First of all, if you don't like seeing ads on this board, you really should register and stay logged in, and then you won't have a problem.
We shouldn't have to remind you of this, but any advertisements you see here on The W which have a Google notification somewhere along the top or bottom are fed to us via our Adsense agreement and we have no knowledge ahead of time of what ads G decides should be coming up.
We specifically do not endorse or necessarily agree with any of the advocacy which may or may not be expressed in any of our ads. We just display them, and it's up to you to decide whether they're worth your click, or (more likely) worth ignoring.
We will remind you that we do not even live in California, so we won't be voting one way or the other on ANY of their propositions. We also think it's a bit amusing to see money spent on this when our visitors from California make such a small percentage of our overall guests geographically that it seems like a giant waste of money - then again, we have that opinion about a whole lot of people spending a whole lot of money on a whole lot of other ads as well. But... that's another story.
The bottom line is, if you REALLY want to know what we think of Proposition 8, you are free to ask us (somewhere else), but don't let the fact that a "No on 8" or "Yes on 8" ad is appearing on this site trick you into thinking that we had ANYTHING to do with it showing up, above and beyond our initial agreement to let G display whatever ads they think will get a response - or that we are endorsing whichever particular view is represented by whichever ad happens to be on our page at any given time.
That's a whole lotta words, but I hope it makes things clear. Don't get me wrong - like I said above, I have a lot of opinions, and I even have some about this...but they sure as heck don't belong in this statement. ;-)

Did someone give you grief about your/the board's "stance" on this issue or something?
BTW, I meant to take pics of all the "Yes on 8" demonstrators that have been marching in my neighborhood every weekend and post about it. Not a 'yea' or 'nay' post, but a general "Look how passionate people are about this thing" post. It looked like a freakin marathon or one of those "10k AIDS WALKS" or something out there. The streets were JAMMED with people carrying signs and yelling crap at drivers and drivers yelling (and sometimes throwing) stuff back. It was crazy.
The Yes on 8 ads have been getting a lot of publicity on some of the webcomics I visit. As webcomic authors are a more liberal than average group, they've taken to banning them.
Thanks for the clarification. I'd always been under the belief that, regardless of the political views of the members, the board itself is neutral in its political leanings.

What's Proposition 8, anyhow?
The board is far from neutral in opinion We just allow for more conversation than a lot of places do. We are also very lenient in our moderation of extreme positions, believe it or not.
I should probably make a separate post going over our policy about racism and hate speech, what with the recent election and all.

In a nutshell, that's what it is. More specifically, it overturns a recent state supreme court decision allowing gays to marry by defining marriage in the state constitution as being between a man and a woman.
I believe it's similar in nature to the propositions that passed in Florida in Arizona, the only difference being that gay marriage was already "banned" in those states, whereas it was recently legalized in California.
FWIW, Prop 8 passed by a VERY slim margin, thus dampening my cheeriness on what was a fairly successful day.
Originally posted by WhitebaconThe state Supreme Court overturned a previous, similar proposition, fwiw.
The previous propostition changed the "California Family Code" (not the constitution) and was struck down by the California Supreme Court. Which is why Prop 8 went after and amended the California State Constitution itself, which, I believe, puts it beyond the reach of the State Supreme Court; now it would have to go Federal to be overturned.
(not an expert)
(EDIT! And, in fact, the ACLU and other groups are already petitioning the CA Supreme Court; we'll see how that goes.)
(ANOTHER EDIT! Here's what the ACLU says: "The California Constitution itself sets out two ways to alter the document that sets the most basic rules about how state government works. Through the initiative process, voters can make relatively small changes to the constitution. But any measure that would change the underlying principles of the constitution must first be approved by the legislature before being submitted to the voters. That didn't happen with Proposition 8, and that's why it's invalid." --Click Here (aclu.org))
(I know this isn't really the forum for this; apologies)

Funny you mention this. There have been a few nights when I was trying to get home to Santa Monica by bus and the gosh darn protesters had the streets blocked and the police were out and ready in riot gear... yeah, RIOT GEAR! Crazy!
Last Wednesday night, I was stuck at the corner of Santa Monica and La Brea waiting on a bus that, as I figured out later, wasn't going to come because of all the mess.
There were dozens of people like myself totally pissed off at the protesters cause, well you know... we just wanted to go home and go to bed. It was really annoying.
