I still think that the press is going to catch win of this Alaskan Independence Party group that she seems to be heavily involved in and slam her with it. I don't believe you should run for a Presidential spot while trying to help your state leave the union.

When this was investigated, Sarah Palin's only connection to the Alaskan Independence Party was through her husband, Todd. According to wikipedia, he was a member of the AIP from 1995-2002, which includes a significant portion of the time that she has run for office as a Republican. Prior to running as a Republican, she had only run for non-partisan office (city council, mayor), so she didn't really declare a party affiliation.

Peter made the point earlier in this thread, but just imagine if Michelle Obama had been the member of a party that wanted to secede from the USA. That probably would've been the death knell for the Obama campaign --- hell, look how much flak was raised just from her comment about being proud of her country. So yeah, this AIP thing is worth a closer look.

Also, I can't take credit for this, it was on another message board, but....

"Sarah Palin's takes her views on Iraq from her daughter: nobody is pulling out anytime soon."

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

I also thought she gave a speech to them but who cares. This is such non-news, really.

Both sides need to quite being so paranoid and discuss issues. The press needs to keep the pols on issues.

And yes, I know it wont happen.

I heard this same joke on a recent 'Real Time with Bill Maher' show.

This Alaska Independence Party thing is interesting. I don't watch or read the news much nowadays, but it seems like something I'd have heard about somehow by now (this board excluded).

The link to the address is here. (youtube) and he says this at about the six-minute mark.

So the vice chair of the party says she was a member. Hmm.

If this were Michelle Obama being linked to a secessionist party she'd have been burned at the stake by now.

Of course, it's been almost a week since that same Dexter Clark backed off and said she WASN'T a member.

I'm sensing from recent posts that this angle hasn't received as widespread attention. ;-)

The thing with the Alaskan Party is that they decided to infiltrate the Republican and Democrat parties, because they knew they would never get into major positions as themselves. If you can find their meetings on U-Tube, they go into detail about how Palin is the one they wanted to get elected and how they intend to infiltrate the parties. If she wasn't a member then why did last year, so give their opening speech?

People slam the Democrats for not being patriotic, yet how can anyone vote in a VP that wants to have a vote to get her state out of the union? As for Wikipedia, there is a reason that no sane educational institution will take that as a reference in a paper.

Black helicopters anybody?

Joe Lieberman spoke last week at the Rep Convention and he isn't one (well at least not officially). The entire population of Alaska could infiltrate and so what.

And having a vote I believe is a democratic thing to do. I do agree about Wikipedia.

Look, I don't care for her and how what was good for Hillary isn't for her schtick the Reps are playing but how about something with substance.

From Scott Adams' blog...
----------
Context Is Everything
http://dilbert.com/blog/entry/context_is_everything/

Recently I was gigantic. Or so it seemed because I was attending a school open house and sitting in a tiny chair designed either for a small child or an elf with one buttock. Context is everything.

I was thinking about context as I observed with fascination McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate. The immediate response from my lefty friends was that McCain was insane to pick a running mate with such a thin resume. That's one possibility. The other explanation is more interesting.

My first response to McCain's decision was to assume that Republicans did not suddenly forget how to win elections. If selecting Palin was a brilliant strategy in disguise, how exactly was it supposed to work?

Context.

McCain had a context problem. He was an old (too old) white guy from the failed establishment running against a younger and more exotic agent of change. It was a losing context. His choice of Palin changed the context.

Since selecting Palin, the discussion in the media and in kitchens across America has shifted from "Can you be too old to be President?" to "Can you be too young and inexperienced?" McCain has cleverly put his critics in the position of arguing that experience is a good thing. And McCain has more of it than Obama. If you believe that people only vote for presidents, not vice presidents, this was a clever move.

The Democrats' other big argument against McCain was that he's a phony maverick who won't really change anything. It's hard to make that case while at the same time criticizing him for making such a surprising pick for Vice President. You can argue with Palin's credentials, but you can no longer argue with McCain's willingness to buck conventional wisdom. That book is closed.

On the more obvious side of things, picking a young woman insulates McCain from being the charter member of the Old Boy's Club. It's politically correct to say voters are smart. But clearly there are millions of exceptions. Some voters prefer candidates who look like them, end of story. Palin will increase McCain's support from female votes and hardcore conservatives.

