TONIGHT: Mr. McMahon returns to Raw (ironically, on Martin Luther King day) for the first time since the injury he suffered on the June 23rd show. What will he have to say and will he reinstate Chris Jericho? Plus, the contract signing for the Royal Rumble match between JBL and John Cena will also be tonight. Hopefully, the feud between Rey Mysterio and Mike Knox will come to an end in their match tonight. CM Punk will challenge William Regal for his IC Title AGAIN, this time in a no-DQ match. Expect Royal Rumble hype with the PPV six days away and perhaps more entrants announced for the match itself as well.

-WWE Open.

-A short Martin Luther King tribute video aired. Long Live The Dream.

-Six months ago, Vince McMahon went crazy and gave away a ton of money. Then....things started happening. Like the stage falling apart. And Vince getting crushed.

-Raw Open.

-Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler introd the show live from The Allstate Arena in Chicago. They plugged Mr. McMahons return tonight.

(1) Six-Man Battle Royal: Starring Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, Kane, Santino Marella, Cody Rhodes, Ted Dibiase
I hate this Rumble preview battle royal crap they seemingly do every year....it waters down the Rumble itself. They adjusted the Priceless theme and somehow, it keeps getting worse.

Kane went right after Orton and sidewalk slammed him as the lights dimmed down. Then they came back up. Team Priceless worked over Kane. Santino tried to form an alliance with Priceless, but Dibiase tossed him at :57. Kofi and Rhodes were eliminated in short order, by Dibiase and Kane respectively. Kane threw out Dibiase, who held on. Orton was getting choked out in the ropes by Kane when Dibiase came from behind and propelled himself into Kane. All three went over, but only one of Ortons feet hit the outside, so he won. They made a big deal about Ted sacrificing himself for Orton.

Winner: Orton, at 1:51. Ridiculously short. Like, totally not believable at all.

-Still to come, Cena and JBL will have their contract signing tonight.

[Commercial Break]

-They showed the Chicago skyline and then went backstage to where CM Punk was warming up for his match with William Regal tonight.

(2) Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix
After a lock-up, Beth wasnt feeling a clean break. Kelly (who celebrated her 22nd birthday earlier in the week) had a half-Blackhawks jersey on of Jonathan Toews. Kelly did her usual single-boot flip, but almost lost her balance on the landing. Fans chanted Kelly, Kelly, but Beth finished her quickly with the Glam Slam.

Winner: Beth, at 1:10. Quick and decisive, as it shouldve been.

-Orton and Dibiase were talking backstage with Orton saying what happened tonight is what should happen at the Rumble. Cody Rhodes came in with some bad news, saying Sim Snuka and Manu were in Stephanie McMahons office earlier and the rumor is that Stephanie is going to fire Orton. Well see about that said the viper.

[Commercial Break]

-They showed a picture of George W. Bush receiving a WWE Title from World Wrestling Entertainment earlier in the week. They noted it is his last day in office.

-In a related note, Mr. McMahon returns tonight! Plus, Rey Mysterio faces Mike Knox.

-Beth Phoenix was walking backstage when Santino came up to her and congratulated her on the win. He said he had a present for her. It was Beths crazy fan. Santino said since she cant come to events as a fan, Santino decided to giver her an internship. She said her dream is to become a WWE Diva and she will do anything Beth asks. Santino asked, please, can we keep her? Beth said shed think about it then walked away. Marella tried to give Rosa Mendes some tips on how to impress Beth: One that she can do tonight! Then they walked out of camera range.

-Stephanie was on the phone in her office when Randy Orton walked in. He complimented her on her handling of the Chris Jericho situation last week. Steph butted in and said she wasnt going to fire Orton. Steph told him she wasnt going to fire him and to stop sucking up to her. Orton said he was just being nice and wasnt worried about being fired. He said if anyone needs to worry about being fired tonight, its her. Orton said the only reason she has this job is because shes Vince McMahons daughter. He said shed be a complete nobody if her last name wasnt McMahon. She slapped him and they had a stare-down. Then Orton walked away.

[Commercial Break]

-Next Monday is the World Television Premiere of 12 Rounds, John Cenas movie. I think they mean the trailer, but they didnt specify that it wasnt the actual movie.

