Well, this is the week that Final Crisis (mercifully) comes to an end. Let's take the plunge...

FINAL CRISIS #7: Grant Morrison has a knack for confusing the hell out of readers and then neatly tying everything together at the end. This is not one of those times. I'm STILL confused as all hell by what happened and the ending leads to...well...I don't know WHAT it leads to. Oh, and not only does Batman NOT come back, but he also apparently didn't even get the killing blow on Darkseid, after all, as the big blue baddie is still standing at the start of the issue. The Flashes apparently save the day, but I wouldn't know it, considering they're only in two pages. This whole thing was just a huge mess and, thankfully, the general idea is that we'll never have to see a Monitor grace a DC page again. At least I hope that's the idea. What a mess. Thumbs down.

FINAL CRISIS: REVELATIONS #5: In spite of everything, this was a very enjoyable tie-in. The chemistry between the new Question and the Huntress is great, as they infused those brief bits of humor into an otherwise dark story. But the ending is just heartwarming, as Crispus Allen finally gets the happy ending he deserves. Good job, Mr. Rucka. Now where's my Question ongoing? Thumbs up!

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #23: LONG after the events of "Black Adam: The Dark Age", Black Adam finally realizes that he was duped and he swiftly hands Felix Faust his ass. Isis is back proper, this time. But there's this whole matter of her being dead for a while and she didn't take too kindly to that, so she's now EVIL ISIS~! They take over the Rock of Eternity, promptly giving Billy Batson the boot. Oh, and the JSA is in this issue too, as they're regrouping. Possibly with Atom Smasher, which should make the next few issues interesting. Issue ends with Black Adam and Isis coming to terms with Mary Marvel. Aw hell, has she gone evil AGAIN? That angle is seriously getting played. Thumbs in the middle, leaning up.

BATMAN #685: Ok, now everything with Batman's just getting wacky. They acknowledge that he escaped the end of "RIP" and they mention Final Crisis, but Selina just says that Bruce is "MIA". MIA? His corpse was CHARRED! That ain't MIA to me. But anyway, the issue consists of Catwoman trying to escape the cartel she's joined while dragging Hush along for the ride. Selina escapes, but leaves Hush to the wolves. The wolves, in this case, being Nightwing and Robin. This obviously won't be the last we'll see of Tommy Elliot. I give Paul Dini credit. He turned Hush from a horrible concept to a big player in the Bat-world. Thumbs in the middle, leaning up.

NEW AVENGERS #49: I went in expecting yet another new direction, but it comes across more as a Secret Invasion epilogue, with the Baby Cage story getting paid off. The New Avengers lineup is pretty much the same old lineup plus Bucky America. Issue ends with the NA seeing the Dark Avengers on the TV and vowing vengeance. Clint Barton, in particular, is pretty miffed about the dude wearing the Hawkeye suit. Watching Luke Cage take it to Osborn and his goons is enough to merit a recommendation here. Thumbs up!

AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #21: It's (dun dun dun) THE RETURN OF CLONE THOR CLOR RAGNAROK! Various Initiative members are getting re-assigned, but that matters not to Ragnarok, who arrives to kill everyone dead. He wipes out anything in his way, including Thor Girl and Trauma, before the issue ends with him facing off against the New Warriors. This is a fun story in the making and I like it so far. Thumbs up!

ANGEL: AFTER THE FALL #16: I had an idea of where this story was going, but suddenly, EVERYTHING got turned on its head. The payoff is finally here and it wasn't what I thought it would be at all. That's not a bad thing, as Joss Whedon and Brian Lynch thew a major curveball and it worked. I won't even spoil it here, but I'll urge fans to get this conclusion. Thumbs up! Good stuff here.

It's been a while, but we can all finally take breathers from the "event comics". Well, at least until Blackest Night arrives. See you next time!

I've been reading comics for the past 30 years and have pretty much liked/loved every DC "big event", not counting that "New Blood" fiasco. Final Crisis sure felt like it should have been just nail-biting good fun reading. What in the bloody hell was this crap. Honestly, all I've really read were DC comics, but really the only thing about this thing that got me excited was the return of Barry Allen stuff, and he wasn't even in issue 6, was he?
I couldn't keep this story straight to save my life. Darkseid gets shot by the Godbullet that killed Orion in one shot, but can still stand around like a day on the beach, until the Black Racer takes him down? What the fuck? From Darkseid's schpiel, I got the feeling they picked Turpin because somewhere deep down he WANTED to become DS's body host? Am I taking this wrong?
Also, Superman memorized every nut and bolt on the Miracle Machine and they now have one in present day time, and Luthor and Sivana have part of the specs on this thing now?
How did Wonder Woman get free from that virus? How did Lois Lane get Batman's cowl so fast to put in the rocket? (Yes, I know she's married to Superman, but he REALLY wants to get rid of it that fast?) AND, what's to stop Bruce from pulling a Dr. Emmett Brown and sending a telegram to Clark telling him where he is?