Palin also has the benefit of making McCain look more presidential by comparison. Call it the Dan Quayle effect. By way of contrast, Obama is in the position of having a running mate who is clearly more experienced than him, just as smart, and lacks only charisma. That exacerbates Obama's problem of looking like a celebrity and not a leader.

If Palin survives all the scandals and rumors, the argument against her comes down to experience. But how important is experience for a president? Quick, name a presidential mistake that was caused by inexperience as opposed to stupidity, laziness, bad luck, or any of a dozen other reasons. I'm no historian, but I can't think of any presidential mistakes attributed to inexperience.

Palin would have been the wrong choice for just about any other presidential candidate. But in the context of McCain's campaign against Obama, it might have been a brilliant campaign strategy. Is this another example of McCain being underestimated, or was it simply a brain misfire of an old man who ran out of time?

Frankly, I can't tell.

Only in reference to using wikipedia as a source: I also agree that wikipedia alone is useless unless is references a reliable source, but I was just to lazy to follow the link in the footnotes in the articles about her and her husband. Directly from those footnotes, here are the actual articles referenced:

I don't really know the AIP's agenda, so I can't speak to their patriotism or lack thereof. I also am not saying that Sarah Palin doesn't have baggage. I was just trying to point out why the press hadn't made a stink over her rumored affiliation.

He clearly isn't for everybody and I would never try to convince someone who 'despises' him to like him, but I enjoy his coverage/slant/angle whatever you want to call it. Then again I'm also starting to really enjoy Rachael Maddow, and I'm sure that will make a few peoples head spin.

This is a person who is stepping on the playing field to be Vice President of the United States, she's going to be a 72 year old's heartbeat away from the top seat in the country. I think we are entitled to know more about her than she shot a winning free throw and hunts for moose.

Cynically, because the campaign and its acolytes think that her being a woman entitles the campaign to a free pass on a whole lot of stuff. See their reaction to Obama using "putting lipstick on a pig" in reference to some of McCain's policies, her own pitbull/hockey mom crack notwithstanding.

Same here. The key is going to be how the Republicans handle her in the runup to November 4. It'll raise more than a few eyebrows if they punt her off to Alaska while more and more less-than-savory things from her past crawl out of the woodwork.

I watched the "Nightline" excerpt of her Charlie Gibson interview. I thought she came off fine and Gibson came off as a strange choice by the campaign of first person to interview her. But then, I'm a Brian Williams man, so I'm probably biased. I wasn't excited enough to put "Good Morning America" on the DVR just so I could see more of it/her.

I'm kinda tired of the whole business. The Constitution says ANY at least 35 year old natural born citizen who has lived in the USA for the past 14 or more years is qualified to be President, so as far as I'm concerned everything else is bullshit and excuses. This also means I fervently believe *I* am qualified to be president...also AWArulz, DrDirt...actually a ticket of those two would probably be pretty awesome, but I'd hate to see how they'd figure out who'd be at the top of the ticket. ;-)

EDIT: I also have "a heartbeat away" fatigue. Let's roll out a NEW cliche, please!

CRZ is right, she is certainly legally qualified to be president.

I just feel like if this was a company (and really being POTUS is being CEO of the biggest and most important company in the world, since even Exxon doesn't control the largest military in human history) and John McCain was being considered for the job of CEO that when asked about a succession plan he would put in place that his response is "Well, there's a girl in accounting who just got her degree from University of Phoenix. She should be just fine."

Citation acquired! Here ya go, courtesy the NRCC and the Power Line blog:

The speaker is identified as Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) (cohen.house.gov).

I have a few thoughts about this, but I think I'll lay out on this one.

I am not sure if he said this first: I heard susan sarandon saying that on Entertainment Tonight earlier this week. That really sounds like something she would come up with.

“Jesus Christ was a community organizer: Pontius Pilate was a governor. Thats all I have to say about that.” when asked by Entertainment tonight about the 2008 election.

But, there's extra good news on this front:

I love that one. Aside from the small problem that Christ wasn't a community organizer and Pilate wasn't a governor, it's great. At least when the Devil quotes scripture, he's accurate (if not always in context).
