TONIGHT: The Fatal Four-Way to find out who faces John Cena at Royal Rumble. Plus, a six-diva battle royal to find out who faces Beth Phoenix at the Rumble!

-WWE Open

-RAW Open.

-Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler intro’d the show, plugging the fatal four-way.

-Rey Mysterio was already in the ring, and he had a mic. He had a beef with HBK’s actions last week, costing him a shot at the title. We then saw what happened last week. Rey said he respects HBK but they have a problem now. Rey then called out Shawn, who came out with little hesitation. Rey said he wasn’t going to ask for Shawn’s spot in the Rumble match (four-way?); instead, he asked Shawn to face him one-on-one tonight. Rey asked Shawn to do the right thing. He accepted. The two shook hands, but JBL came out. He changed Shawn’s answer to “no.” He said the fatal four-way is the only match Shawn will be in tonight. He then asked Shawn to leave the ring. Shawn slowly walked to the ropes and left. Rey tried to talk sense into HBK as Shawn headed up the ramp. As he did this, Mike Knox came from behind and attacked Rey. Shawn looked like he wanted to help, but JBL stood in front of him, blocking his way. Knox continued his assault in the ring until John Cena came out and got rid of Knox.

[Break]

-Backstage, Randy Orton proclaimed TheLegacy would be bigger than any other group. He told Cody Rhodes, Manu and Sim Snuka that phase one is tonight: they all had singles matches and if they lose, they’re out. Cody was first up.

(1) Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk
Before the match started, William Regal and Layla came out. Next week, Regal takes on Punk on Raw. Rhodes tried a few pinning combinations, but they ended up going back-and-forth. Jumping heel kick from Punk for two. Cody held onto the ropes on a DDT attempt and took over offensively. Rhodes rolled through a cross-body for two. Hard kick by Punk to Cody’s head. Punk dove through the ropes and onto Rhodes on the outside where Punk’s head bounced off the announce table. After a knee to the head, Punk got distracted by Regal and Rhodes snuck into the ring to beat the count.

Winner: Rhodes, at 4:08. That count-out finish has been used a bit too much lately. Decent enough match.

After the match, Punk bulldogged Rhodes in the ring and Regal nailed Punk.

-John Cena was backstage with Stephanie McMahon, who revealed Cena would be doing guest commentary during the fatal four-way tonight. Cena did some intentionally bland commentary, then did a nice Harry Caray impersonation. He wanted to do something big instead for the final Raw of 2008. Cena, rather than do guest commentary, made a pitch for him to be in a match with Mike Knox and Rey Mysterio. He said she must know what the fans want better than him and walked away.

-The Divas battle royal is still to come.

[Break]

-Backstage Goldust, to Christmas music, gave out “Christmas gifts” to WWE Superstars. It was done in rhyme. There were pictures shown over his shoulder of the gifts and the superstars. He said he got a gift for “this guy” (Dolph Ziggler) but he forgot his name. To Santino he gave a healthy new scrotus, soon to be shattered by the man known as Goldust. It was hit-and-miss.

-Two weeks, ago, Randy Orton put Batista on the shelf with a punt to the head. Cole said Batista had to have a bone graft to his jaw as he had two teeth knocked out. Lawler added that Batista decided to have hamstring surgery while he was under the knife. They showed footage of Batista getting surgery for it.

-Kelly Kelly, Melina and Mickie James (Lillian screwed up her ring intro I think) came out for the Divas battle royal. The other participants and match will be next.

[Break]

(2) Six-Diva Battle Royal- Winner Faces Champion at Royal Rumble
Santino introduced Beth back from break. Beth and Santino took a seat at the announce desk. The others involved were Katie Lea, Candice Michelle and Jillian Hall. Beth passed Rosa Mendez on her way to the table. Candice was thrown out about 45 seconds in. She’s fallen pretty far off the radar I guess. Kelly was eliminated by Jillian a minute in. Mickie threw out Katie and Jillian as they tried to get rid of Melina. It was down to Melina and Mickie. The ladies came to a stand-off as Santino compared Melina to a gypsy. Mickie was tossed over the top but landed on the apron. Melina knocked her off and to the floor for the win.

Winner: Melina, at 2:46. Yuck.

Beth slapped Melina in the ring and the two brawled to ringside where Beth’s crazed fan tried to help her. Security hauled her away.

-Todd Grisham was backstage with Chris Jericho. Jericho was unhappy about WWE Magazine naming him Jerk of the Year. He wanted to know what the criteria for that was and told about everything he proved right thus far. He said he’d win tonight and be WWE Champion again. Jericho said if fans want to see the Jerk of the Year, look in the mirror.