Hi, Clark!
Greetings from sunny pre-historic ages! Yes, I am alive and well in the past, making time with pre-Eauropean babes who REALLY don't know how to shave, and let me tell you, it's getting old, fast. So, be a good chap, go get Jay & Wally (he doesn't know about Barry yet), fire up the treadmill and COME SAVE ME from this shit! We did it for O'Brien. If we can pick that plastic idiot from the botton of the ocean after thousands of decades, you can find me! Tell ya what, I'll stir up a big 'ol campfire, get me some branches and fashion myself a old school Batsignal, shine it on the side of Mount Rushmore and hone in on that. I'll be the one with spandex slacks. Now, come get me!

Your's truly,
Bruce Muthafuggin' Wayne

Actually, I guess he MAY be trying to do that, as the last thing we saw him doing was scratching the Bat-logo onto the cave wall.

Oh, and WHO THE FUCK gives two rats shit about that Japanese Lightning-Flash teen-love story? People are dying here!

Catwoman and JSA were pretty good, tho.

Speaking of JSaa, hawkman and Hawkwoman are dead again? Seriously. He'd have better luck being Spinal Tap's drummer.

I haven't read FC 7 yet, but, I'm a Morrison fanboy and I think it's great. that said, I don't think it's for everyone.

I think DC would be best moving forward to give Grant the muliverse and let him amazingly wild and crazy and inventive stories that aren't part of the DCU proper, to prevent the Internet being clogged with whiny fanboys who hate anything complex. (visit comicbloc to see this action)

I think, pro and con, everyone should just turn the page and just say "it's over" and move on.

Speaking of bitching, Brian Hibbs had a great read on Dark Avengers and its sociopolitical origins. (www.savagecritic.com)

Upon second read through, I can see more of where Morrison was going, but I still don't agree with the means taken to get there. Mandrakk being the final threat feels tacked on and anyone who didn't read the "Superman Beyond" eyesore will wonder why there's an evil vampire demon and a vampire Ultraman suddenly showing up. I'd definitely be remiss if I didn't mention the army of Supermen that included Captain Carrot. I give major points for somehow managing to include CAPTAIN CARROT.

And I didn't realize that, unlike Grant's original idea, this did NOT end with Kamandi the Last Boy (who actually shows up a few pages before the end), but with a certain someone with a Bat shadow. I guess Bruce's demise WAS greatly exaggerated.

I stand by my original assessment, but this does feel like something that would be much friendlier in a Trade Paperback format.

I do acknowledge Grant Morrison's knack for storytelling, but over the years, I'm growing more accustomed to the Geoff Johns-style of big storytelling/bombastic artwork. I want to say that comparing Final Crisis to Blackest Night would be an interesting look, but I have a feeling that'd be like comparing apples to oranges.

I AM going to pick up Blackest Night, as I feel like I shorted myself by skipping out on Sinestro Corps.

Oddly enough, I have no desire to read blackest night or any of the "corps war" stuff after the Sinestro stuff.

All these colored rings just seem like fanfaction tripe or an idea that has probably been suggested by various writers since John Broome and it was shot down by editorial.

I guess I'm just a dork for all things Grant Morrison. I really enjoyed this series. I enjoy Geoff Johns and most of his stuff, but I think Final Crisis out did everything he tried to do in the past few years.

First off, Morrison one upped Geoff Johns using Captain Carrot. That was unexpected and kinda cool.

Morrison also gave us a better 'rebirth' of the Multiverse.

NO MORE MONITORS!

Nubia? Who the fuck remembers Nubia? I had to look her up and THEN it hit me, and that was kinda cool. You Democrats also got Obama as Superman. Marvel put him in a Spiderman issue but DC made him a Super Hero. That was cute.

Arthur Curry/Aquaman is MUTHAFUKIN back!

Earth-51 is the Kirbyverse!

Black Racer to Darkseid "...I come to all, even you." ...cue Darkseid crapping his pants.