(3) CM Punk vs. William Regal- No Disqualification match for the Intercontinental Title
Punk was announced as being in the Royal Rumble this Sunday. No singlet for Regal this week. Crowd was loud and proud for Punk. Flying leg kick by Punk but it didnt even get a one-count. Punk then kicked Regal in the chest thrice and Regal kicked out at two. He went to the outside and Punk went after him. That was a mistake as Regal got Punk up for a suplex. Punk got out of it with a knee to the head and threw Regal into the ring post. Back in the ring for another near-fall. Pure pwnage from Punk this far. He worked an arm-bar in mid-ring. Regal reached the rope to try and get a rope break but Punk wisely shouted I dont gotta break the hold.....Im gonna break his arm! Then they went to break.

[Commercial Break]

Back from break, Regals arm was not in fact broken. Punk had Regal tied up in the ropes with a submission move out of break and Layla even tried her hand to break the hold. Regal took over soon after, kicking Punks head into the ring post. Full-nelson was locked in, but Punk quickly broke the hold. The two traded forearms to the face and Punk got a twisting back-first to the head, but that didnt faze Regal too much. However, a kick straight to the head did. Running knee to Regals head in the corner, but instead of a bulldog, Regal dropped Punk on his head with a suplex. Knees to the face by Regal. Regal set Punk on the top rope and Punk kicked Regal off after the Brit came up for a suplex. Punk, though, missed a cross-body. Soon after, he put Regal on his shoulders for the GTS. Regal tried to elbow out to no avail. Punk got the pin and the strap.

Winner: Punk, at 9:57. Solid match, and great crowd heat. Wouldve loved another five minutes or so, as even at 10:00, it was shorter than I thought it would be.

They stayed with the Punk celebration quite a while and showed several replays.

-They showed highlights of John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels from last Monday night. Their contract signing is next.

[Commercial Break]

-Jerry Lawler was in the ring to moderate the contract signing. JBL came out first, with his employee Shawn Michaels. Then Cena made his entrance to a loud ovation. Neither man sat down as Lawler asked who wanted to go first. Cena put his John Hancock on the paper, then JBL did. JBL took the mic and said since its official, the reign of JBL is just a matter of time. Cena replied simply with, Youre a scumbag. He then told JBL to get over himself and wanted to talk to HBK. JBL said things were between him and Cena, not Michaels. JBL reiterated that Michaels will be in his corner at the Rumble to support him, which will be his only function. Cena said JBL wasnt going to be paying HBK a bunch of money to just stand in his corner at the Rumble. Cena said he tried to support Shawns decision, but he and the people just dont understand. He said last week he didnt wrestle an employee, he wrestled the main-eventer, the Showstopper. Cena said Michaels still has it. He said Michaels proved last week he can make an honest living in the ring doing what he loves. Cena told HBK he was Mr. Wrestlemania, not JBLs puppet. JBL agreed with Cena and said HBK isnt a puppet and he knows he can still go. JBL said all his employees work for him because they are paid handsomely and no one cares what Cena thinks. JBL said hell win next Sunday and go to Wrestlemania as champion and when HBK helps him this Sunday, hell get a large (large) paycheck. JBL said its not personal, but a business decision. HBK took the mic and shouted Shut Up!

HBK said the fact that he has to take money from a disgusting individual like JBL makes him sick. HBK said he hates himself when he looks in his mirror in the morning and he hates himself for it, but hell continue to do it. Michaels turned his attention to Cena and said hes not 20 anymore and has plenty of responsibility at home that needs to be paid for. He said Cena doesnt know him and that people can judge him all they want, but hes going to do what he has to do. He said if taking money from JBL puts an asterisk by his name or costs Cena a championship, then so be it. Cena said it doesnt matter what HBK has or doesnt have, and said the fans want to see the real HBK, not what hes become. Cena said HBK has another choice. Cena said at the Rumble, he will have to choose: Will he really be the guy to help make JBL the next World Champion? Cena said he knows when the chips are down that HBK isnt going to help JBL. HBK said he was sorry Cena felt that way and the two grabbed each other as JBL took a shot at Cena. HBK tried to superkick him but Cena dodged it and ran into a big boot from JBL. As HBK walked up the ramp, JBL gave Cena a clothesline from hell. They showed a replay of the assault. Great promos, but it seemed like HBK and Cena were talking about two different things; even though Michaels CAN go in the ring (like Cena was saying), he still needs a lot more money than wrestling will give (what HBK was trying to say).

[Commercial Break]

-Kevin Grevioux, star of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, was shown on camera at ringside. Ive never heard of him.