-The Race to the Rumble continues tonight!

[Break]

(3) Sim Snuka vs. “Super Haas” Charlie Snuka
Did I miss where Snuka was a part of the group? Oh man, they got me again! Haas lost the wig early in the match, but got a thrust to the neck of Sim. Snuka hit a nice face-buster for two. Sim did some choking in the ropes and Haas came back with a headbutt. Flying knee to the face by Sim for two. I thought that’d be a good finisher. Crowd was not so much into this one. I don’t think it’s fair to give one guy Punk and another Haas. Crowd cheered for Haas to break a rest-hold. Couple leap-frogs by Haas (including a backward one) and a double chop. Haas slammed Snuka, put the wig back on and went to the top. He came down hard on Sim’s knees though. Jumping kick to the back of Haas’ head finished it.

Winner: Sim, at 4:05. Eh, it was OK. There’s something in Sim to build around.

-Stephanie apparently has set up a huge ten-man tag for tonight, and John Cena and Rey Mysterio were walking backstage. Apparently, we’ll find out the details next.

[Break]

(4) John Cena & Rey Mysterio & Kofi Kingston & Cryme Tyme vs. Kane & John Morrison & The Miz & Dolph Ziggler & Mike Knox
Wow those entrances took a while. And they’ll probably take a break two minutes into the match. Dolph was unhappy JTG wouldn’t shake his hand. Both members of Cryme Tyme had their way with Ziggler until he dodged a Shad splash and tagged Morrison. John didn’t have any better luck, at least immediately. After Kofi took it to Morrison, all ten men went to a stand-off in the ring as the show went to break.

[Break]

Miz was in control of Kingston out of break. Rey came in and flew around the ring, taking it to Miz. After a cheap shot by Kane, he and Mike Knox traded off doing damage to Rey. On the top rope Rey hit….a reverse (or backward) hurricanrana on Morrison. Impressive. Rey made the tag to Cena, who cleaned house. Cena and Kofi each did their pet moves to Knox and Ziggler respectively. Cena then FU’d Knox. Rey begged for a tag and got one. He splashed Knox and got the pin.

Winners: Cena, Cryme Tyme, Kofi & Rey at 11:26. Yeah, you gotta protect Dolph. Fine match.

-Todd Grisham barged into HBK’s locker room to get a comment about the match later tonight. Michaels said he was Mr. Wrestlemania, and when it comes to that PPV, he concerned only about stealing the show.

-The Race to the Rumble continues later tonight.

[Break]

-Kelly was talking to, presumably her boyfriend. She asked why he was avoiding her and that she thought they had fun that night. She was almost in tears. The camera panned back to show Randy Orton. He put the badmouth to her and said that night didn’t mean anything to him and he doesn’t need a distraction like her around. Likes sand through the hourglass….

(5) Manu vs. Matt Hardy
Some inconsequential and non-descript fighting went on for the first minute or two. Hardy back-dropped Manu out of the ring, then dropkicked him through the middle rope. Manu hung Hardy out to dry throat-first on the top rope. To make the match more exciting, Manu applied a standing head-lock. Then he took it to the mat. Manu tried a roll-up for two. Manu blocked a Hardy elbow off the second rope and hit a swinging neck-breaker for two. Big splash by Manu in the corner followed a dropkick. He hit another one on the other side of the ring. Matt came back with a Twist of Fate for the win.

Winner: Hardy, at 7:51. Nothing technically wrong with it, but brutally boring.

-The Fatal Four-Way is next.

[Break]

(6) Randy Orton vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho vs. JBL –Fatal Four-Way With The Winner Faces The Champion at Royal Rumble
Referee Mike Chioda had a tough time explaining that it’s two in the ring at once and the other two have to wait for tags. Has it always been like that? Anyway, elimination rules here. HBK arm-dragged Jericho around the ring and to the outside as the show went to break.

[Break]

It was Orton and Jericho upon return from break. Big scoop slam from Orton. Jericho did his springboard dropkick to Orton, knocking him to ringside. Jericho and Michaels had another go at it for one last time in 2008. HBK headbutted Jericho off the top and hit an elbowdrop. JBL got tagged in and Jericho hit the Codebreaker on him, but HBK broke up the pin. Shawn made the blind tag and superkicked Jericho as he was putting the Walls on JBL, pinned him and eliminated him at 8:59. The match continues after break.

