TNA Impact 1.29.09 from the Impact Zone in Orlando, FL.

- The show opens with a message brought to you by the Main Event Mafia. The MEM are ambassadors of wrestling who are fighting against a threat that is attempting to destroy all that they have worked for. Kurt Angle is in JJ's office. Cornette comes in to throw a fit, but it has little effect on Angle. Angle makes sure everything is in place for the show, and we head to ringside with Kevin Nash (Chet Lemon) and Booker T (Black Snow) on commentary. That is 100x better than Tenay and West. They run down the card, which is full of handicap matches. Oh joy.

- Backstage, Sharmelle is with ODB ("Obnoxious Dumb Bimbo"), who says she's "jacked up, horny, and drunk." Nice combination. Sharmelle tells her that she's got the entire KongTourage tonight as MEM have thrown out Taylor Wilde and Roxxi from the building. ODB says no problem, she's got "Jack and Jim." Scott Steiner murders and rapes the names of the Kongtourage handling the ring intros, leading into...

Handicap Match: The Kongtourage over ODB when Kong pinned her with the Implant Buster in 3:58. Poor Jack and Jim. ODB held her own while it lasted. Booker and Nash are gold on commentary.

- Backstage, Cornette is still throwing a fit. Angle can't stop talking about how great a show this is. JB steps in to "handle it," but Angle turns the tables on him by telling him he's being nice just to get a piece of Karen. How the hell does that work? JB tells him that Mick Foley is coming with backup. Angle doesn't really care. JB has feelings for Angle, so Kurt sends him out to sell MEM T-shirts. Cornette to JB: "You really handled that well. " This was funny in a demented way.

- Sharmelle is with the refs who will take on Booker in a bit. Andrew Thomas looks like he's seen a ghost, but Rudy Charles is up for it.

Handicap Match: Booker T over referees when he killed one of them with the Bookend in 3:52. Nash was amazing on commentary. The refs took their asskickings like champs. Post match, Shane Sewell runs down to get his ass kicked as well. Oops.

- Backstage, Angle and Nash discuss hot chicks. Sting drops by to threaten Angle about Against All Odds, saying he could have Sting the Friend or Sting the Foe in the 4-way match. He tells Angle to get his shit together.

- Backstage, Matt Morgan aims to make an example of Petey Williams tonight so Abyss knows what's coming his way at the PPV. Steiner rails on the crowd and Canada before the match, leading to...

Matt Morgan over Petey Williams via Carbon Footprint in 4:08. Slick Johnson actually untied Petey's arm in the middle of the match in a cool bit. Post match, Morgan and Steiner beat the hell out of Petey, leading to Consequences Creed and Eric Young making the save. However, Booker comes to the rescue of the MEM while still doing commentary! GOLD! They beat the Frontline's asses.

- Nash and Booker recap the show. Team 3-D cuts them off, and Ray says he feels sorry for Sting. He blames the situation on Angle, then goes on to cut the same promo on Sting that he cut two weeks ago. He tells him not to take this asskicking personally.

Handicap Match: Team 3D over Sting by DQ via Angle-ference in 10:28. Lots of shenanigans from MEM members kept this from being 2-on-1 for any length of time. It was good while it lasted, as Sting brought his A-game.
- Postmatch, the Mafia beats on 3D, setting them up for a table spot. Mick Foley, LAX, and Abyss make the save. Nash wisely tells the Mafia to "live to fight another day," and they bail. Well, it makes you wonder why the hell Mick Foley can't show up on time for the show.

- TNA's music department fucks up, so I can't hear most of what Foley said. He sets up some matches for tonight. Cornette tells Tenay, West, Lauren, and some other guy to go to work. Then he joins West and Tenay to announce Booker T/Shane Sewell for Against All Odds.

Weapons Match: Abyss over Scott Steiner by DQ when Steiner hit him with the lead pipe in 9:03. How utterly dumb is it to have a DQ finish to a weapons match? Apparently the idea was that only Abyss could use weapons. Steiner lays in a beatdown, but Suicide makes the save. Apparently it's now Christopher Daniels in the costume. The match had its moments.

