Okay, I'll start the thread, although I only saw the Rumble Match itself.

Swagger d Hardy
Melina d Phoenix
Cena d JBL
Edge d Hardy
Orton wins the Rumble

Since I only saw the Rumble Match that's all I will comment on.

It was underwhelming.

- The HBK get thrown over the rope and hang on spot was way over used (although Rey came up with some nice versions).

- The ring was way to crowded for most of the match. I'm not sure if this is because a lot of the big names came in early, but none of the bigs like Kane, Taker or the Big Show cleared it up late. It felt like a cluster fuck and on top of that the cameras missed a lot of the big throw out spots.

- The match was way too predictable.

- I was also sad to see the Warlord's record broken.

Things I liked ...

- Seeing RVD again, only to have him throw a chain of the sorriest looking hot clotheslines ever seen. Plus he had a nice elimination spot.

- The Miz coming in and making sure he went after every big name in the ring.

- The Show/CM Punk spot, although it would have been better if they hadn't done a thousand hang on spots before that.

- Rhodes vs Goldust.

All in all not a bad Rumble, but not great either. Probably forgettable in the long run.

The other two big developments not mentioned in your post was HBK hitting both JBL and Cena with Sweet Chin Music and then rolling JBL onto Cena (which he kicked out of) and Matt turning on Jeff and going full heel. The Jeff/Edge match was ok, but the rest of the show kinda stunk.

Ah, but Big Show did the right thing and stuck with his elimination instead of moving on like everybody else did. It was a nice subtle touch.

I also enjoyed JTG and John Morrison kicking each other from the HBK position.

The Mysterio save by stepping on Miz and Morrison was pretty special too. Shades of Matt Hardy and MFer Shannon Moore.

Speaking of, did anybody NOT see Matt Hardy turning after about thirteen minutes of him emoting after his loss?

Forgettable Rumble, but the World and WWE title matches were booked awesomely. I liked the show. Glad Matt is a heel again.

Interesting, because I thought the Rumble match was awesome and saved what was a pretty blah undercard. I particulary loved when Big Show did his elimination save like everyone else.

Swagger vs. Hardy was good for what it was but not great. Melina has looked like crap ever since her return. Sad. Cena and JBL was pretty boring save for the HBK stuff. Jeff and Edge were working at half speed in their match, and ref Scott Armstrong only made me miss Jim Korderas more and more.

An above average PPV mostly because of the Rumble match.

So who broke Warlord's record and how? I'm assuming Santino?

Also, with Matt turning heel, does this point to an Edge/Matt-Christian/Jeff feud?

I didn't get to watch the PPV itself but this interesting and a bit ironic.

May be he's capitalizing on his WWE.com "Superstar of the Day" spot. He actually did something noteworthy on his day.

Enjoyed the Rumble, but thought that it would have been better had Legacy "quietly" triple teamed some of the jobbers as the match went along and have JR and King not notice at first, but have to have the split screen to see how "so and so" got eliminated and see that Legacy was working together only to be revealed as they tried to get the Undertaker out at the end which was the first or most organized time they tried it.

I "called" the Matt Hardy turn during the pre-show when I saw the Jeff/Edge buildup. The first thing I thought was that the most interesting culprit would have been Matt (or a returning Christian). It was pretty cemented once he lost the opener and we got the looooooong shot of him emoting over it.

Also called HBK punking out both JBL and Cena with him putting JBL on top, but thought that would be the end of the match and that HBK would end up in the Rumble, win and then challenge JBL at Wrestlemania. I suppose we'll still get HBK/JBL at WM, which will be more paletable since it won't be for the World Title.

Enjoyable show, and looking forward to RAW tomorrow night. I guess I'll also have to check out SmackDown for the first time in a loooooong time for the Hardyz feud since it's so "odd" to see a real brother turning on another real brother after seeing so many fake brothers turn on each other over the years ;-)

edit: Also liked Beth Phoenix's beating Melina over the back of the head with Melina's own boot! Ditto for Santino getting the crowd to stop their "SAN-TI-NO" chant during the women's match so as to not to take over their time, which made it even more hee-larious when he was eliminated so fast in the Rumble. The guys in the ringside seats with the S-A-N-T-I-N-O signs barely had time to get their signs up before he was gone!

Okay, but not great show. slight thumbs up. 7/10.