[Break]

JBL had the sleeper on Orton out of break. Crowd got behind Randy with chants of “RKO.” JBL was pwning Orton until Randy got a boot up on JBL in the corner. Standing dropkick by Orton, who then Garvin stomped JBL. Orton set up for the running kick, but JBL crawled to the corner and tagged Shawn. Orton put the boots to Michaels’ ribs a number of times, then lined up for the RKO. Michaels was able to counter and the two went toe-to-toe. This time Shawn tuned up the band. He nailed Orton for the pin at 20:11. JBL got in the ring and stood face-to-face with JBL. JBL pointed to the ground and Shawn got that puppy-dog look on his face. The crowd booed as HBK milked the moment. They then started chanting for him. JBL pointed again. Shawn went down to a knee then got back up. JBL talked to him, demanding him to get down (probably). He finally, slowly, went down, but got up before JBL could pin him. JBL ordered him down again. HBK huffed and puffed and appeared to be going crazy. He wanted JBL to hit him so JBL clotheslined him hard and pinned him.

Winner: JBL, at 23:41.

JBL quickly went up to the stage and stood as Shawn sat sadly in the ring.

Randy Orton says Kelly Kelly's not good in bed! Burn! I think this is the first time a wrestler slept with a Diva in storyline and publicly said she's no good. (And has storyline Orton been talking to kayfabe Batista?)

No one could have foreseen Orton as Kelly's secret boyfriend, and turns out he's not even her boyfriend. It was just one night and Orton didn't think it was all that. Poor sweet, trusting, young Kelly Kelly was protecting Orton from Kane for nothing. I hope she learned a valuable lesson from this experience: do stuff, don't just lie there!

And after getting Tombstoned by Kane two weeks ago, Miz teamed with Kane without hesitation. Bros before hos, I s'pose.

They closed out CM Punk's 2008 just like they booked him for 8 of the last 12 months - by jobbing him out. Wow, they booked Punk to look like an idiot! All of a sudden he "forgot" the referee was counting, even though the entire crowd was counting along. He lets himself get distracted by William Regal - who wasn't even doing anything except give him a dirty look. Then Punk is a sore loser who attacks Cody Rhodes after the match, only to get laid out by Regal's running knee. Wow. He's a dishrag who got to wear the World Title for a few months then went back to being a dishrag. It's a fitting end to Punk's year.

Lillian was on vacation last week and boy, did I miss her screwups. Lillian announced Mickie James from "Louisville (pause)" instead of Richmond, Virginia. Oh, Lillian, in August it'll be your 10th anniversary as RAW ring announcer - will you ever get good at your job?

Anyone want to ask Mickie her opinion of Beth Phoenix's obsessed fan Rosa Mendez? Mickie might have some valuable advice for Rosa on how to get in with Beth, like maybe she could wait until Beth's coming out of the shower and offer her a towel. Mickie could also school Rosa on how to build a shrine to her heroine. Mickie's a storehouse of stalker information just waiting to be tapped.

So Sim Snuka gets to be in Legacy and Manu doesn't? That's like trading horse manure for cow manure. Neither of them should be in Legacy. The faction isn't even formed yet and it's already watered down. Legacy should just be Orton, Rhodes and Ted DiBiase when he gets back from shooting The Marine 2. But does losing his audition match mean Manu can't hang out with Cody anymore?

On the plus side, JBL is a million kinds of awesome. Michaels refusing to lie down but sacrificing himself to the Clothesline from Hell was a nice touch. King: "Shawn Michaels doesn't lay down for anybody!" Apparently he's forgotten when Shawn laid down for Triple H to pin him for the coveted European Title back in '97.

JBL vs. Cena at the Rumble makes perfect sense. It saves JBL for HBK at WrestleMania 25 and JBL vs. Cena is a good World Title match to throw on the Rumble PPV midcard since no one is buying the Rumble PPV for anything other than the Royal Rumble match itself. This leaves all of Cena's best potential opponents free to compete in the Rumble match.

Still, a mostly lethargic crowd, throwaway Divas battle royal, dull Legacy audition matches, bizarre tag/elimination rules for the fatal four way main event where Chris Jericho is dropped like a bad habit. Me no like. After last week's Stratusfying RAW, this week's final RAW of 2008 was a big letdown.

But no more let down than Randy Orton was the morning after. Damn. Poor Kelly Kelly.

If they really wanted, the Legacy could probably be NWO-sized. I bet, off the top of my head, there are probably at least 15 people who would qualify for the Legacy. Keeping the group at 4 or 5 is probably the way to go.

He gave Stacy Keibler an RKO - was Kelly really thinking that things would end up better for he? (Ah, no - see where I put "Kelly" and "thinking" in the same sentence...THAT was my mistake.)

