It seemed to be my understanding that the force most responsible for driving the Houston Oilers out of Houston was... well, the city of Houston. The stands were never filled, the votes didn't go the team's way, the city, I remember the media saying, was largely responsible for losing their own team.

So why in the magenta hell would the NFL reward Houston by giving them an expansion team starting in 2002? Wouldn't it have made more sense to go to-- shudder-- Los Angeles or one of the other cities petitioning, like Toronto?

But noooooooo. Those who refuse to learn from the past, as they say, are doomed to repeat it. And mark my words. If the Texans fail to win immediately, the stands will be empty as soon as the commodity runs out. And there will be no alternative but to move another team out of Houston.

Or maybe not. Who knows?

And that, as they say, is that.

Houston is a big city, with a large viewing audience, and a ready arena (the AstroDome - or whatever it's called now).

Add money, and that's enough for the NFL.

L.A. is a big market, but I don't believe anyone there came up with a stadium deal (at least one that didn't anger the Raiders) or enough money.

Conventional wisdom is that LA is being kept open as a "threat" for relocation, rather than expansion.

Plus, LA is actually better served, viewing wise, by having no teams and thus allowing maximum number of games shown.

Let's talk about why the Oilers left Houston. Bud Adams had held the city hostage 5 different times. He wanted more seats in the Astrodome, a new lease agreement, a new stadium, etc. This was during one of the darkest econimic times in Houston. The city had enough of his BS, especially during that time. The empty seats did not start until the team was announced to be leaving. They played for 2 or 3 years with us knowing they were gone, but the attendance never dropped below an average of 25k, with 5 sell outs the last year. But the empty seats were more about the organization and ownership than team. I am a sports fan, love football, but at the time I was ready to see them go too. You can only take so much. So your theory is not totally correct.

This is the same town who puts 25k asses in the seats for a High School game, so don't act like people will not go see football.

LA was awarded the team. Houston was the 2nd choice. LA could not get a new stadium in place so Houston got the team. We had a new stadium planned and funded so we got the team. We get the Super Bowl in 2004 as well.

The Bottom line is I live in Houston, I know what is going on. The fans love football, hell people drive from Houston to Dallas and New Orleans just to see live NFL football. The team will succeed, we would still have the Oilers if the Owner had waited and not been such an ass. But that is the nature of sports today.

DK,

OK, I'll accept your interpretation of what happened, since you live in Houston and since at the time, I was just then really starting to pay attention to the NFL.

But why, pray tell, does bloody Houston get the Super Bowl, when many cities haven't had one ever or, at least, once in the last 30 years? Has Cleveland ever had a Super Bowl? Green Bay? Did St. Louis get it when the Rams moved there? Oakland, when the Raiders returned? I simply don't see the thought process here.

We get the Super Bowl because the owner pay 800 Million dollars for the team. Also we have the first retractable roof stadium and they want to show off to the rest of the league what a new stadium can do for their team. Actually, goto houstontexans.com and check the stadium out. It is awesome. Also weather is a consideration. Cleveland in January? I don't think that will ever be a good place and time for a Super Bowl. Also you have to have a certain number of boxes and hotels, etc. There is an unofficial rotation for the Super Bowl that Houston is now a part of. Warm weather cities with many hotels and golf courses.

Houston is the 4th largest city in the US, not some hickville dump.

But, dude. The NFL already sends their greatest players to the Pro Bowl in Honolulu every year-- doesn't get much more warm-weather than that. Plus, it seems to me that many of the best teams are cold-weather teams, and some of them play their playoff games in downright frigid weather. So what would be wrong with having a Super Bowl in a cold-weather city, when last year the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants (both cold-weather teams) were in the final game of the season?

I'm not saying Houston's a hick city, I just don't understand why the NFL can't give more cities a chance at hosting the Super Bowl, instead of resorting to the same old four-or-five-city rotation. Of course, it'll put butts in the seats either way, but why not use the opportunity to sell some tickets in cities whose teams aren't doing so well?

At least, that's the way I see it. I do see your side of it, however, and respect your opinion.

Shhh with your cold weather city talk. San Diego gets the superbowl around 2 times a decade - I'm happy with this! Don't screw it up!

Its not about the teams at the Super Bowl. Watch NFL Films Super Bowl recaps that they do this time of year in the afternoon on ESPN and look for Super Bowl XVI in Detroit. Even though it was domed in, it was a disaster for people to get there. Also, if it wasn't in warm weather, we wouldn't have the pleasure of seeing the boy band of the week perform with an aging rock act. What could be better marketing then having O-town perform at halftime for football fans? Perhaps when FOX kept promoting the World's Sexiest Bachelor program during football games last year, but I'm getting off topic.