(4) Rey Mysterio vs. Mike Knox
After Rey came out, Todd Grisham caught up to Knox backstage and asked what he has against Rey Mysterio. Knox said he didnt have anything against Rey Mysterio. Grisham asked why does he continue to attack Rey then. Knox said he doesnt have a reason why.

Rey back-dropped Knox over the top rope, but Knox came in and clotheslined Rey in the chest- from his knees. Big boot by Knox. He then applied a bear-hug on Rey. Rey fought out and it became clear that Knox was bleeding from the mouth (or lip). Rey fought at Knox on the apron, then sloppily set Knox up for a 619. Knox caught him before he could do damage and catapulted Rey throat-first into the top rope. Knox then put the boots to Rey in the corner, so much so that referee Marty Elias called for the DQ.

Winner: Mysterio, at 2:31. I guess its NOT over.

Knox hit his finisher on Rey after the match.

-Steph walked back into her office where she found Chris Jericho sitting on the couch. She hissed at him, asking him what he was doing there. How did he get in? Jericho said hes not leaving and apparently, hes been talking to Vince again. He said Vince told him he can plead his case to come back the moment Vince gets to the arena. He warned Steph that he wasnt going to hold anything back.

[Commercial Break- During the break, I went back to WWE.com and noticed McMahons reality checks on the top of the page; theyre Chuck Norris-like sayings that are kinda funny (example: Mr. McMahon doesnt make change for a dollar; he inspires it and Mr. McMahon never holds a grudge; he has assistants for that.]

-The Smackdown Rebound aired.

-The Miz and John Morrison were in the ring. Miz said he wanted to commemorate winning the Rumble this Sunday by beating the winner of the first Royal Rumble, Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Morrison said Duggan can choose which one he faces, but then Cryme Tyme interrupted. Finally, follow-up! Shad said Duggan is on special assignment so they decided to come out instead. He said theyre in historical times, what with Barack Obama being inaugurated tomorrow. He said they wanted to start their path to the tag titles tonight. Miz asked why they thought they deserved a title shot. Morrison claimed they were worse than the Cubs. JTG said theyd be happy to beat the champs tonight to earn a title shot. Morrison said when it comes to beating those two: Yes we can.

(5) The Miz & John Morrison vs. Cryme Tyme
Morrison took it to Shad, including hitting a knee to the head. Shad came back with a few clotheslines. Flapjack by Shad. Miz interfered on behalf of Morrison, but JTG nailed Morrison and Shad hit the finisher on Morrison for the win.

Winners: Cryme Tyme, at 1:22. Another too-short match.

-They showed Steph and Ortons confrontation from earlier tonight.

-Mr. McMahon returns tonight.

[Commercial Break]

-Time for some Royal Rumble match stats. DYK: Austin has eliminated 36 men all-time, a record. 598 men have been in the Rumble. This is Kanes 11th Rumble in a row. Chyna is the only woman to ever have competed in a Rumble match. 62:12 is the record for longest appearance in a Rumble, held by Rey Mysterio. :02 is the shortest time in the Rumble, The Warlord. Didnt it used to be Bushwhacker Luke? I guess the official time is time spent in the ring, not the time starting as soon as you come out. That always confuses me. Steve Austin has won a record three Rumbles. Entrant #1 and Entrant #30 have provided the same number of winners. Four men have won the Rumble from #27. Since 1993, 70% of winners have won the title they challenged for at WrestleMania.

-Cody Rhodes was talking to Mickie James again backstage. He asked why hed take career advice from Mickie. Mickie said because shes been a multiple time Womens Champ. He turned around and was face-to-face with Goldust. Goldust said its been a while and Cody asked what he wanted. Goldust gave Cody a DVD, telling him to watch it and learn what its like to be a champion, instead of being with Randy Orton. He mentioned Ric Flair, Sting and even their dad. It was the Starrcade DVD. Cody said theres even a 2-of-3 falls match of Steve Austin vs. a young Dustin Rhodes. Cody said he teamed with Orton so he wouldnt become a nobody like Goldust. He said when they make a Cody Rhodes DVD, hell be sure to send him and The Dream a copy. Great back-and-forth there.

-A limo pulled up backstage. Lawler speculated that it was Mr. McMahon.

[Commercial Break]

-Jillian Hall was in the ring singing. They showed highlights of Melina getting attacked last week by Beth Phoenix and the crazed fan.