I am SOOOOOOOO TIRED of this Orton as viper/snake commentary. It's so overused it isn't even a cliche anymore. It's a megaultimatecliche. HE'S COILING THAT VIPER LIKE A VIPER HE'S COILING THE VIPER IS LIKE A VIPER COILING UP LIKE A VIPER AHHHHHHHHHHHH SHUT UP VIPER

That said, it was nice that Lawler got fed the "he doesn't lay down for anybody!" a good three minutes after I shouted it at the TV. Not to mention they were already well past the 10:05 cutoff and that last bit STILL took like fifteen minutes to unfold - mostly because we had to get Shawn to whip up all those tears we never saw when he was busy retiring Ric Flair (whom he loved so, so much - which probably tells you a bit about Shawn's priorities.)

Still, the commentators are played to be such morons. "Oh boy, we're gonna see the employee versus the employer!" when everybody in the building knows that Michaels has to lay down for JBL. At least Lawler was allowed to get it the FIRST time JBL pointed to the canvas.

More commentary: did you hear? JBL *CRUCIFIED* Michaels. He CRUCIFIED him. Oy gevalt!

Look, I appreciate that they're TRYING to make sense of it all with the ten thousand references to our bad economy and everybody losing all their money in the market and walking around wearing a barrel held on by suspenders AND adding that for Michaels to do what he just did, JBL must have given Shawn a better deal than "main eventing WrestleMania" money, but it's still a reeeeeeeeeeeeal stretch. There's no good reason for JBL to be that generous.

Y'know, John, MOST ring announcers would say that Rhodes' win came via countout, but only Lilian Garcia could say that he won "by a countout." ...which is probably a perfectly valid way of putting it, except that it sounds totally wrong. Kinda like not calling last week's DQ a DQ - Lilian must not have seen enough DQs over the past years to spot one when it actually gets booked.

Methinks Manu will earn his way back into Orton's good graces next week by saving Orton from a Kane beatdown.

...or, the mystery 'boyfriend' could be a douchebag. So, does this somehow make Kane into a face? That's quite a face turn --- stalking a woman and then attacking her paramour, who happens to be a heel.

I gotta think Orton being the secret boyfriend is a rejiggered plan B storyline decision. With Batista on the DL, Orton suddenly had no rival. I'm guessing the call was made for Kane to be made a face out of this and get married to Orton, which agreed, doesn't make much sense considering how Kane stalked Kelly to start this whole thing. But now K2 kind of needs a chivalrous defender, even if it is a big bald psychopath. But that big bald psychopath LOVES her, damn it! He won't say she sucks in the sack.

That's why Charlie Haas dumped Jackie for Dawn Marie.

JBL vs. Cena is a good World Title match to throw on the Rumble PPV midcard

Plus JBL has a clean win over Cena.

It saves JBL for HBK at WrestleMania 25

No thank you. I'm sure the moment when Shawn finally fights back will be a good one but JBL is not up to Mr. Wrestlemania standards. Michaels/Undertaker plz. Although they haven't done Undertaker/Umaga yet so he could be a Mark Henry-like streak-padder this year.

You left out her heel turn, where she cozies back up to Kane, saying maybe he was right all along, & the thing that will most win her affection is Kane beating on Randy. He's then the sympathetic pawn, being used by a manipulative woman for her own personal revenge. Trite, but easy enough to whip up in an emergency. (Kane generally hovers around in that Tweenerland where he's a psycho, but still can garner sympathy. So he can flip either direction at the drop of a comment. I like that about him.)

So Dave's tear is up north at the tushie end of his hamstring, eh? The doctor said that the surgery only took about an hour, which is a good sign.

Interestingly, the interview didn't mention an estimated recovery time, which they almost always include when they show these. Given that he's been working with this injury for so long, I wonder if the recovery is actually going to be the 6-8 months that the rumours are saying. Perhaps the predictions of missing WM are a work.

We had that, and
- Michael Cole saying the last man eliminated goes to the Royal Rumble
- Lawler being shocked to see SmackDown's Matt Hardy as an ECW logo comes on the screen

Well, he got a title shot out of it that he probably wouldn't have without this arrangement, and if he actually wins at the Rumble with HBK interference, he'll have earned a lot from his generosity. And he also got to stop worrying about being attacked by HBK all the time, while humiliating one of his rivals. With as big a jerk as he was, why did the McFlys hire Biff to wash their cars? Has Michael always been calling Shawn's top rope elbow "vintage HBK"? I am glad that that vintage Michael Cole has lived on. Along with "The Animallll" and "619 connecting." 2006 wants its Michael Cole calls back. He's not a leprechaun, he's a damn troll.

Kelly should win Randy Orton back by revealing that she is a second generation wrestler, daughter of Kevin Kelly.