The first Super Bowl was in Los Angeles and the second was in Miami, so its always been like this.

"As she fell face down into the black muck of the mud-wrestling pit, her sweaty, 300-pound opponent muttering soft curses in Latin on top of her, Sister Marie thought, "There is no doubt about it; the Pope has betrayed me."

Keith is right. The Super Bowl is not only about the game. There is an entire week of activities that take place throughout the city. Golf Tournaments, Charity rallies, Fan Fests, NFL promotions, etc. You need good weather for all of that. They have already announced most of the activities taking place during that week and they could not take place in a town covered by snow. Back to the game, the Ice Bowl was an example of what the NFL does NOT want to happen for their Super Bowl. You do not want the weather to play any part in who is the real NFL champion.

Also, you have tourists all over the world coming to see the game. You want them to have a good time, not have to dig their way out of their hotel.

Either way it sounds like you have it in for Houston. You bash the Texans, saying they will be a failure before we play our first game and have to move, you bash Houston as being the choice for the 2004 Super Bowl. I guess next you are going to be pissed for us getting the MLB All Star game in 2004 also. Maybe they should move NASA also.

Of course, Super Bowl Week isn't really for the fans anyway. How many of them actually get to go to the game?

Personally, I don't have a great deal of sympathy for fat cat corporate sponsors who might be inconvenienced by having to curtail their outdoor activities.

Lots of sportswriters (including Mike Wilbon on PTI today) say that Minneapolis actually put on a good Super Bowl when they hosted it.

I'd love to have one in GB, but there are rules that the NFL set for minimum temperature and hotel rooms and the like. Regardless of what Pat Summerall said this weekend, Green Bay's population of about 100,000 (not 50,000) doesn't have enough hotels for the NFL, let alone the temperature problems. Do you recall the whining about the "cold" temperatures in Atlanta last year? It should be interesting if the 2007 games goes to New York or Washington, as the latest sympathy talks make it sound like will happen.

As for Honolulu, there's too much to do there, and the Pro Bowl doesn't really rate as an event. It's the least important of the "Big 4" All Star games by any measurement.

Since Bud Addams is out in Houston, I think the team will be well supported. The end was really a revolt against the owner, not the team (it appeared from the outside).

Super Bowl I was held in the LA Coliseum. Super Bowl II was held in the Orange Bowl in Miami. You proabaly think they were in Green Bay because of the grainy NFL Films footage that looks like the Ice Bowl, which was held in Green Bay (it was the NFC Championship Game before Super Bowl II.)

Have you ever noticed how many times it's rained during the Super Bowl? Almost never. The NFL isn't going to have their championship game in a city that could have a downpour or snowstorm if they can avoid it, so all the northern NFL cities can forget about ever having a Super Bowl unless they have a dome.

To add yet another comment on the "Why the Oilers Left" debate from a slightly different perspective, I lived in Memphis when the Oilers decided to crash here for (what was then) 2 years while the new stadium was built in Nashville. First off, the interest simply wasn't here - a mediocre team that the city's not even going to keep wasn't going to draw any interest. (If you want to debate the mediocrity, they were, I believe, 8-8 that year, as well as the next one.) Adams then proceeded to screw the fans and city of Memphis over (by various things, such as prices, that the citizens simply weren't used to by what they had seen previous to that; of course, with the arrival of the Grizzlies, they're getting used to it, but I digress), which the Sports Commission allowed without a problem. However, Adams ducked out of his lease after a year, thus nailing Memphis again. Needless to say, not many people here like Adams. Houston deserves another shot - preferably not with an owner like Adams.

This has been said numerous times before, but the Soper Bowl is normally held somewhere south simply because of the climate at the time (and the events leading up to it).

I was reading something recently which said that Tagliabue wants to change the current rule that says cold-weather cities can only get Super Bowls if they have a domed stadium. I'd love to see a Super Bowl in Chicago or New York. Instead of every few years going to Orlando or CA. I'd still support every few years in New Orleans though, cuz it's freakin' New Orleans!

There, I feel better now.

Bud Adams is a world-class A-hole. We hated him, but loved our Oilers. But in the end, there was no way in hell they could have stayed with him as the owner.

I was not aware of his exploits out in Tennessee. Sounds like he didn't change his ways at all.
