Clemson says bye-bye after a 3-3 start

Even as an ACC fan, this one caught me off guard. Yes they were ranked in the Top 10 in the preseason, so they haven't exactly played up to expectations. But honestly, WHOSE expectations? No way on earth was Clemson a legit top 10 team.

For a couple of years it looked like Tommy's job was always on the line, so maybe he just ran out of lives. At least he isn't going to run out of money: Mark Schlabach says his buyout was around $4 million.

I was expecting them to wait until the end of the year, but honestly this gets them a head start on talking to other coaches.

If I were them, Spurrier and Muschamp would be top of the list. Spurrier knows the area obviously, would get to move out of the tougher SEC and to a bigger better program. And of course everyone will want Muschamp.

Further word from ESPN's Joe Schad (by way of "sources close to" Bowden) says that Tommy Bowden knew at the BEGINNING of the year that if Clemson were to ever be mathematically eliminated from the ACC title race, Bowden would no longer be retained as Clemson's coach, although he would be allowed to finish out the year. So this morning when Clemson's AD went to Bowden's office, Bowden told him he'd rather just cut ties right now.

The worst part of it as a Petrino hater is that it was a loss to his Arkansas team that was the final nail in his old boss' coffin. Some of you might or might not recall that one of the biggest chinks in Petrino's iron clad deal with Louisville was him having a secret meeting over the river in Southern Indiana with (I believe) the then Auburn Athletic Director about taking over for a not yet fired Bowden. Petrino had been Bowden's Offensive Coordinator for a season or two prior to him getting the Louisville job where he took great delight in running up the score on "my" poor beleagured 'Cats.

What?

Bowden was coach of Clemson, not Auburn. Unless you mean way back when Terry Bowden was coaching Auburn.

I'm confused.

You should talk to a Clemson fan. Wanna talk about delusional! Oh well, I hope they get used to their 7 win seasons because they're CLEMSON and they haven't figured it out yet.

You're right. My bad. Got carried away with the Petrino hate. Nothing to see here.

I think Clemson is a school someone can win big at(again). The right staff could do well there. But these days it's as much about assistant coaches as head coaches, and Tommy's teams were never the same after Rich Rod left.

The first half of the Alabama game torpedoed Clemson. Never recovered from it. Thought in the preseason they had a schedule conducive to a run, but that was thinking Alabama was going to be better than mediocre rather than a national title contender. I'll throw an odd ball choice out for Clemson: Kyle Whittingham of Utah. Going to Utah worked for Florida, and they could be a BCS team this year.
Considering the alumni have never seen to care for Tuberville even when they have been dominant, losing to a putrid Arkansas team must get him close to the hot seat. If Alabama is unbeaten and blows out Auburn in the Iron Bowl, he might be in trouble.

Yeah but 10 win seasons are increasingly uncommon and Clemson fans seem to think it's a birthright there.

I said at the beginning of the season that Clemson was overrated (it's in that preseason topic) so I saw this coming.

I think most ACC fans knew Clemson was over rated when anyone talked about them being a title contender. I did think they could win the ACC though, so they've been worse than I thought.

The name I read yesterday that made sense was the Vandy head coach. Apparently he has past ties to Clemson.

I'm assuming teams with identical records are listed alphabetically here. Otherwise, having Detroit ahead of Green Bay is just plain wrong, considering the Pack whupped 'em 31-6 on Sunday. Which means more fattening grub for me!
