So with anywhere from 54 to 57 Senate seats without the two independents, what do the Democrats do with Joe Liberman? They don't have 60 with him, they still have a majority without him.

Yeah, nothing says "socialist" to me like forcing people to hand a bunch of money over to private health insurance companies. Right.
In a country that already has government-run waste pickup, schools, retirement funds, mail delivery and transportation - to name just a few - and recently spent a trillion dollars to nationalize struggling financial firms, I fail to see what Obama proposes that moves the country any close to socialism than it already is. Obama simply proposes actually taxing people so we can pay for all these long-established (and Republican approved!) socialist programs. It's one of the few things he gets right.

They probably allow him to keep his chairmanship as a way of thanking him for allowing them to get the Senate 2 years earlier than they would have without him. Plus, if it is a 54-44-2 margin then it is just 1 swing of the pendulum in 2010 from Lieberman being in a spot where he could flip it the other way if he has been isolated.

And when the inevitable mass shooting occurs and the Obama and the dems decide to infringe on my constitutional rights, I'll speak to.

I would like to think that wherever he is, Dr. King would be smiling today. Unfortunately, since there are still "people" who believe the nonsense quoted above, it would be short-lived with the realization that much work still needed to be done.

Yeah, but isn't Lieberman's seat up in 2010? I don't see how the Dems can overlook his aggressive support of McCain in this campaign. Maybe they kick him to the curb and focus on nabbing his seat with someone else in the mid-term election? Maybe Lieberman would be too tough to beat? I wonder if Lieberman will run for the Democrat nomination again?
EDIT: Actually, Lieberman's up in 2012 now that I think about it.
My parents and I used to debate every election about what we would have first - an African-American president or a female president - and we always ended up agreeing that it would be a female first because we thought there was a lot more rampant racism than sexism in America. Even though there are still pockets of racism in this country it absolutely blows my mind (in a good way) that we have an African-American president.
Congrats to everyone who voted (even if your candidates didn't win) and here's hoping that both sides of the aisle are not so angry at each other after the next 4 years.

They already tried that. He won as part of the 'Connecticut for Lieberman' party. If the Democrats are smart, they'll let bygones be bygones.

If the Democrats are smart they will let Lieberman stay as an independent or try to have him become a Democrat again. Die hard party loyalists who punish their members who stray from the fold are not good things. Nothing would help out the GOP more than the DNC becoming more liberal and dogmatic.
Marge I am just trying to get into heaven not run for Jesus.
Despite their differences in ideology I really think we couldn't truly lose with either candidate so I was going to be fine with either choice at President (as opposed to the last two elections where I was sad to horrified at either choice). I do feel ultimately, that Obama will be the better choice in the long run in that he will be able to get things done and will hopefully begin to rehabilitate our image on a global basis.
On a more local level that still affects the national picture, I'm sorry that we couldn't end Mitch McConnell's tenure as Senator although Lunsford gave him a very good fight. Ultimately, I feel the difference was that with Kentucky seen as such a non-factor nationally with neither Obama or McCain making very few trips here (which is understood from an electoral college standpoint - only 8 votes) people wore worried that if McConnell was out, then we would lose our national voice in Washington.
I'm glad that John Yarmuth kept his seat in the House, and from a totally selfish profesional standpoint, I'm sorry we couldn't get the casino issue on the ballot so that we would truly know if the good people of the Commonwealth, not just those in power, wanted casino gaming in the state.

Originally posted by TheBucsFanI can't *believe* Ted Stevens appears to be holding onto his Senate seat. I know he probably won't actually take the seat, but what is that state thinking voting for that man? If seven felony corruption convictions isn't enough for the voters to remove him, what is?
They're thinking that, if he can't take the seat, the governor can appoint someone to replace him. Don'cha know. Think about it. You know who she's going to appoint, don't you? You don't really think she's going away just like that, do you? Senator Sarah Palin. *shudder* Let us not let that ruin our celebration.
Lieberman didn't "stray from the fold." He spoke at the GOP convention for God's sake. He openly campaigned as a surrogate for the Republican nominee and trashed the Democratic Party.
Maybe the Democrats shouldn't publicly humiliate him by kicking out of the Caucus, but there's no way in Hell he should keep a chairman seat in the new Democratic Senate.

It would actually be a special election, not a governor's appointment, then again, she'd probably win easily, if she decided to run.
Cast Lieberman out of the caucus. Let him try and win in CT after actually being part of the GOP Senate caucus. He wants to work for the GOP, let him rot with them.
I am proud to be an American today. It's been a while since I have been able to whole heartedly say that.
I also thought both candidates would make good presidents, but Obama brings a lot more to the table in terms of healing the country, and culturally advancing our society, IMO.

For the first time in my life I felt like my vote actually mattered. More to the fact, I *wanted* my vote to matter, and it did. Elation throughout the house tonight.
John McCain did give one of hell of a classy speech. His acknowledgment of not only this moment for African Americans, but also Obama's grandmother was very thoughtful of him. It was sadly telling though that when he even mentioned Obama people boo-ed, and when Obama mentioned McCain people actually applauded.
That being said, Obama gave one hell of an inspiring speech and I for one am glad he's to be the next President.

I'm not sure who or what you voted for, but I'm glad there aren't enough people in America like you for you to get your way.
Because we have seen John Kerry's plan for education, and it is good (just as we've seen his plan for the war, and appointment of justices, and..um..never mind) Check the new sig! -Jag
