Well, Holyfield certainly deserves it. He's 4-4 in his last 8 fights, and coming off a tremendous 12-round beating at the hands of all-time great Sultan Ibragimov (sp).

Am I the only one waiting for the inevitable "Holyfield dies in the ring" headline? Sad to see a guy pushing 50 with previous heart problems having to still get into the ring because he drained his money away. Even sadder that this is *still* considered one of boxing's most marketable figures.

You're cherry-picking that "4-4 in his last 8"-stat, Handsome One. He's 4-1 in his last five fights.

On the one hand, obviously I agree that this is totally farcical. OTOH, Valuev was supposed to fight Chagaev before he got hurt, and this isn't really any worse than W. Klitschko choosing to fight Hasim Rahman (4-0 with a NC in his last five, with the four wins coming against arguably worse fighters than Holyfield beat in HIS last four wins) in lieu of Povetkin getting hurt, is it?

(What I'm saying is, you can't blame Holyfield for being a guy can fight, and beat, and make money against. There just aren't too many of those guy out there and as long as Evander keeps fighting he's one of them.)

I am very interested in watching David Haye against Monte Barrett tomorrow. Haye might be the man to rescue the heavyweight division.

This is unbelievable. I really wish these fighters would stay away. I realize that is easy for someone that is not willing to get beat up for a living to say, but this is part of what has made boxing really go down the toilet. I really hope that some state commission has enough sense to not allow him to fight someday, before its too late.

It is also too bad that when I think Evander Holyfield, I think of him as a chocolate easter bunny, with his ears eaten off.

Is Holyfield in the same territory as Foreman was when he last won a title?

Foreman was two month shy of his 46th birthday when he knocked out Michael Moorer. Evander will be a couple of months past his 46th birthday when he fights Valuev.

By way of comparison, though, Foreman went into the Moorer fight with a record of 27-2 with 24 KOs since his career restart in 1987, and he'd only lost to a then-undefeated undisputed World Champion Holyfield and a 36-1 at-the-time Tommy Morrison (for the WBO belt).

Holyfield, OTOH, is 6-5-1 with 3 KOs since he lost his rematch with Lennox Lewis - and that includes a four-bout winning streak over guys you only know if you (a) REALLY love boxing or (b) at related to them. Not quite the same spot in their careers.

That already happened after he got blown out by Larry Donald in 2004. He just found somewhere else to fight.

Dale Jr's motorcoach should be overflowing today with flowers, fruit baskets and thank you notes from guys like Allmendinger, Sadler and Waltrip. But seriously, I can't help but laugh at all the Junior apologists.
