Welcome home, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard! Good luck to those down south.

From this WrestleWorld link:

Mexico City, MX (October 25, 2008) – Centro Banamex Convention Center was a history making site as it hosted the NWA™ Worlds Heavyweight Championship match featuring Adam Pearce Vs. Blue Demon, Jr. In the end, Blue Demon, Jr. won the famous “10 lbs. of Gold” in a very controversial fashion.

“I passed out while Demon had me in a Half Boston Crab and when I woke up I was told that I was under the rope and the Referee had stopped that match. This is clearly against the NWA Rule Book and I will be taking this up with Trobich. Demon, you are not the NWA Worlds Champion,” said former champion Adam Pearce.

“I think Pearce has a case. I’ve reviewed the footage and he is in the right, his arm is under the rope, but in the NWA, the Referee’s decision if final,” states Ruben Zamora of NWA Latin American Relations.

Blue Demon, Jr. is the first Mexican and Masked Wrestler to ever win the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship in the six decades the National Wrestling Alliance has been in business.

(Unless you count the Midnight Rider, right?)

You know, I actually have access to an honest-to-goodness copy of the NWA rulebook...I'll have to check it and get back to you on Pearce's (a former All-Star Championship Wrestling heavyweight titleholder) claim. OMG TITLE CONTROVERSY

Whether or not the title change has anything to do with Pearce's new gig as ROH head booker, I dunno.

(EDIT: Video highlights of the match and post-match promos from Blue Demon and Pearce.)

I totally wrote about this someplace else, but I tend to forget there are stories that people over here may care about.

- I was expecting the decision to be overturned as soon as they got the right people on flights out of Mexico, but it was about 24 hours before the Pearce/ROH story broke and that changes how this looks.

After the match, besides the complaints about the finish, they made a big deal about how Pearce was now all the way down to #10 on their top contenders list. That seems kinda odd for the guy who just lost the title, but obviously now it seems more like they're going away from him from now. I believe Meltzer said Pearce wasn't done in the NWA, but surely he's got to step back for a few months.

- I don't think I've ever heard Demon do a promo in English before. That was odd.

- Blue Demon is the president of the NWA territory in Mexico. Apparently, and you may have to check the rule book for this one too, you can't be president of a territory and NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

Demon's given up the presidency, and there's supposed to be some announcement about who's in charge now. Of course, he's feuding with El Dandy and Dandy said he'd like to be president...

OK, I've checked the rule book. (Yes, I really have a copy from the NWA.)

Section 1, Paragraph 4, sub-section A:

"A hold shall not be allowed if either contestant is in physical contact with the ropes or if any part of either contestant's body is outside the vertical plane of the ring ropes. The referee will instruct the wrestler applying the hold in such cases to desist, and the wrestler applying the hold will have five seconds as counted off by the referee in which to comply."

As for the referee's-decision-is-final; well, that's covered by Section 2, Paragraph 2, sub-section B, line 1:

"The referee shall be in complete charge of any wrestling match to which he is assigned."

So the rules really DO back up the booking: Pearce got screwed, but due to the ref's call, Demon legit holds the NWA world title. Only Bob Trobich can reverse the decision.

Sorry, nothing on whether a territory owner or not can hold an NWA-sanctioned championship. But throwing somebody over the top rope in a non-battle royal match IS still grounds for an automatic DQ. :-)

And they still call this DQ in Mexico, from time to time.

How many worlds can you be the champion of? The inner planets? Those outside the asteroid belt? The fashion world?

The least Pearce's manager could do is put Pearce's hand ON the rope.

Hold on there, young padawan. Let Us Take You Back To (tm CRZ)...well, the rule book again.

Section 1, Paragraph 3, sub-section M:

"Any interference in a match on a part of an individual who is not a designated participant shall be gronds for the disqualification of the contestant(s) who, in the referee's judgment, was being aided by said interference. this stipulation shall apply to managers and seconds, as well as to any other parties who illegally involve themselves in a wrestling match."

So had C. Edward VanderPyle put Pearce's hand on the ropes (and from that position, odds are the ref would've seen it), said ref could've DQ'd Pearce. Which would've let him keep the NWA title.

So sayeth Section 3, Paragraph 5, sub-section C:

"Championships cannot change hands on a disqualification ruling unless so stipulated in the contract."

Parquet Wishes and Leprechaun Dreams

The most hilarious thing about Tommy Dreamer is that everyone else in WWE, from Shelton Benjamin to dudes who haven't even debuted yet, has a T-shirt available. WWE doesn't even bother printing up a T-shirt for Tommy Dreamer, A MAN WHOSE GIMMICK IS WEARING A T-SHIRT WHILE WRESTLING. And why is that? Because not a god damn person would ever pay money for a Tommy Dreamer shirt. Not even his own mother. As a result he usually ends up wearing a shirt that says "WRESTLEMANIA 24" or "JUDGEMENT DAY." I think it's time for Tommy Dreamer to just print up a T-shirt that says "UPCOMING PAY PER VIEW"

Wasn't it in the NWA rulebook that a masked wrestler could not be World Champion, thus the Midnight Rider either had to unmask or not receive the belt when he defeated Flair while Dusty was away due to losing on X-Mas night 1982 in a Loser's Leave Town Match to Kevin Sullivan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW-VJm41tZ4. Funny how the Sullivan/Rhodes match occurred on the same night that the Kerry Von Erich/Ric Flair match that started the Freebirds/Von Erich war occurred.
Also, I believe Mr. Wrestling (or II) could not claim the belt after beating Harley Race in the 70's due to his not wanting to remove his mask.

If I remember my Apter mags correctly, The Midnight Rider didn't have to unmask "in public." He had to do it in the back in front of NWA Prez Bob Geigel.

In theory, the same rule COULD apply to Blue Demon. He would just need to show himself in private to Dave Marquez or whomever is NWA President these days.

The mere fact that there exists a rulebook for professional wrestling astounds me. Imagine that conversation.

-Hey Charlie, I need to you to write up the official rules of wrestling.

-But... I thought you could just pretty much make up whatever rules you want to?

-Well, we can. But we want to have a rulebook in place to cite when we want some decision to sound controversial.

-Couldn't you just "refer" to it, without it actually existi... Eh, whatever, as long as you're still paying me by the hour.

eBay: nope.

Online: best I could find you was this inside back cover of a 1974 Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling program. (I did find a claim that Dory Funk's website hosts it, but I couldn't find it there.)

And sorry, I can't release it to you. That decision's gotta be made by Ed Chuman at NWA Midwest. You can E-mail him at: edchuman@midwestwrestling.com

All of this rulebook stuff was getting a little silly, but that takes the cake. I need to email this guy to get a copy of a book full of rules that may or may not actually be enforced at anytime?

Awwww... poor Forsty.

Here, as a consolation, I give you the entire IWS rulebook:

1. There are no rules.
2. Whatever the referee says goes.
3. When in doubt, consult rule number one.

I just worked a show in Tulsa that Blue Demon Jr. was on. Dave Marquez introduced him as the NWA promoter in Mexico. That show was on October 3rd.

Blue Demon Jr. was never seen without the mask in the locker room, parking lot, backstage, anywhere. I saw him on his cell phone and listening to his MP3 player all with the mask on. The mask was untied so he had the earplug to the MP3 player going up the mask on the side.

Apparently he had two masks. One to wear in the locker room and one for the ring. He did a quick change from one to the other and we never saw his face. Apparently he keeps the mask on all the way to the hotel from what I have been told.