(6) Jillian Hall vs. Melina
Ladies and gentlemen, this is likely YOUR Raw main event. As Jillian beat on Melina in the corner, Santino, Beth and Rosa walked to the ring. Jillian got a one-count. Jillian tried a sidewalk slam and it looked like crap. But she hit it at least. Jillian screamed in Melinas ear in the corner, then put some shoulders into the gut. Melina out of the corner hit her version of Code Red (again, not pretty) for the win.

Winner: Melina, at 1:22. After the match, Rosa Mendes attacked Melina. Beth then came into the ring and gave Melina a Glam Slam. Then she did some trash talk. Beth walked to the back past Santino and Rosa. I dont think she appreciated the help.

-Dolph Ziggler was talking to Candice Michelle about being in the Rumble. He turned around and ran into Vince McMahon. Vince introduced himself to Ziggler, but Dolph looked too nervous to say his name to Vince. Mr. McMahon walked away as Candice laughed at Dolph.

[Commercial Break]

-Cole and Lawler threw it to clips of earlier tonight when Cena confronted HBK.

-Mr. McMahon made his triumphant return, his swagger back and looking well. He said he was glad to be back, then called for Jericho to come out. Jericho made a case for himself. He asked for Vince to rehire him and reinstate him in the Royal Rumble. He said Vince needs to make things right on his show. Vince said Steph can be impulsive at times and Jericho said shes actually regressed as GM. Vince then called for her to come out. She obliged. Vince told Steph he didnt want to go over her head but he is thinking about reinstating Jericho. Then he said but Im not! Vince then said he wasnt going to fire Stephanie either. He said he and Steph are going to run Raw together. Vince asked Steph is she wants to give Jericho a second chance. Steph took a walk and thought about it. She told him if he really wants his job back, apologize. He didnt bite, so she called for security. He stopped her and apologized. She asked him to say it a little louder. He kinda did. She said hed have to do better than that. Jericho said he was sorry he spoke out of turn against her and was very robotic in the way he talked. Steph said it was good, but not good enough. She said hes been calling the fans hypocrites for months, and its only right that he apologize to them. They chanted on your knees, and Steph acknowledged it. She told him he would need to do that. So he slowly bent down and got on both knees with a look of utter disdain on his face. He said he needed to explain something to the fans and said that he has a gift, and it may seem like hes being arrogant at times but he knows hes said a lot of mean things about the fans but he said if he has said anything that offended anyone, he apologizes. Stephanie said she would see Jericho at the Rumble and told him to walk up the ramp so the fans could tell him what they really thought of him. As he left, Vince said he loved to see Jericho grovel like that and that it warms his cockles. He got a hug from Steph, but Randy Orton came out.

Orton got a mic and said another apology was in order. He told Vince about Steph slapping her and said ever since Steph popped out some kids, shes become worthless. Steph made a move toward Randy but Vince held her back and she left the ring. Vince, in classic Vince inflection, asked Randy who the hell he thinks he is. Orton should be privileged to be in Mr. McMahons universe. Vince talked about his dad, Cowboy Bob Orton being a mediocre rassler until Vince came along, put the spotlight on him and put him in the hall-of-fame. Vince said if it werent for him, Orton would be a gym teacher in St. Louis. He then told Randy to apologize to him. Holy over-run. Vince asked again for an apology, or else. He said if Randy didnt apologize, hed terminate him on the spot. Orton said Vince didnt want to do that sir. Vince verbally wound up and got Randy Orton, youre.... out before Randy slapped him. Orton had a surprised look on his face. He then booted Vince in the head and punted him. Orton looked incredulous as agents Johnny Ace and Dean Malenko came out, with Ace verbally telling Orton to get out of the ring. Medics and Stephanie McMahon came out as well. Punt looked nasty on replay. Cody and Teddy met with Orton in the ring and they finally left. Were out at 11:18.

Loved the Cody/Dustin segment.

I thought for sure Steph was eating an RKO.

I just can't deal with Vince and especially Steph as faces.

It took for-fucking-ever to get to that finish but by God, it was worth it.

Orton should have kicked Stephanie as well. In for a penny, in for a pound.

I thought she was taking a kick of her own for a minute there. She was bent over in position for it, and they were showing Randy right behind her. Oh well.

