After last week's universally panned Impact, let's see how TNA does this week. Also, TNA has announced a Global Impact taping on 1/4/09 from the Tokyo Dome, which opens up the possibility of having Milano Collection AT on my TV, which is not a bad thing at all. With that said, onto the show...

The quick and dirty for TNA Impact 12.18.08 - "Main Event Massacre."

Match 1: Rhino over Lance Rock via GORE in about 2 mins. When was the last time TNA opened Impact with a match?

- Post match, Rhino calls T-NAF down the ring to remind them that this is war and there will be casualties. He promises that they won't stand for what the MEM did last week. If the MEM want a fight, they'll have a fight. Rhino goes on to promise that he'll leave Sting in a pile of his own piss, blood, and shit at Genesis. AJ announces Booker/Steiner v Morgan/Abyss for tonight. Since MEM want to behave like animals, they'll get Joe in a cage tonight. Fun promo.

- Backstage, Kurt Angle promises to spill Frontline blood. He says he's paying a tribute to Jeff Jarrett, because after Genesis, Jarrett will be "extinct." Nice choice of words.

- Elsewhere, MCMG offer Lauren the role of "meat in a Motor City Sandwich." She declines, so they focus on railing on Mick Foley. Shelley promises to make the X-Division Tourney finals.

X-Division Title Tourney QF: Chris Sabin over Sonjay Dutt via Cradle Shock in about 5 mins. Well, at least they're getting time. Apparently, Dutt and Sheik Abdul Bashir have been having closed-door meetings backstage, and Bashir watched this match from ringside. We'll see where that goes.

- Backstage, The Beautiful People share hair tips with "Sarah Palin." Kip bursts in saying he's the fashion consultant, but they tell him that while they love him, they want to use "Sarah"'s fashion people. Kip throws a fit and storms off, presumably looking for Chuck.

ODB's Angle: She's with Christy Hemme, and they talk about the Diva Search, and Hemme's Playboy stint before ODB starts railing on Divas putting on a pair of boots and pretending to be wrestlers. Recent developments have led me to believe that WWE's divas are more talented than the Knockouts as a whole, but that's just me. Anyway, Raisha Saeed comes down to beat the shit out of Hemme with a trashcan, leading to a pull-apart.

- Elsewhere, Mick Foley is in the MEM locker room. He says that last week the MEM went too far and gets bleeped out for saying "gangbang." Ugh. Angle says it turned into a streetfight and they had no choice. They toast to the promise of no more beatdowns.

- TNA Rough Cuts on Robert Roode. This is one of my favorite segments on Impact.

Match 3: Main Event Mafia (Steiner and Booker) over Matt Morgan and Abyss when Booker pinned Morgan with a Lead Pipe+Axe Kick in about 8 mins. Surprisingly, Matt Morgan did most of the carrying in this match, and Steiner still looks slow as hell.

- Angle comes out for his tribute to Jeff. But first, he shills his DVD, before moving onto Jeff's career and outlining his achievements. He promises to drown Jarrett in a pool of his own blood at Genesis, after which he'll have the heart to adopt Jeff's three daughters because he cares. That is enough to bring out Jarrett in a fighting mood. A lot of people come out to hold him back while he shouts obscenities at Angle. This shit keeps me interested in this match, which is more than what I can say for any other match on the card at Genesis.

- Backstage, JJ throws shit around in his own office. Dumbass. BG James says it's half Mick's fault.

X-Division Title Tourney QF: Kiyoshi over Consequences Creed via Moonsault in about 5 mins. It was a sharp, quick match. Kiyoshi's look is a copy of "his mentor" Great Muta. Kiyoshi is actually Akira Raijin (bodyslamming.com), an All Japan talent and sometimes tag partner of Mutoh.

- Backstage, "Sarah" asks the Beautiful People to make a choice between being wrestlers or being role models. She promises them that they can be bigger than Barack Obama if they trust her.

- Tenay does a sit-down interview with Shane Sewell. He was a wrestler before a neck injure forced him to retire. He says he's not gonna take Bashir's shit lying down. If Bashir costs him his job at TNA, he will not go peacefully.

