WORST CAREER ACHIEVEMENT
-Uwe Boll

It's been a long time since I've seen a year full of as much crap as 2008. For every "Dark Knight" there was seemingly a dozen Friedberg/Seltzer projects. I would love for Friedberg and Seltzer to sweep the Razzies this year, but I think those idiots would see it as a badge of honor.

No, if any movie should sweep this year's awards and get skewered repeatedly before never being spoken of EVER again, it's Paris Hilton's pathetic vanity project disguised as a feature film. The fact that it ever saw the light of day is incredibly sad.

I grow sadder with another Ben Kingsley nomination. A formerly great Oscar winner, Kingsley has rapidly been reduced to a Razzie staple. See you on the list next year, Sir Ben.

If the Razzies are going into the business of lifetime achievement awards, can we get Eddie Murphy for next year? I love him to death, but Pluto Nash, Norbit, Meet Dave, The Haunted Mansion, Daddy Day Care, and Holy Man are definitely a lifetime worth of crap.

FUN FACT: My quote from last year's Razzie Winners thread...

Between "Meet the Spartans", "Strange Wilderness", Paris Hilton's "The Hottie and the Nottie", and Larry the Cable Guy's "Witless Protection", you've already got a strong field on contenders for next year's "Worst Picture" category. And it's only FEBRUARY!

Huh...I had completely forgotten about "Strange Wilderness"...

I'm shocked at the lack of Punisher: War Zone, but I'm willing to accept it at a sixth place position when looking at some of the stinkers up there.

I actually found Disaster Movie to be much better than Meet The Spartans or Epic Movie or Date movie. This was largely based on Nicole Parker's work as the Enchanted Princess. She was so great in this movie.

Considering the "world's worst wide release ever" reception it has gotten, I'm surprised that 'Delgo' didn't get any noms. As for who is in the running, I get the feeling that most of the awards are going to be 'won' by Paris Hilton and Uwe Boll. I wonder how Michael Bay will feel about that. Or is he still blowing stuff up and saying "awesome" everytime (youtube.com)?

Me too...how did THAT not get nominated???

While I recognize the horror that was The Love Guru (as a whole), there were at least some pretty big laughs in the movie for me, and it was nowhere near the utter crap that was Drillbit Taylor, Mummy 3, or Leatherheads.

I remember hearing how much of a bomb it was. No one went to see. That's the only reason I can think it wasn't nominated, no one knew it sucked because they never got a chance to see it. It was in and out so fast, I don't remember seeing one trailer for it.

My predictions

WORST PICTURE- The Happening- It was just awful, while trying to actually be a good movie.

WORST ACTOR- Mark Wahlberg (The Happening, Max Payne)- He tried to calm down a plastic plant, and did that badly!

WORST ACTRESS -Paris Hilton (The Hottie and the Nottie)I didn't see any of the movies involved.

WORST SUPPORTING ACTOR- Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia!) It's the only one I saw and I didn't think he did to bad, except for when he sang.

WORST SUPPORTING ACTRESS- Paris Hilton (Repo: The Genetic Opera)No reason really

WORST SCREEN COUPLE- Eddie Murphy IN Eddie Murphy (Meet Dave)- They seem to always try and give Eddie an award.

WORST PREQUEL, REMAKE, RIP-OFF, OR SEQUEL- Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull- I didn't see any of them, but according to South Park it was pretty bad

WORST DIRECTOR- M. Night Shyamalan (The Happening)- God I don't like his movies, especially this one.

WORST SCREENPLAY- The Happening- I hated this movie

I actually kinda liked The Happening.

Would I call it "good"? Well, probably not. But come on, it really wasn't that bad. It was a mediocre film all the way around. I don't understand the pure vitriol towards this film, unless it's Shyamalan fatigue carryover.

The Happening had Zooey Deschanel in it, so it could not possibly be the worst of the year.

(I concur that Twilight was robbed. That was, without exaggeration, the worst movie I've ever seen. I really would have liked to see Tom Cruise up for Worst Supporting Actor for Tropic Thunder too, but it seems like everyone else in the world liked that piece of garbage.)

The new Indiana Jones movie was an hour and a half of entertaining, though certainly not the best Indiana Jones, followed by 30 minutes of 'why the hell did I pay 8 dollars to see this bunk'?

And Tom Cruise was horrific in Tropic Thunder. I like the movie otherwise, but I guess you need to have parts in movies where you just up and stop laughing.

Count me in on the list of people who didn't like the Cruise part in Tropic Thunder. Just seemed to me to be in there just to shock people than actually be funny. Movie itself was just average imo, some good laughs but not great.

Unless I missed it, not a single theatre in the Hamilton area showwd it - so I really don't think it's a bomb, per se. It obviously didn't have the support of the studio, but still.

I really wanted to see it, too.

Not sure why Ben Kingsley does roles like LOVE GURU. I can understand why he did "THUNDERBIRDS" - during the directors commentary, it was mentioned that he wanted to do a movie that his grandkids could watch, since most of his fare has been for mature audiences. But this? I'm a Leafs fan through and through, but this was crap.

On the note of Delgo, I've never even heard of it until reading about it here. Having done a little homework, here's what I learned through THE INTERNET.

Budget: $40,000,000
Gross: $511,900

That's 1.2%. By comparison, Pluto Nash did 4.4% ($4,400,000 to a $100m budget). Realistically, Pluto Nash is still the biggest bomb in recent history, but statistically, it isn't.

It was distributed by Freestyle Releasing and produced by Fathom Studios. It began production in 1999.

It opened against The Day the Earth Stood Still, and other movies in the box office of note were Twilight, Bolt, and Frost/Nixon (as was Punisher: Warzone, but that's not of note to me ). I do remember hearing about all of those movies.

Perhaps the presence of Disney/Pixar made it too easy to not notice? AHA! Here we go! The Delgo Wikipedia entry states 'During the movie's production, Fathom Studios created a viral marketing campaign. In 2001, they created a teaser stating, "From a Studio Nowhere Near Hollywood ... From People You've Never Heard of ... Comes a Myth for the New Millennium ... Delgo". The teaser was placed on five message boards and soon spread to many more'. Take Wiki's word for what it's worth, but after searching YouTube, I've found ZERO TV spots.

EDIT: Also, according to many critics, the movie wasn't that good (and that's being generous to the film itself, not the critics). I've never seen it and can not say whether it's bad or good. However, not having the backing of a major studio and an ad campaign that was almost nonexistent by the time the movie was released seven years past it's inception are good enough clues for me as to why the movie flew like a gazebo.