Sgt. Slaughter would have gotten to the ring to save Vince before the death kick. Fired him a week too soon I guess.
Here's a problem for Cody Rhodes when compared to a Randy Orton: Orton's father was pretty much a mid-card wrestler, thus he could achieve success surpassing that of his father. Cody Rhodes won't ever achieve the level of the American Dream. Thus, he will always be in his shadow, and probably he'll eventually be in his half-brother's make-up case.
Are they going to try to go in the Jimmy Garvin/Sunshine/Precious route with Santino/Beth/Rosa? If so, who is the Chris Adams?
And, I would rather have had them go with Mike Knox as a delusional person who believed that Rey Mysterio is an illegal alien and should be deported route rather than having no reason for beating him up. The other method would have provided the perfect opportunity to have a Loser Gets Deported for 90 days match.

Orton is doing heel-ish things but seems to get face pops. During the stand off between him and Vince, RKO chants were strong. This has happened before. The last time the W was in Canada, and other times before that.

I'm not definite but if they aren't careful he may get into that "Lawless Face" heat Austin had after KOTR. Him coming back and being connected to multiple storylines doesn't help either.

After Jeff Hardy's terrible, tragic accident on Friday's Smackdown, I was personally repulsed by all the pyrotechnics used with impunity on tonight's show. WHEN WILL WE LEARN? LONG LIVE THE DREAM.

Oh no they never finished the sentence and because apparently they can only storyline-fire people during television (unlike real-life firings, which appear on the dotcom seemingly randomly and at will) AND because somehow it will completely fail to occur to anybody that they could do it at any time Sunday night, Orton will totally win the Rumble and then they REALLY won't be able to fire him because he has the shot at WrestleMania! Dumbest, hole-iest logic ever and also most easily predictable storyline!

It's a little like the sitch where Tiffany and Ricky Ortiz have never kissed, because even though they came real close on ECW last week, Hornswoggle interrupted them and we all know that once the camera's off, there's no backstage interaction between ANYBODY, ANYWHERE.

I'm trying to figure out what exactly happened to Rosa Mendez between the time she was Milena Roucka and I was dying for her to win the Diva Search and now where I find her really rather unattractive. Is it the unnatural highlights? The strange and ugly makeup choices? Perhaps she's just covering up too much right now? Or am I now too old? Oh well.

Lower voice: Stephanie McMahon vs. Dr. Girlfriend?

I've been thinking about this a lot. Does Jack Swagger point to his face more or less than Rob van Dam used to point to himself? Maybe that's what'll make him a great ECW Champion.

Regal's "I kill you" dragon suplex was so, so great...mostly because it didn't cripple Punk even though it sure looked like it should have. On the other hand, Vince's head moving like Orton really kicked him almost made me forget all about it. But what a great, great match between Punk and Regal. By the way, d'ya think Punk regrets that infamous tattoo now that we have a new Pepsi logo - or is WWE now hard at work trying to slap a WWE trademark on the old one?

If I say "axiomatic" like Jericho did, will I get another search engine hit from a WWE IP address like I did *last* time I did it? I sure hope so!

Todd Grisham: Mike, come on. What's the deal?
Mike Knox: Gee... I dunno really.
Todd Grisham: Ah. Well, thanks for your time!

Did you hear? "Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia" moved more copies in its initial week of release than not one but SEVERAL popular movies released on DVD only FIVE years ago! BRAVO, WWENTERTAINMENT. Surely this is the type of PR that rebounds stock prices and justifies the payment of dividends!

Given all the complaints about the JBL-HBK storyline not being fleshed out much and all the questions about what exactly JBL gets out of this, I'm wondering if anyone previously complaining is at least somewhat sated by the past couple weeks of explanations. JBL considers this an investment into regaining the WWE championship and thinks it will allow him to headline WrestleMania in his home state of Texas. Or are there still missing parts of this story to some people?

I think this has more to do with Chicago loving their heels. And Canada is a whole different game altogether. In any case, there's no way a 10-year-old kid would like Orton, so he's definitely a heel. (At least as per WWE logic.)

They've usually been better about explaining away holes in their logic, which is a welcome relief from Vince growling "You don't DESERVE an explanation" and having that be the end of it.

I'm just assuming there is an unsaid Vern Schillinger/Tobais Beecher thing going on here behind the scenes. It's got to be what is really eating at HBK.

The CM Punk/Regal match wasn't quite as long or brutal as I was hoping for, but the head smash was nasty and the Regal escape attempt out of the Go to Sleep was a cool visual. The match really needed some more time, a PPV setting and some blood.

CM Punk being stoked to win the IC belt is nice to see.
