What are the ground rules when your team is a complete joke? Can you switch allegiances for the balance of the year and come back the next year? Or do you have to wear the paper bad over your head and live through the hard times? Cause the Chiefs are the type of abysmal that just makes a fan want to give up. I missed out on the really bad years of the late 70s and 80s because of my age, but we might be headed there. It's going to be a real fight to the finish for the #1 pick with the Rams, that's for sure.

Who would be crazy enough to go coach the Raiders if Kiffin does indeed get the axe?

The D in Denver isn't impressive, but damn that Cutler has matured into a great QB! Who would have thought that he'd be the best of the Young, Leinart, Cutler debate? I'll never believe Merril Hoge(or was it another ESPN expert who was down on Cutler?) on QBs again.

Wow, the Browns are a complete bust.

I hate the Cowboys. It will be hard to pick against them.

Can the NFC West be stripped of its playoff spot?

Why do I get the feeling that the Packers will still win the division and the bye, and get slaughtered by whatever NFC East team they face in the divisionals? The NFC East is SO good, and I think we're going to get fooled a lot whenever one of them looks bad against a divisional opponent (like when Washington was poor against the Giants). It's going to be ridiculous if Washington has a 9-7 record and misses the playoffs, and Arizona or Seattle is 6-10 or 7-9 and wins the division.

You still have Mizzou to root for. Also, I'm not so sure that the Chiefs are even the worst NFL team in the state.

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

Sorry - being a fan means you support your team through thick and thin. They suck? You gotta suck it up and cheer them on (or root for the right parts to be fired).

Be a Lions fan. You'll be begging to the gods to be a Chiefs fan then.

Anyways, Sec19 is correct only he forgot the Lions corollary. We are allowed to switch rooting allegiance but not fan allegiance until Ford Senior finally kicks the bucket and things can finally change. Let me explain, my team now is the Steelers. I root for them, watch their games, etc but I do not wear their gear or substitute "we"s and "I"s like a normal fan. It's the only way to remain sane as a Lions fan.

See because with the Lions it goes way beyond a wholly talentless team, a clueless head coach, and a joke of a general manager. It is the inept, uncaring, unspeaking, immovable owner. Matt Millen has his job not because of his football acumen (he'd have been fired long ago if that was the case) but because he makes Ford Senior laugh when they have dinner together. Rod Marinelli doesn't have his job because of his coaching skills (he'd be fired today if that was the case) but because he causes Ford Senior's eyes to gloss over once Rod starts talking about pad level and effort. And no change will happen because Ford Senior doesn't give two flying f's what goes on so long as his hefty NFL owner's profit comes pouring in. He has no pride, he is not grounded in reality. He was handed the Lions franchise as one would give a rattle to a baby, or a chew toy to a dog. His only equal in uncaring, unfeeling, non-thinking ownership was the Chicago Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz, although Al Davis' fall into senility is making a run for it too. Look up Russ Thomas, Chuck Schmidt. That's how Ford Senior handles these situations. And it will never change, not until his death. They fell ass-backward into the greatest running back to ever play the game, and only managed to win ONE playoff game with him. That one playoff win also being the only playoff win since before the NFL-AFL merger, since the days of NFL championships in the 50s under Bobby Layne. It's beyond being a joke, it's beyond being pathetic at this point. The situation forced the greatest running back of all-time into apathy and early retirement. Forces local companies to purchase thousands of tickets in order to prevent a local TV blackout of home games.

The Miami Dolphins are further along in rebuilding in 8 months than the Lions are in SEVEN YEARS. Expansion teams have totally eclipsed the Lions. You are LUCKY to be a Chiefs fan. Because that means you're not a Lions fan.

Thank you, Miami, for making my Hurricane recovery that much sweeter. And before everyone starts piling on stating that Brady wasn't playing, please remember the last team to beat the Patriots in the regular season, with Brady, was Miami. And Brady doesn't play defense.

If you want to switch allegiances and never root for the Chiefs again, you can do that. But if you want to reserve the right to root for the Chiefs again, then you can't do that. A gray area is if you're rooting for the team to lose to get a better draft pick, but (1) it's too early for that and (2) the #1 overall pick is very expensive in the NFL, and can kill your team if they pick wrong.

Also, I think you're allowed to have a team as your 2nd favorite, the team that you favor to win when your first choice isn't involved. It's better if it's a team from the opposite conference, and you have to support your 1st team if they play that other team.

