Well, at least the Big East took the clear lead for worst conference. Good job Maryland and UNC.

It was funny that two minutes before Reesing through that last pick, the announcers were telling us that his size had never been a problem. It was clear there that he just couldn't see over the lineman to notice the safety. Shame, but more because people will give USF more credit than they deserve, just like last year. Even the KU diehards I know told me KU would not be very good this year. I think they were underestimating what they had a little, but just a little.

3-2??? Wow. That's....I'm glad I didn't watch that.

I might have been wrong about Michigan making a bowl game.

Anyone else notice Middle Tennessee played Kentucky close? Going back to last season it would seem to me that they have a decent team over there.

Speaking of Tennessee, UCLA did beat them right? That sure does a lot to help BYU make a case right now.

Arizona State goes down and no one is talking about it. I...understand.

And of course Ohio State did what we've come to expect from them. Which is a shame because I'd rather it be a good game. At this point if everyone else had two losses and Ohio State had just this one, I still think they would get passed up for the BCS title game.

I can't wait for FSU/Wake next week to see if my team is really as much better as I think they are from last year.

Boy, it was an ugly win for Wisconsin over Fresno State, but I'll take it. Especially as amped up as Pat Hill was getting his players and fans over the past week. Thank God they have a bye next week....they'll need it to get ready for Michigan (even though they're not having a great season).

The interception off the batted ball in the first half was CRUSHING. We got lucky in the second half on the fumble challenge reversal. Helluva game though. It's too bad I couldn't make it there tonight. Would've been fun.

I was at that Maryland/Cal game, and I think we were all stunned that the same team that struggled to generate offense against Delaware & Middle Tennessee suddenly hangs 35 on Cal. The running game's been consistent all year (thanks to Da'Rel Scott), but it was nice to see Turner completing passes to the guys in red & white this week. If Friedgen can get this offense to show up for the rest of the year - and yeah, I realize it's a big "if" -- my Terps might actually be in the conversation for the ACC title when November gets here.

I take it more in the Pac-10 team, not named USC, going to the East Coast and falling flat on their face theory.
If Auburn had anything resembling an offense their game against LSU next weekend could be incredible.
Outside of Nebraska, has any program fallen further in the past 10 years than Syracuse? They were a perennial Top 12 team, now they might be the worst team in the country.
If there is such a thing as a methodical massacre, that would be USC/Ohio State. It would be real interesting to see what would happen if the USC defense actually shows up in every game this year, because they now have the track record of mailing in 2 or 3 games a year.
Besides the offensive philosophy shift, the biggest problem for Michigan is that freshmen don't win on the road.
Nice to see that having some speed at receiver can be taken advantage of by Notre Dame by keeping the QB upright and not being in 2nd and 18 on every series.
Is Ty Willingham still employed?
Think Greg Schiano is rethinking turning down jobs to stay at the State University of New Jersey?

As much as last weeks disaster, at home against Akron hurt, 55-13, against Penn St., in the resumption of the rivalry, with a whole load of alumni in town for a premiere of an movie about Ernie Davis, totally sealed Greg Robinson's fate. He'll be fired at the end of the season, and if they go out and lay another egg at home next week against Northeastern, he deserves to be turfed right then and there.

Now, that said, any coach who fancies himself a program rebuilder has to be looking at this job with more than a little interest. As long as the Big East stays a BCS conference, it's very, very easy to turn it around, given how weak the conference is. This could be the most high-profile job to be filled this off-season.

A few years ago, that second sentence would have been "Gee, could Kentucky sink any farther?" That's a testament to how far Rich Brooks has come with this team (which is also something you wouldn't have heard a few years ago).

That reversal was some SERIOUS home cooking. All three announcers were saying that they couldn't understand what was taking so long in the review. After, they were all dumbfounded that it was reversed.

Good game. I'm just glad we held on for the win.

As many horrible calls that have gone against us playing schools from the PAC-10 (usually up in Oregon), I'll take it, I just wish that it would have made more of a difference in the outcome of the game.

That game was an unspeakable atrocity. I one time went to a Georgia Tech home game where we beat Maryland 7-3. That was boring. THIS game-- it's a stretch to call it football.

I started paying attention in the second half, so I missed Auburn's 3 missed field goals and Mississippi State's 1. At one point late in the 4th quarter, I shit you not, the following sequence happened in the course of about 60 seconds of game time: 4 and out by MSU, fumble by Auburn, 4 and out by MSU, fumble by Auburn, interception thrown by MSU. MSU's safety wasn't even a "real" safety, it was the result of holding in the endzone.

Some people are applauding the teams' defenses but I find it impossible to look beyond the most inept joint offensive performance in over 40 years. Hell, MSU went 0-for-14 on 3rd down! Ugh. Worst game ever?

I had to go look at the box score to make sure this was correct. This is the most amazing stat I've seen all season. The two teams combined to go three for 30.

I didn't realize it until I read an article referencing it, but beyond USC, the Pac 10 sure did have a miserable weekend.

TCU beat Stanford
UNLV beat Arizona State
New Mexico beat Arizona
BYU beat UCLA
Maryland beat Cal
Oklahoma beat Washington
Baylor beat Washington State

Four Mountain West teams on that list! Oregon did beat Purdue, but wow. That's....saying to me that USC is more likely than I thought to go undefeated. They always get big heads out there and stink it up for a game or two, but in looking at the competition they'd have to totally fall apart to slip up.

Well, as an ASU alum, I don't really want to talk about it. I am still trying to figure out how they marched up and down the field and still blew the game. If I hear they were looking ahead to Georgia one more time as excuse, I believe I will have to scream...