I have been hoping for some weird shuffling of the Hardys/EC that leads to some kind of parajes incredible match with like Matt/Edge vs Jeff/Christian or something like that. I wonder know if we might get some kind of 3 way with matt vs jeff vs edge for mania.

move of the night was Beth hitting Melina with Melina's own foot. that's one limber girl.

I second the opinion that there were just too many guys in the ring for most of the Rumble match. Kozlov was the only guy who eliminated several people upon entering, if I remember correctly. I expected the entrances of Taker and Big Show to bring a rush of eliminations, but no dice.

Anyone else think Jack Swagger looks like Biff from Back to the Future?

EDIT: I actually could see Jericho vs Taker at Mania originating from Taker eliminating Jericho. I know Show eliminated Taker, but they've done that match a million times already, and Jericho's character would absolutely start a feud with Taker over a Rumble elimination. Plus, it'd be a fresh feud - first time they've ever feuded, I believe? I think the build-up to that match would be pretty fun, too.

I also "called" the Matt Hardy turn, back on 12/20/08.

http://the-w.com/thread.php/id=37094#400845

My complaint is they did the turn 6 months too soon. It doesn't make sense why Matt would turn on Jeff now and not get himself the WWE Title in the process. Instead he turns on Jeff so Edge, his most hated enemy ever, benefits from it. And in the process, they killed Jeff Hardy's title run in his first defense. Fucking stupid.

Beth vs. Melina was pretty great, I thought. Never thought Melina would win the title back, never thought Rosa Mendez wouldn't interfere, and it was a real good match to boot. Not nearly the caliber of their I Quit match at One Night Stand last year, but the best Divas match on PPV in a good while, which is what Melina and Beth together are good at delivering.

And I say the Rumble was awesome. The main eventers came early and often, which was great. Everyone worked hard. Triple H took just about everyone's finisher and Orton gave out a bunch of RKOs including a killer one on Rey from a springboard. Usually it ends up with a few guys and one obvious winner but this year by the time Show entered at number 30, there were a half dozen viable potential winners in the ring and another half dozen guys in there with them. It was the busiest Rumble in years with the most guys in the ring at once. The first four minutes with Rey, Morrison, Carlito, and MVP (who the crowd LOVED) was the fastest, most entertaining first minutes of the Rumble I can recall. Santino broke the record for fastest elimination, RVD turned out to be the big surprise this year no one could have predicted, and Randy Orton, the hottest star in the company, wins it for the first time while Legacy earned their keep in helping him win. (Now Orton can't be fired because he has a guaranteed main event title shot at WrestleMania.) Great, great Rumble match. Really well booked and well-executed. Loved it.

I don't know if it's been posted in the Wrestler thread or not, but Mickey Rourke called out Chris Jericho at the SAG awards tonight.

Dead on. Santino went in and immediately was clotheslined by Kane. Lawler said he was in the ring for maybe 1.5 seconds, breaking Warlord's 2 sec. record.

It was an OK PPV, saved IMO by a good rumble.

-Didn't see Matt Hardy/Swagger. But I heard it was a decent match and that Swagger has a lot of upside in him.

- Melina/Beth was a little sloppy for my taste. I liked how Beth made Melina kick herself in the back of the head with the leglock, but other times it seemed like they got their signals mixed. Finish was pretty underwhelming (no Rosa interference- so what happened to her?).

-JBL/Cena was a bit of a snoozer. The HBK double-superkick finish that wasn't pick things up a bit towards the end, but otherwise it felt like any other JBL/Cena match I've seen several times already.

-Edge/Jeff Hardy was a good match, better than any other regular match tonight. Good chemistry between the two and I like the dive Jeff gave Chavo onto the table (though it looked like he almost slipped off the ladder and miss the table). The 'shock' finish with Matt turning on his brother was interesting because I was expecting Christian. Though thinking back to the last Smackdown I saw a couple of weeks ago (I think), didn't Edge said this exact thing About Matt being jealous and wanting to hurt Jeff right to his face? Edge=psychic.