Why would you be down on the Chiefs? They have Herm Edwards and we all know that Herm Plays To Win The Game. The Chiefs had one of the most explosive offenses in football and they trade a pick to get a coach who thinks the forward pass is just a passing phase.
Hope for the Lions fans is that Ford's kid has gone public saying he'd fire Millen if he had the power. Stat of the day: Lions are 8-50 in their last 58 road games. They've really imploded since they started 6-2 last season and Kitna started shooting off his mouth. When bringing up worst ownership in football, don't downplay the abysmal job the Bengals and Cardinals have done through the years.
Do the Browns start regretting not dealing Anderson off the hot year last year and instead having him and Quinn with big contracts and being on the verge of being eliminated from the playoffs if they lose to the Bengals?

Hi. Jets fan here. It's been longer since my team won a Super Bowl. I still root for the Jets, though, if only for the season that comes when the Jets stick the ball in shit and shove it down every other team's throat. (...on a week to week basis, mind you.) I still have bitter, BITTER (as in cold) memories of buying a plane ticket all the way up to Buffalo in '99 to watch my team win the AFC East title only to drop the AFC Championship game to Denver. Never forget, never forgive, the day will come when your hard years spent as a fan will pay off. Only, fate willing, that day will come later for the Chiefs then the Jets.

But your picture shows the Michigan football team, which has been very successful, with the exception of the past two years. Us Jets fans have had NOTHING. No, the Giants winning the Super Bowl against the Patriots does NOT count; we hate the Dolphins!

Well, granted, the fishes in Miami doing worse has been alright, but how hard has that been?

I believe at least a handful of people were saying before the draft that Cutler was the best quarterback, or at least the best pro quarterback prospect, in that trio. Personally I thought it was going to be Young then Cutler, and Leinart waaaaaaay in the back, not doing anything special.

Also, my dear Chiefs fan, let me bestow upon you my condolences. However, as a lifelong Atlanta Falcons AND Atlanta Hawks fan, I can't say I have a TON of sympathy for your plight. Just know that your day will come. It may be a decade or more in the future, but you'll see.

Hey, ME! Although to be fair that was mostly based on thinking:

1. Vince Young runs slightly worse than Mike Vick (hardly damning criticism) and passes about as well (but that is).

2. Leinart was a good shout to get distracted by things not called football.

And I was sorta right, although I still fancy Leinart's chances of making it.

Quite. I thought he'd be every inch the bust, especially when they decided to throw him straight in there in week 1.

Of course I also thought Michael Turner would get found out, but instead he's mocking my fantasy team by denying Norwood any carries while he racks up mucho yards.

I understand exactly where you are coming from here. This is pretty much what it has been like to be a Royals fan the last 15 years. Ownership completely unwilling to put money into the team, all while crying poverty and inequity(which there was, but that excuse only goes so far). I know it's been bad being a Lions fan but there is a litany of bad things happen to Royals fans. Who can forget Chip Ambres dropping a fly ball that could have ended a 12 game losing streak only to then lose 19 straight? Kerry Robinson climbing the wall to get a fly ball....that dropped on the warning track? A pitcher getting hit in the face on a throw home? Multiple 100 loss seasons? Pop-ups continually dropping between fielders? Horrible drafting and player development. And MANY more. There are signs of life, but it will take a while. At least I've had the Cards to balance that out.

Anyway, it's not that I mind my team going young and rebuilding through the draft. It's a coach that PLAYS TO WIN THE GAME! Then leaves an unprepared QB out there to die. This was after he said on the pregame that if Thigpen struggles he'd put in Huard. Huard isn't great, but he gives them a chance. I wonder what Herm's idea of struggle is? Here are the results of the Chiefs first six drives against Atlanta.

1. 3 and out
2. 3 and out
3. 3 and out
4. 3 and out
5. 3 and out
6. pick

And there were multiple passes that could have been picked but weren't. It's not preseason, we can't just throw a guy out there to get a look at him!

I know Matt Millen is bad. Worst in pro sports. Carl Peterson has been around 19 YEARS and last won a playoff game in 1993! But he can make a profit! At least until the fans start no-showing.

Anyway, I'll always root for them, just want someone to root for to make the season interesting.

Jets fans - I grew up a Jets fan and from my personal experience, aren't Jets fans usually Mets fans? They ar a pretty successful baseball team.

Cutler/Young/Leinart - Cutler was definitely slated to be the best of the 3 by LOTS of websites and "experts" back then. I don't think anyone expected anything out of Young, but to say he's been a bust would be wrong. He may not have the stats, but he has made the team infinitely better since he arrived. Who can forget that six game win streak at the end of his rookie year?

I always thought it was a huge mistake to begin with, and now it's being verified. One good season and then bust.. well that never happens! Should have given him a one year deal and see how it worked out.

You're giving Young too much credit, and that streak would've been snapped if Kiwanuka didn't outright refuse to sack Young.
