Velvet Sky vs. Christy Hemme: Wow, so to kick off their BIG LIVE SHOW and their HD debut, they decide to start off with a match between two of the worst wrestlers on the roster? Obviously "workrate" isn't the premier concern here (for further evidence, check out Impact's new opening video, which features only two references to the Knockout division: a shot of Kong's face, and a shot of Velvet's ass) but still. This is pretty bad. Angelina Love and "Cute" Kip offer token interference but Hemme wins with the FFG.

Jeremy Borash is lounging in back with Kurt Angle, Booker T, Sharmell, and Kevin Nash as they make their evil plans. They have a new cohort -- it's STING, who enters the room wearing shades, a suit, and a heel turn. They're banding together to demand respect and protect their spots: they are THE MAIN EVENT MAFIA.

(I like the stable name. It encapsulates them nicely -- a group of guys working together and using nefarious means to keep the spotlight on themselves.)

Booker T, now in the ring, reveals what's in the case: the new LEGENDS TITLE, with a swanky red leather strap. It's his; he holds it. Christian Cage comes out and mocks Booker's haircut, his accent, and his self-appointed championship. Booker never beat anyone for that belt; how about he put it on the line at Turning Point. Booker agrees, but: if Cage loses, he has to join the Mafia! Cage will have to think about this.

Matt Morgan doesn't want Abyss competing tonight, because he's Abyss's BFF and Abyss is in pain. I suspect Abyss will not listen.

Abdul Bashir vs. Jay Lethal: Sorry, I blinked and missed this completely. Apparently Bashir won.

Hey, there's a video package for Suicide. Th' dirt sheets were reporting that he was on hold because Kaz is injured. I wonder what's up.

Rhino and Bashir argue backstage; Rhino wants Bashir deported and Bashir wants Rhino's junk to get a good solid kick. Only one of them gets what they want, so I think Bashir won the debate.

This will lead to a match, of course; I hope it's for the X title, and I think it would be pretty cool if Rhino won it. It could really be a breath of fresh air for a title largely belittled and ignored. Of course it probably won't be, and the match will probably end up being a flag-on-a-pole match or something. I kinda wish this feud could be because "Bashir is an asshole," not because "Bashir is a foreigner."

Team 3D vs. Beer Money vs. LAX vs. Matt Morgan and Abyss: This is a gauntlet match, where the last two guys left get their partners back and it becomes a tag match. Oh, and there's texting: before the match, texting determined entrance order; during the match, texting determines what weapon becomes legal once it turns into a tag match, Mike Tenay explains to us. Okay.

This started out pretty well, but made no sense by the end, with the already-eliminated Devon coming back in to help Ray eliminate Abyss (after failing to put him through a table, the legal weapon, even though I didn't think it was legal yet, going by what Tenay said at the beginning), which left only 3D and Beer Money, although Beer Money had been on the outside fighting with Morgan for the last several minutes. Yeah.

Robert Roode goes through the table, but Jackie Moore pulls out the ref. James Storm spits beer in Devon's face and rolls him up for the pin.

Taylor Wilde vs. Awesome Kong: Wilde is spunky, but after a distraction from Raisha Saeed, Kong kills her with an Awesomebomb. Wilde's too-good-to-be-true reign is over, long live the Kong.

Hey, Nick Bockwinkle!

Kevin Nash & Sting vs. Samoa Joe & AJ Styles: It's still surreal watching Styles get offense on guys like Nash and Sting. Match is okay. Nash drills Joe between the eyes with Sting's title belt and pins him.

Joe and Styles heroically jump the legends from behind, and Booker and Angle come down to the rescue; Booker pops Styles across the noggin with the Legends belt (welcome to TNA, Legends belt!). The Mafia stands tall while the Originals are bloody and crumpled.

Mick Foley comes down to the ring after it's cleared out. He has a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT which he takes his sweeeeeeet time getting round to...no, the Mafia are back to interrupt him, and Angle gets in the ring and headbutts Foley. Foley finds this amusing, because...he's now a major stockholder in TNA! Angle just headbutted his BOSS! THE IRONY IS DELICIOUS. Foley says that Angle has a choice...he can MAKE HISTORY...or he can BE HISTORY.

Pretty weak show.

The Legends titles is a pretty swank looking belt. They should have made THAT the TNA championship.

There are pictures available at TNA's website. Check it out.

Main Event Mafia? Certainly they could have found a better name for their stable, right? Booker T/Christian Cage dynamic is interesting.

Is Las Vegas now another Bizarro World? I mean, the crowd was cheering the heels for a good part of the night.

Is anyone buying Sting's heel turn? It makes me wonder, has he ever been a credible heel?

Let's see, the last time Russo turned Sting heel in WCW, he used Metallica's "Seek and Destroy" as his new music, still walked to the ring slapping fans hands, and his menacing catchphrase was "It's showtime, folks!"

So I'd say not so much, no.

Nit pick: Sting actually turned heel just before Russo signed.

I don't know, but he looked pretty uninterested during the beatdown segment.

I thought maybe he was going for the "boss let's the other guys they the beatdown", similar to a godfather, or Hollywood Hogan, but I am not sure. Actually, I am not really sure he is the leader. The group as a whole aren't technically heels though, are they? What have they done that is worse than the things Joe, AJ, and even the Machine Guns have done over the last month or so?

Of the 4 Mafia guys, they are all difficult to boo, because they have been so entertaining over the years. Perhaps they will get nastier over the next few weeks. Plus, your heels are only as good as your strong faces, so they need to make sure Joe and AJ keep up their end of the bargain. Something WCW failed to do most of the time with the NWO.

