Alex Shelley vs. Eric Young: This is a tournament semi-final; the winner gets to take on Chris Sabin (who is here in Shelley's corner) at Genesis (THIS SUNDAY ON PPV!) for the now-vacant X Division championship.

Shelley wins a fun, competitive match with Sliced Bread #2 (after Sabin dropkicks Young right in the face!). Shelley vs. Sabin at Genesis -- could be match of the night if they don't do something screwy booking-wise (Fingerpoke of Doom, e.g.).

The result surprises me -- I had been assuming that the whole purpose of the tournament was to put Eric Young over -- but I am quite far from disappointed. Hopefully they don't turn this into a MCMG breakup.

Shelley is the best guy on the roster at saying "Look at what a TOTAL PRICK I am!" through his ringwork alone.

After the match, Abdul Bashir is out to hassle ref Shane Sewell -- oh, he starts beating him down! Shane REFS UP and fights back! Bashir flees up the ramp -- but Jim Cornette is out. He FIRES Sewell -- he has to, his hand was forced. Bashir is AWESOME with his gloating here, waving "bye bye" and making "you're OUTTA here!" gestures.

But he celebrated too soon -- Cornette is only firing Sewell for THREE DAYS -- at Genesis, he's hired back as a wrestler, and his first opponent is Abdul Bashir! Okay, we all saw this one parading up Main Street, but still, the crowd goes wild for this.

The Main Event Mafia is out (Booker has his hair a twisted up in a bun and still manages to look pretty badass) and Kurt speaks first -- he's going to destroy Jeff Jarrett's buddy BG James tonight, and he's going to destroy JJ at Genesis. Angle is great. The other MEMers chime in with their varied threats.

In the back, Brother Devon and AJ Styles tell Mick Foley and Jeff Jarrett that they'll all stick together. Devon gives Mick Brother Ray's sleeveless red flannel shirt to wear. Aw!

Sarah Palin and the Beautiful People are on a farm for some reason and although I skip past most of it Velvet Sky gets in a good line at the end: "I'm going to be sick! ...Hold my hair!"

Madison Rayne vs. Awesome Kong: Kong is accompanied by Rhaka Khan, Raisha Saeed, and Sojourner Bolt -- the "Kongtourage." Madison Rayne is current Shimmer tag team champ Ashley Lane, and looks a little like a blonde Mickie James, especially around the chops. She gets KILLED.

Robert Roode vs. Matt Morgan: Match is cut short when Roode "injures" his knee -- of course, I'm expecting Roode to be faking it, but it turns out to be legit -- uh, storyline legit, I mean. Morgan wins via ref stoppage.

Jay Lethal and Consequences Creed are out now and decide to "cash in" their Feast or Fired briefcase, now that Roode's injured -- DICK MOVE. Also, I don't quite recall how the "cashing in" process worked last year, but I don't remember it being quite so "Money in the Bank"-y.

Lethal Consequences vs. Beer Money: Morgan and Abyss (who are supposed to get a title shot on Sunday) watch from the ramp with some consternation, unsure how this will affect them. James Storm does the best he can, and Roode tries to help, but he's practically one-legged. Even so, after Roode brings the briefcase in, Lethal decides to take the shortcut and he CLOBBERS Storm with the case! There's the pin and we have NEW tag team champions! Wow, for good guys, Lethal and Creed are kind of jerks! Even Tenay calls them "opportunistic."

It's pretty great watching a somewhat panicky Abyss trying to calm down an outraged Morgan. (Their fears turn out to be unwarranted -- the match at Genesis is going to be a three-team bout for the title: Lethal Consequences vs. Beer Money vs. Abyss and Morgan.) (Lethal Consequences is not their official team name, by the way, but how can you NOT call them that?)

We see Lethal and Creed celebrate in the locker room, and the rest of the Frontline seems happy for them, so maybe that wasn't a heel turn after all.

BG James -- sobbing heavily -- tells Jeff Jarrett that he (BG) has to go out and face Kurt Angle, and make Angle pay for everything he's said about Jarrett.

BG James vs. Kurt Angle: James ambushes Angle outside the ring, but Kurt sends BG into the ring post and busts him open. Match gets inside the ring and it's mostly Angle although James gets some licks in. Man, even when BG is hell bent on avenging his best pal he still does that dumb dance before the kneedrop. Angle reverses a piledriver (maybe?) into a backdrop and then floats over BEAUTIFULLY to catch James in an anklelock -- and then grapevining it -- for the win.