Streetfight: ODB and Christy Hemme over Rhaka Khan and Raisha Saeed when Hemme pinned Khan with the FFG in about 2 mins. Nothing match. ODB is getting large. Post match, Awesome Kong comes out bust these bitches' implants, but Suicide makes the save. I told Karlos last week that TNA have no long- or short-term plans for Suicide and this is proof.

- Backstage, Sting sidesteps JB's questions about last week's beatdown. Nash says no one has more integrity than Sting, and gets on JB's case for doubting it. He brings up all those incidences when people have spit in Sting's face, claiming that he's always respected Sting. He says he can't go at it alone and needs Sting to bat cleanup. Sting reluctantly agrees.

- Elsewhere, JB confronts Foley about buddying up with the MEM. He defends Angle, giving him a pass on all the threats he made for Genesis. Foley claims to take no sides, saying that in the times of economic crises, you go with proven winners. He promises no more beatdowns.

Tornado Tag - Six Sides of Steel: AJ Styles and Samoa Joe over Main Event Mafia (Nash and Sting) when Styles escaped in about 9 minutes. Given the in-ring limitations of Nash and Sting, this was fairly nice. The commentary and the over-the-top hype of the Six Sides of Steel really dragged this match for me, though.

- Post match, Nash puts the boots on Joe and smacks AJ in the face with the cage door. Joe makes his own save, tossing Sting, but the rest of the Mafia comes down to beat his ass six ways from Sunday. They Pillmanize his hand while Sting holds off Frontline guys outside the cage. Our friend steel pipe makes an appearance as well. Joe gets caught with the Ankle Lock, and that is our last shot tonight.

- End show.

Wrestling Counter: 33 minutes.

** Marginally better than last week, and they put on SIX matches tonight, even though two of them were just filler. Many of the same gripes remain, and the main feud is beginning to bore me due to its one-sidedness. Most anyone not involved in the MEM feud is pretty much directionless. (SEE: Beer Money, X-Division, Suicide, Morgan/Abyss, etc.) Give this show a skip unless you're a die-hard TNA fan.

I enjoyed the show. Some good matches, some stuff I haven't seen before (some of Kiyoshi's moves, and using Nash as a stepladder, for instance). Not bad at all. (I skipped past all the Palin and ODB stuff.)

Matt Morgan has been growing on me -- a little -- and I do like the Carbon Footprint. I've heard rumors that an old stablemate of his may be on his way to TNA...

Oh, pfft. Their short-term plan is that he is MYSTERIOUS and HELPFUL. Their long-term plan is that he overstays his welcome. It's obvious!

You know, it's amazing how much the exit of Gail Kim has adversely affected the Knockout Division. She really was both the centerpiece and the glue, and TNA is kind of flailing around in her absence. Kim's a good wrestler who can carry others to decent matches, a dangerous veteran who can still play the spunky underdog, and all-American-yet-exotic. Those are some big boots to fill. They flirted with Taylor Wilde and are now trying Christy Hemme in that role, but I suspect that it won't take. According to the Wrestling Observer-via-411:

TNA is currently searching for a top female face to replace Gail Kim. They are currently searching, and the name of "Dark Angel" Sarah Stock has been discussed. The company may not go after her as they want to keep a friendly relationship with relationship with Paco Alonso and CMLL.
So it sounds like they don't think it'll take either. I've heard Stock's name a lot but I'm not familiar with her; anyone have anything to say about her?

Sarah Stock is an incredible talent. She can wrestle both Lucha and American style, she is trilingual (English, Spanish, Canadian), and she is extremely attractive. Outside of some youtube stuff I've only seen her working in SHIMMER, but she has put on extremely solid matches every time out.

I'd watch TNA if Sarah Stock was involved.

Of course, if they wanted to improve the women's division right now they could take the stupid burqa off and let Cheerleader Melissa go out and do her thing instead of being a job girl.

I was really enjoying the Knockouts Division, but it seemed to go to crap once Gail Kim and Scott D'Amore left the company. It just seems as if the division lost its direction.

Definitely a better effort than last week.

I agree with this completely. I like the Knockouts Division and there is very good talent there, but the hype they received this past year was a little much. The Divas got a comparatively bad rap.

No matter how much talent is in a promotion, a lot comes down to how they're managed and booked, and currently the Knockouts are not being booked very well. Meanwhile, the Divas always have to deal with the one step forward (Beth vs. Melina), two steps back (Las Vegas stripper pole matches, Santa's Little Helpers matches) way WWE books them.

