Anyone else catch this? I'd almost forgot about it, and set the DVR at probably 7:45 Thursday night.
VERY glad that I did. It has a cool vibe to it, and it was a fun show. Seeing 1970's NYC, complete with the WTC, was cool, and the soundtrack full of 70's hits was pretty sweet. Harvey Keitel, Jason O'Mara, Gretchen Mol, Michael Imperioli...and oh yes, some Lisa Bonet.
I'm psyched to see how the second follows up, and would recommend this one.
I just can't bring myself to watch it, because "Life On Mars?" is my all time favorite song and I have all sorts of emotion wrapped up in that phrase that the premise does NOT seem to evoke.
I liked it okay, although I think Keitel is a little too old to be playing a tough guy. I think Colm Meaney, who played the role in the first version of the pilot, would've been better -- although I admit I haven't seen that version.
"The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?"
I'm pretty sure that while I watched this, Kim was going to have a brainyeurism. I'm not sure it's going to get a lot of repeat business if it stays that gimmicky and contrived.
Hey, it's another UK remake! Have ANY of them lasted besides "The Office?"

Do you mean scripted programming? Otherwise, most of the reality shows were originally British shows, like Big Brother and Pop Idol.
As much as the production values were high and the music quite good, my wife and I were lost pretty much at the WTC shot (although I hung on to see what Keitel might add). It had some moments, but in general I found the dialogue terrible and the whole thing heavy-handed and overwrought.

How unusual! I was just reading about Three's Company, and evidently it was a remake of some British sit-com.
So was "Sanford and Son," but I was talking about the past few years. I think there's been something like a half dozen series adapted from British series around the time of "The Office" or since, and they've all failed. Unfortunately, I don't really remember what any of them were - I can only remember "Coupling" and "The IT Crowd." Or maybe that's it and I'm totally exaggerating. (And no, I wasn't thinking reality or game shows when I said it, either so maybe I'm just totally wrong THERE, too.)
I'm siding with the 'meh' crowd. The acting wasn't great (even Keitel seemed to phone it in during the pilot), the dialogue was pretty blah and....I dunno, it just seemed to be pretty lightweight, rather than an episode of a guy who was actually caught in this situation. I'll give it a few more episodes to see if things flesh out, but overall it's not on the must-see list.
How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person Im portraying. Youre confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard, and I said You are aware that I am not really a wizard? and Peter Jackson said I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show. So I said Okay and then I said to myself Mmm.. How do I do that? And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras
Viva Laughlin is another recent British remake that failed. Life is Wild too. Also there is currently Eleventh Hour and Worst Week. I haven't watched either so don't know if they are any good. Is Queer as Folk considered successful? It lasted five seasons.
I remember there were also several British remakes in the second half of the 90's that failed.

Yeah, I didn't think you meant "classic shows" or I would have mentioned all in the family.
there was also a fawlty towers remake recently with john laroquette.

There was an earlier one with Bea Arthur!
And don't forget The Weakest Link.
Trading Spaces is one too.

Hey, let's not forget the smash success of the American remake of Red Dwarf! You know, the one that replaced Cat with Jadzia Dax and made Lister into Han Solo. That thing's been running for how many seasons now?

(answer: zero)
I've seen the pilot (both of them, I think. I have a nagging memory of there being two failed pilots. One show and one clipfest.) and it's a good thing it didn't get the green light. Bierko was pretty much wooden in that clipfest. Because of the pass on the show, Farrell moved on to DS9 and Leeves moved on to Fraiser.
I just watched this last night, and I thought it was pretty good. Enough to make me keep watching for a few weeks at least.
Harvey Keitel did a perfect variation on what I imagined Good old Andy Sipowicz would have been like a couple decades before NYPD BLUE started. Lisa Bonet looked pretty hot, as did Gretchen Moll.
The lead guy was kinda bland though.
...oh yes, Michael Imperioli's mustache was fucking AWESOME!

After doing some analysis, here's where each network's line seems to be: ABC: Unless you're a news magazine, Saturday Nigh Football, or a reality show, you need about an 8.5 rating (2.7 18-34) to stay on.