- Brutus Magnus debuts next week. Some guys from a reality show have their promo interrupted by Beer Money. I no longer live in America so I have no idea which reality show. Storm jokes about riding their mommas and said mommas being twice as big as rodeo bulls. Hmm.

Handicap Match: Kurt Angle over LAX when he pinned Homicide with the Angle Slam in about 11 minutes. The match was good, as was expected, but there is no way Angle should go over both members of LAX cleanly.

- Backstage, we are introduced to "The Real Samoa Joe," which is Joe channeling Umaga with face paint. Interesting.

- End Show.

Wrestling Counter: 43 minutes.

** There were 43 minutes of wrestling, so that's definitely a step in the right direction. The booking was suspect for this show, however, in that the Frontline pretty much got buried today. I like how they show that MEM are not invincible, but no one from the Frontline (aka young guys who need the rub) seems to profit from it. The reintroduction of Joe is interesting, as is Chris Daniels donning the Suicide costume. Let's see where that goes.

Well, this was...hm. Huh. Wow. I'm not sure if this was a trainwreck or if it was awesome, but it was sure different.

Here are some of my favorite moments from the show:

Kurt Angle accuses Jeremy Borash of trying to get close to him (Kurt) to get to Karen. Borash denies this -- "Bros before hos -- every day of my life, man! But I do have strong feelings for you." Kurt: "You know what, JB? You creep me out."

Andrew Thomas and Rudy Charles get interviewed backstage by Sharmell (guarded by Phi Delta Slam's Big Tilly!) and Rudy Charles is pretty confident -- as he points out to "Mrs. T", the back of his TNA trading card (!) says that he's an accomplished amateur wrestler.

Booker T and Kevin Nash are sitting at the announce table during Booker's intro. Booker takes a sip of water and announces, "You see that? Booker T is drinking water right now!"

Scott Steiner takes over at the announce table for Booker's slaughter of the refs. At one point, Booker picks the comatose Thomas up off the mat, and Steiner, totally straight-faced, says about Thomas, "He's got something...no. He's unconscious." Booker kills Thomas with the Bookend, and then proceeds to not only hook the far leg for the pin, but also hooks Thomas's near leg with his own leg, just to be safe.

Matt Morgan is interviewed backstage about his upcoming match with Petey Williams and says sarcastically that he's not happy about being forced to come face-to-face -- "well, face-to-kneecap" -- with Petey. "DAMN the Main Event Mafia!" he howls. "DAMN THEM!!!"

Booker T continuing to announce while participating in a beatdown: "Booker T's beating up everyone in the ring! BOOM!"

Brother Ray gets a mic before his match, and Nash and Booker find this appalling. Nash: "No one said he could speak -- who gave him a mic? Fire her! Find out who she is and fire her!" Booker: "There's a protocol to everything -- when you just come out takin' mics, everything gets all messed up."

Booker suggests that 3D are really only eight-time champions "or so" because some of those titles were with little independent companies --"When you sell a DVD in Japan, that doesn't make you a worldwide company, I don't think."

James Storm, confronting the stars of the "Toughest Cowboy" reality show: "What makes you guys real cowboys? Just cuz you rode that [bull -- there's a bull backstage] for eight seconds? I must be the world's GREATEST cowboy, cuz I rode your momma and she's TWICE as fat!"

Yes, they actually set this up pretty clearly and stated it repeatedly (for once), so the DQ finish makes perfect sense (in the context of kind of a silly match).

So, yeah. All in all: the wrestling was really weird if not particularly good -- and sometimes pretty dull -- but there were some really funny moments. As a one time thing, I support it.

Definitely leaning towards awesome. For one, I immensely enjoyed the commentary from Booker and Nash. They can't go around burying TNA guys left and right every week, but this needs to happen again...in a limited quantity.