The MEM is out and they DESTROY James' ankle with a steel chair. JJ and Foley are out for the save, followed by Styles and Devon and Rhino. (I'm not excited about the way the Frontline is now focused on two aging authority figures.) BG James is taken out on a stretcher.

Jeff Jarrett tells Kurt that he's gone too far -- Jeff's speechless with rage, and Mick Foley takes the mic away and, wow, cuts a really good promo about how he's old and haggard now but he's still the Hardcore Legend.

And...scene.

Good show, top to bottom, with the exception of Sarah Palin, which is (so far) a minor issue in the grand scheme of things.

That main event was surprisingly good. Who thought BG James had a decent match in him?

I thought taking the tag titles off Beer Money was not a great idea, but it does the Frontline some favors, as now they have some gold to show of their own. Wonder where that leaves Morgan and Abyss though. I thought they were next in line for a tag title push. Of course, it would've been more logical to have Abyss and Morgan take the titles off Storm and Roode at the PPV and then be recruited by the Frontline.

I know! They even had a nice little catchphrase going to the same effect.

Is Tenay so out of fresh material that he has to rip off Michael Cole of all people?

As good as Foley is with his mic work, I'm really not looking forward to his in-ring return.

I didn't happen to catch the first half of this show, but it sounds much better than any Impact from the previous month and a half or so. I just wish you'd do a wrestling counter for the sake of comparison.

I remember thinking the same thing in 2004 against Orton and 2006 against Edge, so maybe he will surprise again.

I'm thinking Homicide cashes is the Money in the....erm....Feast or Fired Briefcase during the Shelley/Sabin match this weekend, in a way that it won't split the MCMG up. Then they can focus on Lethal Consequences (Good name mate!) for the tag titles.

No idea what they are gonna do with Hernandez though. There's no way he's gonna swoop in between MEM and Frontline's war, win the championship and fight off both teams. Unlessssss, he becomes champion, sides with the Frontline with Homicide, then later at a crucial moment turns on Homicide and the Frontline and shows his true allegiance with the MEM as they see him as a proper successor to "The Family". Then they just give him some direct feuds with Joe and Rhyno forthe first half of the year. This will properly split LAX and put new blood in the main event.

TNA might do that right? It's got a double swerve and everything.

I've thought for a long time that BG had a decent match left in him, just not a decent tag match with Kip James in him.

Shelley vs. Homicide vs. Sabin would be a great match but I'd rather see Shelley vs. Sabin with no hint of breakup. Hopefully Shelley wins. With Christian out of the picture I think you can seriously make an argument for Shelley being the best all-around talent. Plus he's never won it before and Sabin has won plenty of times.

As for Hernandez. I'd love to see him challenge Sting and surprise everybody by winning, then have the two sides both try and recruit him. But that's not happening. If Hernandez gets a shot at Sting then he won't even be booked as a legit threat. If we want to see Hernandez at least have a competitive World Title match then that's probably more likely to happen when (if?) Styles or Joe wins the title from Sting.

I'm in the minority that actually likes Jarrett, but yeah, having him and Mick lead the Frontline is lame. If only AJ would quit the Frontline, go find Daniels and join Shelley and Sabin and then kick both teams' asses. A guy can dream.

So let me see if I got this straight: Bashir comes in and attacks Sewell unprovoked; Sewell defends himself, and gets canned? Something just doesn't jive there. I can't wait to see their match on Sunday; Sewell is awesome...but still. The lack of logic is very much there. Yes, I know its Sportsentertainment...but I'd expect that moreso from WWE than TNA, who are running some of the better storylines right now.

The Rough Cut feature is becoming one of my favorites segments on Impact. I loved how Storm and Roode were portrayed as normal everyday people, and seeing Storm play with his kids was touching. I can't wait to see one on Eric Young.

As Alvarez said, it was good for TNA to invest all this time with Roode and Storm, just in time for them to lose the tag titles, and in a manner usually reserved for babyfaces.

Yeah, but they brought them right back in for the tag title shot at the PPV, so it's not like they are just dropping Beer Money right away. And yeah, I could see a babyface run here soon based on the Rough Cut segments.

The show on Thursday was pretty good and TNA has built the PPV effectively. Add in Mick Foley wrestling, and they are looking at a PPV that will probably do really well (for them) and help them coast until Lockdown in April.