Last week I think someone had mentioned about how some conferences with automatic BCS bids and it was a shame lesser conference teams would get passed by because of it. I don't really agree with that, but today Mandel at SI had this info that I hadn't read before. Apparently, a BCS conference can indeed be replaced by a lesser conference...

"It seems with the BCS, you learn something new every year -- and it just so happens that this past weekend in L.A., I found out about a complex, secret formula the BCS uses to determine this very thing. The most recent evaluation was based on a four-year period (2004-07) and consisted of the following three components:

• Average BCS ranking of each conference's highest ranked team.

• Average BCS ranking of each team in the conference.

• Number of teams from each conference in the BCS top 25.

I'm not privy to the actual data, but if the Mountain West or any other league had finished ahead of the Big East (the most obvious suspect for demotion), it would have gained an automatic berth for this season and next (the last two of the current cycle). Obviously, that didn't happen, and based on the data we do have, you can see why. Over the past four years, the Big East champion's average ranking was 11.75, while the Mountain West's was 14.25. The Big East placed 10 teams in the Top 25, the Mountain West four.

That doesn't mean this couldn't change in the future. The way things are shaping up this season, it's conceivable the Mountain West could finish with two or three Top 25 teams to the Big East's one, and it's possible a BYU or Utah will finish higher than any Big East team. But again, the league would need to demonstrate this over a longer period of time. According to the BCS' media guide, "It is anticipated that before the spring of 2009, the conferences will devise standards for automatic conference qualifications for after the 2010 regular season." I take this to mean they will run another four-year evaluation at some point and, if anything changes, it will go into effect when the new contract begins in two years."

During the UW Fresno State game (I think this is where I saw it, someone please correct me if it was elsewhere), a non-BCS school can take the place of a BCS school if the non-BCS school finishes in the top 16 and is higher than an automatic-qualifying BCS school.

So if BYU finished at #10, and the Big East winner finished at #11 or lower, BYU would get the berth.

ETA - On another subject, the WAC admitted the fumble that was overturned into an incomplete pass shouldn't have been overturned. If I find an impartial/better link, I'll add it.

Two things:

This rule, or some variant of it, has been in place as long as the BCS has existed. Depite it being dubbed "the Big East rule" after the conference reshuffle, the ACC is the only conference to have ever been in danger of losing its bid. It would have been eligible to lose its bid after the 2006 season, except the BCS overlords decided to reset the rankings following the 2004 ACC/Big East realignment.

Also, why is the Big East "the most obvious suspect for demotion" considering its highest ranked team is ranked higher than the ACC's highest ranked team, and the rule is based entirely on where the highest ranked team is? I mean, it's great that pollsters decided FSU's two FCS wins mean the Seminoles deserve to be ranked for the first time in I don't know how long, but it's not really relevant.

Over the past three seasons, the Big East champ has beaten the SEC, ACC and Big XII champs in BCS games. Over that time, the ACC has won zero BCS games and the Big XII and Big 10 both have losing records in BCS games. People like to knock the Big East - and this season, the conference certainly looks like shit - but the conference has more than earned its position. Certainly more than the ACC has.

During the UW Fresno State game (I think this is where I saw it, someone please correct me if it was elsewhere), a non-BCS school can take the place of a BCS school if the non-BCS school finishes in the top 16 and is higher than an automatic-qualifying BCS school.

Under no circumstance can a team that wins a BCS conference not go to a BCS game. It's called "automatic" because it's automatic. The rule you heard was probably the one saying a non-BCS school gets an automatic birth if it is ranked in the top 16 in the final BCS pool and there are three or fewer BCS at-large candidates ranked ahead.

For example, say ECU finishes ranked No 16. The top 15 has five SEC teams, five Big XII teams, two PAC-10 teams, one Big East team and one ACC team. Because no conference can have more than two BCS teams, there can, at most, be three at-large teams taken from this pool, meaning ECU has an automatic spot. If ECU finished, say, No 13, then only the top 12 would matter. And so on.

As far as I can tell, there hasn't been an instance yet in which there were not four BCS conferences with at least two teams in the top 16, so ECU, BYU or Utah would have to move up significantly to get an automatic spot.

The rule clearly isn't based only on the highest ranked team, in says in that quote how many teams in the top 25 as well as the average ranking of the teams are factored in over that time period, not just one year. And resetting the rankings after the 2004 realignment was the right thing to do. I mean should the Big East have continued to get credit for BC, Miami and VT if they no longer were in the conference? That wouldn't make sense.

The Big East would be based on the data he had and what they are doing this season so far. Clearly they are the worst BCS conference right now, and I think that's all he was saying.

As to FSU, let me just suggest you should watch them against Wake on ESPN2 Saturday night. This team....is much improved.

Yes, that part was added either last year or the year before. Missed that.

The Big East didn't need that continued credit, because Louisville West Virginia's success in 2005 and 2006 was enough. The Big East has never been in jeopardy of losing its bid, and won't be after this year. Only the ACC has ever been at risk. Shock of shocks, the ACC hasn't won a BCS bowl game this decade.

It's also week three. People say this every single year, and every single year the Big East champ magically wins its BCS game.

I would watch if I could; sadly, I get limited offerings in Cambodia. I was pissed off last week because ESPN didn't air the USF/Kansas game internationally despite being between two top-20 teams (I was especially pissed after it ended up being such an exciting game), but the network DID air Rutgers/UNC internationally. Lame.

That said, we'll see about FSU. Beating Coastal Carolina isn't really enough to inspire my confidence. They play a real team now, so we'll see how they do and go from there.