Losing Gail Kim to WWE was huge. But even when Gail Kim was still in TNA, I felt the Divas stacked up favorably against the Knockouts talent-wise. I'd stack Beth Phoenix, Mickie James, Melina, Katie Lea Burchill, Natalya, Victoria and Michelle McCool against Awesome Kong, Angelina Love, ODB, Roxxi, Taylor Wilde, Christy Hemme, etc. any day. And now Gail Kim is a Diva again. To me, Stamford is holding the most female talent right now. (Hell, Maryse and Kelly Kelly are even improving by leaps and bounds and I don't think Candice and Maria are entirely hopeless. They both try very hard. And I'd pick Candice in the ring over Christy any day, despite the "three months of training" she received from AJ Styles.)

This Sarah Stock woman intrigues me, however. Never heard of her before. I'd like to see her in action.

The Beautiful People/Sarah Palin thing isn't helping either. Talia is over even though she isn't very good in the ring and Angel is actually pretty good in the ring and was getting great heel heat after feuding with Roxxi and Gail. I don't see the point in not having them in matches. And even though I'd hate to see them lose to Christy I think that's a better match up if you're going to push her.

3 Dark Angel matches for you:

* Dark Angel vs Amapola (c) for the CMLL Women's Championship
* Dark Angel & Goddess, Marcela vs Amapola, Hiroka, Mima Shimoda
*
w/Marcela & Lady Apache vs Princesa Sujei, Amapola, Medussa

There's more if you look thru my DailyMotion profile. There are certainly other talented women's wrestlers in CMLL - probably the best group of any promotion currently running men and women's matches - but most of the rest are not English speakers.

After all that, Dave's since said it's highly unlikely Sarah would end up in TNA because of visa issues; she might have skirted legal issues to work for SHIMMER previously. CMLL and TNA can work together to get Mexican wrestlers visa because they're in Mexico and all, but Dark Angel is a Canadian citizen who spends most of her time in Mexico, upping the difficulty level.

I would imagine it is easier to get away with working one day in America than it would be to be part of a weekly show.

That said, considering her spot in CMLL right now and the possible visa issues, the only thing I could see that would bring her to the USA full time would be a full-time offer from WWE. And it would probably have to be a promise to be given at the very least a Beth Phoenix like push where you're on the show every single week and not just filler. So basically I guess I don't see her on American tv any time soon. Which is a shame. Of all the top female workers who could feasibly work in an American promotion, she is probably the best mix of charisma and talent. Cheerleader Melissa, Mercedes Martinez, Sara Del Rey, and Daizee Haze can all work about the same quality, but are unlikely to draw the same reaction from a TNA crowd.

I did find it interesting that apparently Ashley Lane (one half of the SHIMMER tag champs) and Portia Perez got tryout matches. Ashley's will apparently be a tv match. Lane I find relatively boring. But Portia Perez has heel charisma. She looks about 12 years old and has the little bratty bitch character down.

Apart from Gail Kim's departure, the other thing that has affected this division adversely is the directionless way in which they've been booked ever since the MEM storyline started. Actually, you could say that for everyone not involved in that feud, but it's really hurt the Knockouts. The focus has shifted to silly backstage antics instead of in-ring action. When the TNA Knockouts came about, the opportunity given to them to showcase their skills in the ring is what differentiated them from the Divas. Now it seems that the wheel has come full circle, and the WWE gals seem to be getting a lot more opportunity to actually wrestle.

Plus, having Christy Hemme be the new face of the division is probably not going to pan out the way TNA want.

I thought it was due to the absence of Scott D'Amore, who was either training and/or booking the women's stuff.

Six of one, half-dozen of the other, more than likely.

I have no idea how the booking team works, but if someone told me that D'Amore concentrated on the Knockout division, and, since his departure, that division no longer had anyone to whom it was the primary focus, and was instead a secondary focus or perhaps even afterthought to other members of the booking team, who were more concerned with the MEM/Frontline feud -- I would find that pretty believable.

Maybe, but not winning it from Brock at WM19. He may win it on Raw or something like that. Remember when Luger beat Hogan on Nitro, only to lose the title back to Hogan at Road Wild. Hogan went on to hold the title until Goldberg beat him on Nitro.
