While I like everyone else is afflicted with World Cup fever, there were some big developments today in the American version of football, as a boatload of big names got cut for salary cap reasons. Among the biggest names to be released on the open market:

Antonio Freeman - WR Green Bay
Derrick Alexander - WR Kansas City
Keenan McCardell - WR Jacksonville
Jamal Anderson - RB Atlanta
Charlie Batch - QB Detroit
Herman Moore - WR Detroit
John Fina - OT Buffalo
Marco Coleman - DT Washington

I'll tell you right now, I'd kill to see the Bears take a shot at any of those first three wideouts, particularly Freeman. Give him two shots a year at the Pack.

Who's going to be the team to take the flyer on Jamal and see if he has anything left?

Sounds like the Cowboys might give Anderson a shot...

As for the WR's, man would I love the 'Fins to grab one. If not, I will just be happy that they didn't sign C.Carter!!

I would like to see the Eagles take a shot at Antonio Freeman. He would be an immeadiate upgrade to the WR corps and give Freddie Mitchell time to develop. We could use another veteran to give ourselves some much needed depth.

Anderson will retire. 2 bad knees equals no contract.

Batch will catch on somewhere as a number 3.

Other than that, who knows.

wouldn't be at all surprised to see Alexander in Oakland - McCardell in Houston and Freeman in Tampa....the next few weeks leading up to camp should be interesting in the FA area.

Actually, there has been talk for months that McCardell should wind up with the Bucs, and if not him then Alexander.

Iiiii don't think so. Teams will remember Anderson's penchant for dominanting games and want to take a chance on him. I see him ending up in Arizona behind their young improving O-line and possibly taking Thomas Jones' starting job ('cause, let's face it, you, I, and they know that Jones is nothing).

See, Anderson really hasn't dominated a game since the Falcons' improbable run to the Super Bowl in 1998-1999. Anderson held out at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season, and paid the price for it when he was lost for the season early on. He's been getting reinjured ever since then, and is no longer the same player (a la Terrell Davis, who I am sorry to see deteriorate... but it may mean that Miami Hurricane Clinton Portis gets to play, which would be totally cool).

Bottom line? I just feel that Anderson's too banged-up to be a decent RB anymore. Sad but true.

I certainly think someone will give him a chance if he, like Terrell Davis, signed for the veteran minimum with plenty of incentives.

Who that would be? I don't know.

You have to watch the incentives because they could count against this years cap. According to cap rules, if the incentive bonus is easily obtainable, then the bonus will count against this years cap even if it has not been achieved.

I wouldn't be surprised to see JA pull a Terry Allen, recover fully, and stick it to the Falcons every chance he gets like Allen did to Minnesota.

i think the guy who could make the biggest impact here is mccardell. he's narrowed his choices down to the bucs, patriots, and chiefs and should do well any of those places.

i'd like to see jamal come back and do well, but i just don't see it happening. i doubt the cowgirls would give him a chance either since troy hambrick was very solid last year.

i think they've got a better wr than any of those free agents in david terrell...maybe they'll play him more this year.

Quagmire, I think Terrell is a hell of a talent. To me though I want a third option which is able to pull attention too. Right now they have Booker and Terrell which is great, but then who? Dez White? D'Wayne Bates? "Mr. Glass" Marcus Robinson? Gimme a 3 wideout set of Booker, Terrell and Freeman, A-Train in the backfield, and anyone but Miller at QB (I know it's not good when Chris Chandler looks like an upgrade!) and I like that offense.

Some folks believe that Green Bay may make a play for Derrick Alexander to complement the enigmatic Terry Glenn. I personally think the Pack would benefit from the extra depth at that position, especially if Glenn turns into a bust.

Derrick Alexander is now a Viking. Randy Moss and Alexander make a scary combo, if Moss decides he's a football player next year.

Keenan McCardell is now a Buccaneer. And may I say, YES. This will likely result in Keyshawn Johnson moving into the slot receiver position, and if third round pick WR Marquise Walker amounts to anything, a WR crew that has been a huge disappointment for the last four years could potentially become one of the league's best.

One thing Jamal Anderson needs to do is go to a team with grass instead of turf. Just a thought.

I think McCardell makes more of an impact with Tampa than Alexander does with Minnesota, Tampa is beginning to look downright scary to me, they've gotta win a Bowl here soon don't they?

On my personal front, I'm still trying to figure out why Darnay Scott wasn't on that list. The Bengals don't need that guy, sure they have enough room to keep him, but he's a waste of space with Warrick, Chad Johnson, Farmer, Dugans, and Houshmanzadeh (no way that's right) all there. Anyway, talent-wise, the Bengals look poised for a break-out year, but alas, they'll probably go 6-10.

And now Hardy Nickerson has signed with, and will start for, the Green Bay Packers. He should provide some help in that defense, though he didn'd reach the levels in Jacksonville that he did before leaving the Bucs.
