Around 570 stores and 35,000 newly unemployed people will be hitting the market over the next 2 months as Circuit City's attempt to get out of bankruptcy in the US fails, and liquidation begins. I wonder if 37"+ TV's will get near the $500 mark in liquidation. This does not impact Canada, and they claim the extended warranties are through a 3rd party, so they will remain valid. If the economy had not slid into the toilet, Circuit City would not have gone out of business today.
They'd have about another year.
This has, other than in pushing up the time frame, nothing to do with the economic issues in the country. Circuit was mismanaged for so long, and though they last made a good push in late '05 when margin in advanced TVs was phat, Best Buy's buying power due to eclipsing CC in market share around 2001 meant BBY could undercut at every turn...and they did.
There are a myriad other issues surrounding Circuit's demise: bad real estate decisions circa 1990, Divx, eliminating appliances, failure to embrace computer sales and service fast enough, poor DVD/games selection, and so on. This is a fifteen year storm that's blowing and while it's a Cat 5 because of the state of the economy, it would be a Cat 4 without it.

All that ever seemed to be on sale were the blank CDs and DVD-Rs.
And the company that liquidated CompUSA is bidding for the right to do the same for Circuit City.

When Circuit cut stores late last year a lot of merchandise was higher at the stores closing than at the ones remaining open. I wouldn't expect a lot of great deals.
According to Consumerist a group of liquidators are handling the funeral, and it appears Gordon (who did Comp and Linens n Things) might not be one of them. But I doubt the results will be much different.
At South Hill Mall - the one we frequent - there is a Circuit City that will close right next to the Linens and Things that just finished going out of business. Both of those stores are/were relatively new, too, being built well after we moved down here in late 2003.

I went to my local (very crowded) CC tonight and found the same thing. Lots of stuff was on sale, but nothing was "cheap". I assumed it was because I showed up on the same day they made their R.I.P announcement and I figured things would get cheaper as time went on. I guess not :(

Being that I am from that area as well, I think that the Circuit City there had just opened in 2007. It's a damn shame that many people are going to have to find work elsewhere in this climate though. I have not stepped inside a CC for an actual purchase since the late 90's. It's always been BB for me.

We have pretty much that exact same situation at the Shelbyville Plaza in Louisville. CC and L&T are/were pretty much right next to each other and both moved into/built new buildings there in the last few years which will now be sitting empty in a very crowded shopping corridor. Wish those folks working there the best of luck in finding suitable new employment. Also became a BB convert when they moved to town however long ago that was as I *hated* the CC hard sell on extended warranties and the like.

OH YEAH! That's right! That was another reason that I stopped going there. The last place I worked at (as of Sept) had a bunch of CC rejects working there. They always talked about upselling the freaking warranties and had to upsell everything that my prior employer sold all the damned time. God, I hated that.

Wow...what a shocker - I wasn't expecting them to close down so quickly.
I'm very curious to know what will become of THE SOURCE - Lord knows I wouldn't cry if they went under. The people at the store closest to me wouldn't know what a gamepad or game controller is if it bit them in the ass.
Concerning Linens and Things - I found it bizarre that they closed down their Canadian operations..apparently, while their US operations were tanking, the stores here were making a killing.
Regarding the sell-off, if it's anything like the way Linens and Things was done, it's all about picking your spot. I got a very nice toaster oven at my local LnT close-out, but I had to wait several weeks after the sale started and still paid 50% (and only managed to get the demo, the boxed ones all went at 30% off). It's not like they'll drop everything to 25% of original retail unless they need to clear a store in a matter of days.
At a place like Circuit City where there will be lots of people stalking big-ticket items, unless you've got time to spend on it, I wouldn't bother. However, just like the kitchen gadgets and such at LnT, stuff like adapters, cables, and electronic components that never normally go on sale will be the real "deals", as even at 25-50% off, it's better than you'll ever do otherwise.
As you may or may not know, CC went completely out of the Phoenix market over a month ago. I would not look for any spectaular sales, if the ones here were any indication. The only ripping deals we on the gadgety type stuff, not the TVs, Video games, etc. They just went 10-30% off, which got them down to Costco level.
Maybe it will be different without having other stores to move merchandise to.
The one that closed last month here got down to 70-80% in the final week but there wasn't much left by then. Course that was right before xmas so people were buying like crazy. might have a chance of more being left until the end now.
When the Linens n' Things stores were closing out in this area, there was a news story on how the liquidator was first raising the prices 10-15%, then putting those prices on sale 25% so the discount wasn't that great. They showed stickers with higher prices on top of the original prices.
Buyer also beware that when it happened here all the regular workers were gone in the first week or so, and they brought in temps to finish the job who had zero clue about the products and zero desire to provide you with good service.
I went to the aforemented-South Hill Mall Circuit City Sunday - it was CRAZY in there. I had a VISA gif card I was looking to buying a game with and I ended up getting 10% off FIFA 09. Yay.
The only REALLY annoying thing is that they had a TON of Guitar Hero and Rock Band bundles marked 10% off - but with no prices anywhere. The guy I dealt with said they were open until March 31 at the latest but it could be sooner.
It looked like 10% off everything but CDs and DVDs, which were 20% off.

So, buyer beware.
The local NBC station did a story about that too. Somehow the state Department of Consumer Protection found out, and consequently Gordon Brothers had to change the signs to say all the discounts were off the original price: Sticker Shock: Going Out of Business Sales (nbcconnecticut.com)
So while Gordon Brothers isn't involved, it's still standard operating procedure. Makes me wish I had any sort of data plan with my phone so I could price-check (although to be fair, I'm only looking for a laptop bag for an Acer Aspire One).
A friend of mine in Manhattan who knows that I'm a movie nut texted me today to tell me that his local Circuit City was selling all its Blu Ray movies at $20. I think most of their Blu Rays normally sell at ~$35, so that's about 40% off. Not bad. I'd check my local Circuit City myself to see if they were doing the same, but sadly all the ones around here closed months ago.
From what I've heard (CNN), the picture was not doctored, but it may have been a gag. Either way, it's just sick. I don't think I need to say what needs to happen to these people.
