth. (Tangentially, Wikipedia tells me that Stevie Richards's real name is "Michael Manna" -- how do you have a name like "Michael Manna" and decide that you should go by "Stevie Richards" instead?)

Abyss & Rhino vs. Beer Money, Inc.: Predictably, Matt Morgan shows up (While Slick Mark Johnson is distracted -- for about half an hour) and beans Abyss with a chair. James Storm sneaks in the pin, and Morgan and Beer Money look to be on the same page.

(Come on -- Abyss, Richards, & Victoria vs. Beer Money & Jacqueline? Perfect!) (Yes, I am aware that Victoria, also, falls into the category of "pushing-forty ex-WWEer.")

Mick Foley takes the time to tell us about AWESOME MATCHES that he had YEARS BEFORE TNA WAS EVER BORN. I fail to see the point -- THIS is what makes Foley the "Greatest Acquisition Ever?"

Kurt Angle and Sting are out for the Title Switch Ceremony. Sting cuts a promo -- mostly while on his back -- questioning Kurt's integrity (why, that's one of the three "I"s!) and honor. Kurt ultimately rejects the easy pin and tells Sting that he'll take it from him in a match.

Awesome. AJ Styles and Samoa Joe don't care about the title anymore, apparently, and now Angle and Sting are going to fight over it. The Main Event Mafia is falling apart, but not in any way due to the efforts of the ridiculous, ineffective Frontline, who are now reduced even further, to the status of bystanders. Bravo.

I haven't seen a single episode of this since the MEM came to fruition, but reading about it I feel like it's the entire histories of the NWO and the Millionaires Club (or whatever the Hogan-led group that opposed the New Blood was called) combined and condensed into just a few months.

Just for the record, the episode also further advanced the AJ vs Booker story line. Booker, in a backstage interview, stated that he would see to it that AJ was prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for stealing Booker's legend title. Immediately after the interview Booker was attacked by AJ. So it looks like AJ vs Booker and Samoa Joe vs Scott Steiner at the next PPV.

Because he started out as a parody of Shawn Michaels (the two first names thing...), right?

Going off of the backstage bit with Angle smashing the picture of Sting, can we officially rename Impact? I vote for the Shut Up Don West Extravaganza.

First, drjay, is that Batista's face on Peter in your avatar? Can't really tell but if so that is AWESOME.

This was the first time I watched a whole Impact in a while and it wasn't awful so I'll give them that. I enjoyed the Machine Guns vs. LQ match a lot even if the live crowd was dead. The Knockouts Gauntlet match was decent for what it was, but the division still suffers for losing Gail. Speaking of which, when the hell is she debuting in WWE?

Steiner vs. Petey was decent for being another dumbass pole match. I can't believe they cut Petey of all people with all the other dead weight on the roster.

ODB's Angle actually got a laugh out of me even though Brutus and his awful finisher do nothing for me.

Beer Money is awesome. Abyss/Rhino would be a decent team to add depth to the division. Not a big fan of either as singles.

Love how Tenay put over how great it was for TNA to give us the privelige of seeing another match with Sting/Angle/Team 3D. We haven't seen that one in a while!

I have no problems with a Sting/Angle match, but they need to blow off that angle fast and get back to focusing on Frontline vs. MEM. Preferably the Frontline with Joe/Angle and the like and NOT the old guys. Jarrett or Foley need to turn at some point. Who wants to root for a babyface faction with THREE babyface authority figures and they STILL can't win? Speaking of the MEM/Frontline, it confuses me when they put over Beer Money potentially losing the titles as a victory for the Frontline. When were Beer Money ever officially in the MEM? Same for the MCMGs. How are they in Frontline when they aren't really involved with the MEM?

I like the fact that they didn't show Homicide's clean win over Brutus Magnus. Somebody with an ounce of logic did the right thing.

The show was better than past efforts, but there is still a lot of dreck within Impact's walls.

Well, they showed him getting his ass slapped by ODB in her talk segment. If I was him, I perfer the pinfall being shown.

So after all that fanfare and the two squashes, Brutus Magnus is relegated to getting his ass slapped by ODB and eating pins on Xplosion? Man, the E gives you at least 3 jobber matches before they meet out that kind of treatment. Unless, of course, you're Kizarny.

According to the f4W recap, you can see the Legends title sitting on a table during the Booker/AJ skit.

Actually, it's not. I don't disagree with you, and it could turn out great, but the problem is that TNA has a reputation for being eager to toss aside their home-grown stars in favor of whatever WWEject stops by and shows a little ankle.

I think they get a little more heat than they currently deserve for this, but they brought it on themselves -- most recently, by going through an awful period in 2007 where they brought in Rikishi, Test, and the Bashams, all high-profile utter failures. Test and Rikishi, in particular, were immediately pushed to near the top of the card before each of them abruptly left, leaving TNA looking pretty foolish and like they had no ability to learn from their mistakes.

Since then, I think TNA has been a lot smarter with its pickups, but that stench remains and colors a lot of people's perceptions of the company, and the particular timing of this (Richards hired, three TNA guys fired) plays right into that.

And maybe there's no connection. I've read that a lot of the lower card guys don't get paid unless they're actually used on the show, so (if this is true) for a guy like Hoyt they're not actually saving money by canning him (and Hoyt -- not getting paid anyway -- may in fact be better off by being freer to pursue other options [I am totally making things up here, having no idea how these things actually work]).

So I guess the question is: Is Stevie Richards awesome enough to offset the continuing encouragement of the perception that TNA values near-middle-aged WWE castoffs more than homegrown originals that have been with them for years? (Or, I suppose, offset the damage that said perception causes?) Maybe he will be.

Lower-card guys who they weren't really using, nor did they have plans for. Petey's back in the Mini-Steiner role, people. Considering how much they've been on TV, how many fans are going to miss the Rock and Rave Infection, when you think about it?

Besides, nothing's stopping them from popping in on per-appearance deals while going around the indies, and "TNA alumnus" isn't going to hurt their resumes any.

Here's an actual fresh face: TNA has reportedly signed Rob Terry (musclemania.com), a Welsh Body Builder. He was in WWE developmental for a while.

The phrase "body builder" never fills me with confidence; still, better this guy than Chris Masters.