-The rumble itself was really fun to watch. Yeah, it seemed overfilled at times and yes, too many people were 'skinning the cat' on the ropes, but it never felt boring. With the expection of 3-4 people (like Santino and Dolph Ziggler), I felt that everyone that went in had a legit shot to win and did some decent damage. I haven't watched too many rumbles in recent years, but in comparing this one to the ones I saw in the 90's- early 00's, this one had far fewer 'funny' or 'gimmickly' spots and definitely a lot less spots where people were just standing around. It looked like every second of the rumble, there was action going on in the ring. The only thing was the final four (Legacy vs. HHH), since from there it was easy to predict the ending.

Overall, a fine finish to the PPV, but most of the rest just fell a bit like watching a regular Raw/ Smackdown episode. Thumbs slighly up.

This just doesn't make any sense at all. It's obviously the logic they are going to use, but it's ridiculous. Vince McMahon can't fire an employ that kicked him in the face because he's due a title match? That's stupid beyond words and is why I hate the "I'm the owner and you're fired" bullshit that has dominated WWF/WWE TV for a decade (a decade!).

I really hope they set this precedent with this stupid, stupid logic and then are caught in a predicament when a Rumble winner really does do something to get fired or suspended and the future.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

I'm completely disgusted right now. I didn't pay for the show (either as a PPV or as a ticketholder), so I can only imagine what I'd be feeling if I had parted with money.

Couldn't agree more with Orquiola re: the WWE title match. Turning Matt now is fucking stupid. There is no logical rationale for the turn (Jealousy over Jeff's title win? Nope, the attacks started a month before Jeff won the title.) and the combo of jobbing Jeff/turning Matt will relegate the Hardys to a mid-card WM match against each other that will be completely overshadowed by the title matches, MITB, and the potential marquee HBK/UT match. Both of them (Matt for carrying ECW all year, Jeff for his drawing potential that is now being wasted and sincere efforts at reform) deserved better. Down the road, this might have made sense, but only after Jeff was firmly established as a champion (which would have easily been done if they'd paid off the year-long storyline with Trips by having Trips put Jeff over at WM). As is, fail.

And to see this happen to Jeff while someone who is just as big a (if not a bigger) serial fuck-up as him, Randy Orton - let's see: at least two steroid busts, a public "suspension" for insubordination, "gifts" left in Divas' gym bags, several incidents of physical altercations with fans (including one just a week or two ago) - gets pushed to a win and a slot in the two marquee events of the year (the latter for the second year running) makes me sick. It's hard to believe coming from me, but this is a worse example of politics being played than even the days when Trips had a stranglehold on the main event, because Trips (for all his faults) never acted like an immature douchebag out of the ring the way Orton does.

The fact that the booking in the World title match was pitch-perfect doesn't do much to take the sour taste out of my mouth. Simply put: Tonight's booking has me seriously considering not watching WM for the first time in years.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Well, I've long since gotten tired of the spot where Undertaker/Kane/Big Show storms the ring and throws out a bunch of midcarders who have been milling around waiting to be eliminated. So, good on them for avoiding that this year.

Wish Morrison had lasted longer in the Rumble, though. I'd rather have seen him in the final four than ... anyone who actually *was* in the final four, come to that.

Maybe "Wow, even though that didn't make a lick of sense, and everyone at home knew what was going down as soon as Matt grabbed a chair, that was still a pretty awesome moment. And a pretty great job by the announcers by just laying out for the segment."

Very comparable to the JBL/HBK stuff on TV - the underlining stuff may not work and the result may not work, but the moment itself very much worked.

I wonder if it's the controversial out of ring actions that are what keep him at the top in the first place? Duecing in wrestlers bags, smoking weed backstage at PPVs, re-injuring himself popping wheelies on his bike when he should be carefully rehabilitating, being very public about having more violent videogames on store shelves. The dude is a mad heel off hours and it only seems to get him more over. This discussion of Orton's backstage actions have been done alot on this board as well as another board I visit. I'm not condoning the behavior but he seems to generate both a strong positive and negative feedback by the casuals and the smarks, and strong feedback equals money in the WWE.

I'm sure we can all agree that the people who work the hardest and stay clean should get the big pushes, but wrestling doesn't always work that way. It's who gets a bigger reaction. Orton causes a big reaction constantly with his douchebagginess. Fans haven't lost in interest in him since.....ever.

Kane is one of the best big men in the business, but the writers just can't think of anything good for him, so we get this and the Katie Vick angle. It'll be a shame if he goes, but I won't weep for him.