Yeah, this is the problem. I suspect (and may have said before) that this will consist of a lot of "paying lip service" to the idea of elevating the young guys, but in actuality we'll be focusing on the Mafia almost exclusively. (Just like, hey, last night.)

It seemed to me that the Vegas crowd were cheering everybody, heel and face. They did boo people like Sheik Bashir, but not even then did they do it heartily. I mean, they loved Booker T, but then cheered Christian making fun of him.

The show overall was nothing special, with the usual illogical booking and bad direction (we completely missed the ref getting pulled out of the ring). The Royal Rumble Hardcore Text Your Weapon Gauntlet Whattamajigger was amazingly complicated.

And of course, the big announcement that would change the face of wrestling was the introduction of another Foley as commish-type deal. Really? Seriously?

Read it and weep, fella

When will TNA stop with the "THIS SINGLE ANGLE/ACQUISITION/GIMMICK RIGHT HERE WILL BE WHAT FINALLY PUTS US OVER THE TOP!!!" style of booking? I mean, not every announcement or main event match or stipulation can be the greatest [thing] ever, can it?

And what ever happened to BG James?

Other than Sting the Mafia is absolutely heels. Booker T and Kurt Angle both had about a month as faces to get the debut cheers but have been all-heel all the time ever since. Kevin Nash has been a face for a while but just turned on Joe at the PPV making the switch to heel.

I understand that AJ, Joe and MCMG have done some prickish things lately and that was bad booking on TNA's part but I think you can chalk that up to them being undecisive about which side is face and which side is heel. Besides the Mafia has still been way worse. What have AJ, Joe and MCMG done? Be pricks? Because Booker just gave himself a title declaring him the biggest legend in TNA. Kurt made fun of his wife, daughter and a guy whose wife died of cancer. Kevin Nash just cost Joe the title. I'd say they are still ahead on bad deed points.

I might be in the minority but I find it pretty easy to boo the Mafia. I LOVED Booker T and Kurt in WWE, Sting in WCW and yes I even ate up the original nWo. But I don't want to see those guys anymore. I want to see AJ, Joe, MCMG, Christian, LAX, Daniels. So maybe it's just me but I find it easy to boo them. I understand that new fans will probably be inclined to cheer for the Mafia since they are recognizable but last time I checked TNA wasn't getting any new fans. As for holding up their part of the bargain, I'd say the Mafia is the one not holding up their part of the bargain. Kurt has done very well, especially considering injuries, but Booker, Sting and Nash have done nothing for TNA. Joe and AJ and even MCMG and LAX on the other hand have been stellar, just booked improperly/not pushed on a regular basis.

That was a lot of comments on one post. I'm not trying to nitpick your post or anything. Just had a lot to say about the Mafia vs. AJ/Joe/whoever else. I think if they go forward with these sides it's all good except for Sting. I even like the idea of forcing Christian to join the Mafia but still keeping him face by showing he isn't happy to be a part of them.

I began the program and turned it off as soon as I saw the audience. When they said "live show," I imagined a house show in an arena. That was a hotel conference room. That's embarrassing.

Live from Las Vegas ...

(Yeah, I'm behind. But I'm quite sure I was live during the event.)

I'm of the impression that the ImpactZone in Orlando is only about 300 people. I'm guessing the venue in Las Vegas was 500-600. They just weren't all that great at packing the crowd properly & down-lighting the backgrounds. TNA actually ended up doing some last minute seat shuffling to "pack" the space better than the initial layout. This was good for me -- I ended up with a free upgrade from way in the back to row 3. That was cool.

Live show was fun! Yeah, it didn't come across anywhere as rowdy on TV as it was being there.

No "warm up" match(es). Rather, JB came out at about 5:45 to fluff the crowd. The primary carrot was "TNA officials will be watching out for the loudest fans -- they'll get to go backstage!" Part way through the show, he says, " We've already taken a dozen fans backstage. Anybody else want to join them?" Stuff like that. I had the impression that TNA wanted to make sure they didn't have a dead crowd, & that was much more important than the subtlety of heel vs. face reactions.

Another thing that I noticed when I watched on TiVo -- they show the backstage stuff in the venue, & the crowd reacts to it. But on the broadcast, they completely shut off the background crowd responses. The other thing was that they had just minimal cast there. (That's got to be an issue of paying for airfares, but that's false economy.) Way too much talking, & not enough wrestling. I'm kinda thinking that "TNA Management" was concerned that things would go badly, & ended up way over-compensating for what turned out to be a very hot crowd.

After reading Flea's response to my bitching last week (he explained that the crowd is mostly tourists who are not necessarily TNA fans), I tried to watch this week with that in mind. Unfortunately we were not in the Impact Zone this week, but I'm guessing it may have been a similar situation.

I'm going to finally agree that the line between face and heel is not drawn concretely enough in TNA. Whether it's the performers or the creative staff, I don't know. I just know that, when you have the crowd chanting "Respect" at Booker in the ring, something wrong happened. If they're not going to have the performers heel it up, then maybe show something during commercial breaks to sway the crowd a bit? I remember seeing a WWE TV taping (forget which brand) in New Jersey, and a wrestler from the area (I forget who) was wrestling heel, and they knew no one was going to boo him. So in between commercials, they had a video come on and he says that, while he's from Jersey, it sickens him to think of the people in this arena representing his home state. And so when the cameras are rolling and the guy comes out, he gets booed out of the building. If TNA are seeing that Booker's heel character isn't getting the right reaction, they could easily try tactics like that in between the segments.

I mean maybe they like the ambiguity, but it makes for strange TV.

I got a great idea. How about you take the three guys in the nWo, and get them over by themselves as uber-heels. Wouldn't that be great instead of plugging the nWo with chaff like Big Slow?