Checkmate has access to the Multiverse.

Lex Luthor and the Secret Society totally save Superman's ass. Frankenstein Vs. Wonder Woman! Grant Morrison is a God!

Did I mention 'NO MORE MONITORS'?

This was definitely a series you gotta read a few time all the way through to even understand it all. I give it an A-.

I'd LOVE for Morrison to do the next weekly series with Checkmate searching the Multiverse looking for Batman. Yeah, I know the whole search for Ray Palmer thing turned to crap in COUNTDOWN, but with a better writer, I think it could work. Give him Rene Montoya to work with and I think it could be a decent story.

IT'S FALSE: I thought the Morrison quote was that he wanted to START the series with Kamandi and END with Anthro, which it did.

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

FC 7 was just awful. I know they are always apologist for everything, but you really want to defend this pile of shit. This is just riddiculous. The Batman letter in the earlier post will have me laughing for months.

Angel was ok. I understand they eventually had to get out of Hell and it was cool how to do it, but to push the magic reset button doesn't work for me. I really don't understand this idea that Wolfram and Hart having all this power that they won't use it later then this. I just think they are problems with the reset, but maybe we can finally get the Buffy/Angel crossover.

that was Sunshine Superman, from the Love Syndicate of Dreamworld.

Not having read Superman Beyond, I can tell you that was my exact reaction to Mandrakk and Ultraman. I felt like Final Crisis had a ton of potential, but I always felt like there were big chunks of story that I was missing, and I didn't know exactly where to look for them. I mean, obviously some of it was in Revelations or Superman Beyond, but I really didn't want to pick up extra tie-ins. I just felt like too many pieces were missing for me to really enjoy the story. A lot of people have been calling it a mess, and honestly that's probably the best description for it. Not bad, necessarily, but really unorganized and sloppy. Ultimately, though, I will say that I liked it a lot better than Secret Invasion. At least Final Crisis never actually made me angry at it.

One of these days I'll read Final Crisis again all in one sitting and see if it makes more sense then than it does now. I just don't like having to read interviews with the writer to have sense made of stories for me. I'm sure that makes me not as deep a thinker about the stories as those who "get it," and so be it. Ultimately, this felt like a waste of my time and money. I enjoyed Batman R.I.P. right up until the ending and FC had some nice spots, but I've never been a huge fan of Morrison's work so I'll have to be a little more judicious with my wallet where he's concerned.

For me, the big events of 2008 were all huge letdowns. Let's hope Blackest Night redeems DC and War of Kings looks good on Marvel's side in 2009 (but I'll be sitting Dark Reign out).

I read 1-6 again when #6 came out and thought it did read better that way. Then I read #7 last night and was confused once again. I appreciate big ideas that challenge me as a reader, but perhaps I am just not a "meta-textual" guy. At least not on this level. Regardless, I think this was a poor choice for your DC's big summer event. How would this draw in new readers when a guy who has read DC for 25 years doesn't quite get it? So what is the new status of the DCU? What exactly are the big changes? Were the deaths of the Hawks and Mr. Terrific real?

While SI ending poorly, at least I understood it from beginning to end, something you look for in a book that is suppose to appeal to as many fans as possible.

I won't get my hopes up for Blackest Night. I have been let down too many times by events at this point, and I am not that big of a GL fan anyway. As you and I discussed previously Drew, being a fan of a company's universe in general is difficult these days, but there are plenty of books put out by each company that are well worth our time.

The one thing on which I'll agree with the detractors is that Morrison might not be the best person to do a huge company-wide crossover.

While his sprawling ideas are the type of thing blockbusters are, he may not be the taste of the vast majority anymore. JLA was a long time ago.

I think, as a fan of his, Morrison is best served by doing things off on his own, be that All-Star Superman or Seaguy.

Agreed. His runs on Animal Man and All Star Supes are among my favorite.

I think in the last 20 years, Morrison has done of the best superhero books in the business, maybe more than anyone else in the period:

Animal Man
Doom Patrol (up to about 50)
JLA
one short run of Flash
All-Star Superman
DC One Million (maybe the best event books)
X-Men (I didn't read it, but people rave about it)
some of the Seven Soldiers books (YMMV on which ones)

And non-superhero stuff:

Sebastian O
St Swithins Day
We3
Seaguy
Mystery Play

And stuff liked by some, not like b others:

Marvel Boy
Skull Kill Krew
the other Seven Soldiers books
the Wildstorm stuff
Earth-2
