Not really a complaint. The rule was enforced the way it should have been. It just sucks to be the Chargers today!

Going for two to win the game and avoid OT? Talk about ballsy.

Now, I just saw the highlights, so I'm trying to get the sequence right in my head:

- Cutler drops the ball, play is blown dead, correct?

If so, then why even review in the first place?

In any event, yes, going for 2, at home no less, is probably going to wind up being the call of the season. Blow it, and you're going to get hammered. Succeed, and everyone is complimenting your balls of steel.

Cutler drops the ball prior to moving his hand forward (thus, it's a fumble). Cutler and a Charger run to grab the ball. The instant before the Charger recovered, Hochuli blew it dead as an incomplete. Hochuli even admitted that it was the wrong call. Presumably Hochuli looked to see if he blew the whistle before or after the recovery (which would dictate possession). The end result was that it stayed Broncos ball, and the ball was spotted at the location of the ball as of the whistle. It's very unlikely that the whistle aided the Charger's recovery, so the Chargers definitely got hosed.

All of this, however, pales in comparison to Shanahan's huge swinging balls. What a great game.

San Diego got screwed, but they still could have stopped the Broncos on 4th and goal. Shanahan deserves credit for rolling the dice. Thought the Chargers could have had one more pass with 6 seconds left to get 10-12 yards to have a shot at a 63-65 yard winning field goal at the elevation prior to attempting the Hail Mary.

Now that Billick is out of the game Shanahan is my most hated coach currently coaching, but he knew when to ride a hot streak.

I'd be pissed if I were a Chargers fan though. That hurt doesn't go away for years.

I believe the review moved the spot of the ball back from the 2 (the LOS) to the 10. So he looks at it on film and see's that it's a fumble. Since he blew the play dead, rules state that the ball is down where it landed.

I thought there was no review because the instant replay booth wasn't working, which is why they couldn't review Champ's INT. Watching at home, it looked like simultaneous possession which isn't reviewable anyway, so it would be a moot point even if they could review it.

But yeah. The ball is fumbled to the 10 and the whistle blew which made for an 8 yard loss on the play.

If there was ever a game that showed Shanahan's total job security in Denver, this was it. No way does any other coach not named Belichick try this.

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

Maybe Hochuli could work a little more on his umpiring skills and less on building up his arms? Seriously though, he is one of the best in the biz, but everyone makes mistakes. Just sucks to be the Chargers on this one.

My thoughts: If the reply equipment fails to work in a reply situation, the call must go against the home team. This assumes that it is the home team's equipment and not something that the league brings in each week with the officiating crew.