I know where you're coming from - it WAS made very clear, but there is just something inherently wrong with a weapons match ending in DQ. Plus, I thought the match itself was Bonehead TNA Booking 101. How is it advantageous toward Abyss if Steiner can easily escape a match with a DQ loss that hardly matters to him (Steiner)? I thought making it a proper weapons match would make more sense since that puts Steiner at a distinct disadvantage. I mean, who'd want a deranged, pissed-off monster coming at them and have no way out?

I'm more concerned that, after all the griping about Umaga as the WWE's jab at Samoa Joe, Joe is becoming Umaga.

Really?

A couple more to add to the list of great lines from the announce crew -- during the ODB match, one of them made a comment about ODB getting clotheslined "right in the Adam's apple." I also got a laugh out of them complaining when Team 3D switched out without a tag early in the match -- "you'd think after 20 times, they'd know how to tag in and out."

I seem to be alone in this thought, but the MEM doing the announcing annoyed the piss out of me. Wasn't anything they said, but Booker T's voice was horrible. Grating, annoying, and hard to understand. That ruined a lot of what was a pretty good show for me. It's like Wolfman Jack was doing pro wrestling. And he needs to learn how to breathe while talking too.

I've been thinking of late about the old "clipboard" wrestling show, where someone with authority for one night came out and made all the matches for the show, based on his or her own biases, in one long promo at the start. This was a Kurt clipboard show but without the long promo to set it up. Not bad. Lots of wrestling, and while the handicap matches and such could get old fast, for one night it worked well. Good idea to have Foley's turn come in the second hour rather than have a whole 'nother show for handicap matches and such in the faces' favor.

Booker doing commentary in one persona while participating in a beatdown in another was gold.

Don't like the facepaint on Joe, and if they're going to keep Daniels under a mask, they should have kept Curry Man. It would be better if this leads to the return of Daniels as Daniels.

I think you all are going way too easy on TNA. I hated this show, minus the bits of comedy gold from mostly Nash and Steiner.

The weapons match is a good start. If Steiner is at such a disadvantage in the match, why didn't he just attack Abyss with a weapon to get DQ'ed right away? What is Steiner's motivation to follow the rules for like 10 minutes, and THEN get DQ'ed? Did he really want the winner's purse that badly? Was it his pride telling him that he could beat Abyss without the use of weapons? This was dumb.

I also agree with Hokienautic that Booker was utterly annoying on commentary. I could not understand him, and he talked over Nash the whole time. I may dislike Don West, but at least I know what he is saying.

The Kurt Angle/LAX match was largely boring, and the booking was just another nail in the coffin of a tag team. LAX looked like tools and I now can't buy Hernandez having a chance in a singles match especially when he and Homicide together can't even beat Angle.

This was a brutal show to watch, although I have to admit that the spoilers made me interested in the show.

I got some chuckles out of steiner switching from his Big Poppa Pump gravely voice to his giddy squeaky Scotty Steiner voice on commentary. And Booker T continuing to commentate while in the ring.
Just like WWE, TNA has the wrestling talent to put on good shows but the metality of the bookers/owners is holding the product down.

I hated Booker T on commentary. I get the feeling that the producers of the show knew that "The MEM Impact Show" was totally tanking, so they got rid of "Chet Lemon" and "Black Snow" halfway through the show and returned West and Tenay to the desk.

I keep thinking that when Kevin Nash retires from wrestling, he'd make a great commentator...he's very funny and can be insightful...when he's not paired up with idiots like Booker T.

What's Jim Cornette's role in the company, anyhow...isn't he supposed to be some form of authority? If so, why didn't he do something about Angle taking over? I mean, he just moped and sulked there like a sad little dog throughout the show.

Suicide....yawn. I already miss Curry Man, not as much as I miss Christopher Daniels. And yes, I know Curry and Suicide are portrayed by Daniels.

I think it's just WWE's cutesy way of getting around the accusation of piped-in chants. If it's part of his music, they can say it's just that, while WCW was doing it in the middle of matches and such.
